Yesterday I was on top of the world. I took the ferry to Alpnachstad where I got on the steepest cogwheel railroad to the summit of Mount Pilatus. It was one of the most breathtaking experiences of my life. First, taking the boat around Lake Lucerne gave me the opportunity to see the landscape from constantly changing perspectives. Then the rail car was an incredible experience. The landscape changed right before our eyes as we ascended. There were daffodils towards the top¦ At times I felt like I was on a ride from Six Flags and that any minute we were going to plummet back down. When I reached the top, I couldn't believe my eyes. I was on the top of the world. I know that there are taller mountains, but I can't imagine them. ... read more

I have moved on from Zürich after a lovely stay. After my last entry I continued around Zürich to the sites I had not yet seen. I started at Fraumünster church, which was begun in the late 7th century and now contains five large stained glass windows by Chagall; they were absolutely stunning. Then I went to the top of one of the towers at Grossmünster church where I got the most beutiful panoramic view of the city. This was followed bz going to St. Peter-Kirsche, which was begun around 1100 and has the largest clock-face in all of Europe. That was all of the churches I could take at that point, so I took the ferry as a sort of boat tour around Lake Zürich for a couple of hours. Of course there was more ... read more

Thursday 29th May We were leaving Lucerne as early as possible, but much later than we had originally planed as Owen had a 10am appointment with the dentist to deal with his errant wire. The dentist neatly, and Owen informs me, painlessly, clipped a small piece of wire off, blunted the new end he created and cleaned the tooth of dental cement. Before arriving at the station we had purchased some filled rolls and drinks for the journey. The trip today to St Moritz was a little more complicated than our last train ride; we had to change trains twice, once at Thalwil and once at Chur. With no trouble with station masters blowing whistles urgently at Lucerne we were packed and on board with plenty of time to spare. At Thalwil we had 7 minutes ... read more

Today we took on the mountains of Switzerland! Actually first off we went and dropped the car at Mercedes so they could have a look over it. They said it was fine, so then we were on our way... First off we headed to Mt titlis which is one of the highest in the aquas alps. Found our way without getting lost and boarded the first cable car which was a closed in one that just had the two of us.. Mum did well with the heights, I naturally loved it! About half way up the mountain we switched to a masive cable car that held loads of people... We got crammed in, not so much fun, but pretty views... From there it was into the rotair! The rotair is a revolving cable car that turns ... read more

Wednesday 28th May A minor disaster this morning at breakfast. Owen has had quite extensive orthodontic work done during his teens. Although all the work has been completed, he still has a wire running across the back of his teeth, and needs to wear a retainer plate when sleeping a t night (just to make sure his fangs don't remember where they used to be and attempt to move back into residence). During breakfast the wire on his leftmost tooth broke free, leaving him with a pointy piece of metal uncomfortably scratching his tongue from time to time (especially when eating). Luckily the hotel had provided a list of useful phone numbers, along with the rest of the room information, and this included a dentist. He was unable to see Owen today, but could manage an ... read more

Tuesday 27th The package we purchased for Switzerland gives us hotel bookings for every night, a booked ticket on the Glacier Express and 5 days of first class train travel on the Swiss domestic train network. This does not resemble the Melbourne network, as none of the Swiss cities have an extensive sprawl of suburbs. The network has more in common with our country train network, the stations are usually a minimum of 20-30 minutes apart (however the rolling stock are of a much better standard, comfort wise than the Melbourne). This means we can leave a city whenever it suits us, providing we are at the correct hotel that evening. We decide on an early departure from Geneva; first test for the Stephens Removalist Company is to move the baggage convoy onto the train to ... read more

Well, it had to end some time, but we left Lauterbrunnen on Sunday. Feels like we were there for two weeks, not 2 and a half days. On our way to Lucerne, we stopped at a tourist spot, Ballenberg, which was basically a Swiss version of Sovereign Hill. The main diffeerence being it wasn't based around gold mining, but simply Swiss living and housing through the ages and areas of Switzerland. It was really excellent, with cheese making, pottery, black-smith's, manual farming, old thatch cottages etc. and Kerryn's favorite - a chocolatier's. Went on to Lucerne, were we checked out the Lion monument - twice. I saw this amazing sculpture last time I was here, and it is - for some reason - very moving, just to look at it. We spent a nice morning walking ... read more

We went on a walking tour today around the market district of Lake Como. We went to an old church, and walked on some wooden bridges that were built in the middle ages. Then went up to the top of Mt. Pilatus and had a snowball fight. After that we came back into the city and had free time for a couple of hours and bought some souvenirs and went to a cafe to get ice cream. It's not as cold as I thought it would be, the highs have been around 50 except for on top of the mountain where it was probably in the upper 30's. Tomorrow we are going on a cruise on Lake Como and then taking a bus to Milan.... read more
