JonKoping is about halfway between Kristianstad and Stockholm so makes a good place to stay on our trip north. It is perhaps best known in many countries as the birthplace of Agnetha from Abba, but we’re hoping it also has something interesting enough for a 2 night stay. Southern Sweden is home to most of the elk in the county and we find an “Alg” park not too far away. This park also has Red and Fallow deer but the standout sight are the Elks (or Moose). There are 4 male elks with huge antlers, 3 calves all born this year and 5 females. The elks have names and are tame enough to come close to the safari wagons for feeding. Eskjo is a nearby town with pretty old wooden houses, mainly painted red, which surprisingly ... read more

Ahus is a small town on the Baltic coast near our base for 3 days in Kristianstad Sweden. It also appears to be the home of Absolut Vodka. We resist the temptation to do a tour of the facility and instead have a look around the town, which is typically Swedish, quiet, very clean, pretty Church and a small well organised museum with helpful staff. 400 years ago, Ahus was the major town in this area but was destroyed in the Swedish-Danish wars and when control of this area swung back to Sweden, Kristianstad became the new regional centre. The coast south of Ahus is a series of sandy beaches and is famous for eel fishing. We find a shop selling smoked eel and buy a half eel which is the smallest portion they sell. We ... read more

Car wrecks en masse In 2013 Ake visited a car cemetery in Kronoberg County in southern Sweden. After he published a blog entry about that visit he learned that there is at least one other similar site in Sweden. This other one is near Årjäng in Värmland County. The idea of going there to see this car cemetery has been on our minds for a few years. In August 2022 we had a few days where we had nothing better to do so we decided to go on a little road trip with the ultimate goal of looking at rusty cars in Värmland. Some of you who read this might feel that car wrecks dumped in the nature is nothing but an eyesore. If you feel like that we would recommend you to stop reading because ... read more

A blog with the founder of the Nobel Prize, one Nobel laureate and a troll that has nothing to do with any of them In August 2022 we both managed to get a few days off from work. Since it was still summer and the weather forecast promised lovely weather we decided to go on a little road trip. We travelled through a district called Värmland Country. Our main goal for this road trip was a very small place called Båstnäs, so small that it doesn't even count as a village. We will write about Båstnäs and the site we wanted to see there in our next blog entry. Båstnäs is located only 2 km from the Norwegian border so to go there we pretty much had to travel all across Sweden. In this blog entry ... read more

It was time to head back home- we had a rental car to return and a 6 hour journey, south bound on highway E6 towards Malmö, Sweden. We took a little break and trekked up to explore a bit of the Swedish countryside to view the magnificent coast line! As highway E6 ran parallel to the coast we were never too far away from the water! Most of the countryside in Sweden and Norway had the classic red painted barns and vast expanses of agricultural land. Also along the highway were numerous windmills fulfilling the need for green Eco-sustainability We reached Malmö and had dinner at an Indian restaurant called Urban Turban, to overcome our spice withdrawal :) and then walked around the city to see Malmö’s pride — the Turning Torso, the tallest skyscraper in ... read more

It was a bright sunny day and a new destination was on the horizon. After breakfast we took the metro to the airport and rented a car for the remainder of the trip. Oslo was our destination and we had all the time in the world to get there before sunset, after all it was the land of the midnight sun! Driving wasn’t an issue as it was a left hand drive system and google maps our friend! Highway E20 from Copenhagen took us through the Oresund tunnel and bridge to the city of Malmö in Sweden. An engineering marvel would be an understatement for this brilliant genius of structural engineering that connected two countries together and facilitated trade and cooperation. Part of the bridge is an underwater tunnel which connects to a manmade island called ... read more

We were back on the road and our next stop was Gothenburg, the second largest city in Sweden. I was prepared for cooler temperatures as we were heading closer to the northern latitudes. and but the weather here took me by surprise! I learned later that day from the tour-boat operator that this was due to the moderating influence of the Gulf Stream. The drive on E6 through Sweden resembled driving through south central Pennsylvania, with similar vegetation greeting our eyes. Along the highway that hugged the west coastline of Sweden; were signs for McDonalds and Burger King and surprisingly, none for local eateries. We stopped at a McDonalds for lunch and what was interesting and different about this was the way they recycled/disposed their waste. Once used, every item had its own dispose slot and ... read more

All who wander are not lost Gallivanting time again Slovenia called and I’m going to see what it's all about. I went through a couple of years ago and it was absolutely pissing down so no stops. Took a new route to the continent, some catamaran ferry or other from the very southern tip of Sweden to Germany, to the island of Rugen, a lot cheaper than the normal combo of bridge and ferry and quicker. As usual I did not pay attention to my sat nav settings so I got to see more of northern Germany than I needed. But not to worry, I like Germany, a nice neat land with decent food and comparatively cheap hotels. I planned for Potsdam but ran out of steam earlier so I hit a little town and got ... read more

Spain, why not? My stepdaughter got rid of her boyfriend and is flying free doing things that he did not want to do, she went to Spain and I tagged along a little later, some time together and some time on my own and I’ll rent a motorbike and scoot along in Spain for ten days or so. I left home in the afternoon for a long wait at the aeropuerto in Gothenburg and a cheap flight later landed in Malaga at midnight. Of course everything was closed, but Fia had some snacks in the car and that kept me going until breakfast, lunch ended up being a soggy petrolstation sandwich. The Costa del Sol is best defined by the word ghetto, so many holiday homes wherever the eye roams, not my cup of tea at ... read more

When my sister and I were trying to see each other after two years, initially Sweden was closed to Americans and UAE residents. The week before our Greece trip, the restrictions suddenly changed, so I decided to keep our Greece plans and go to Sweden after for a week. My sisters and I took a quick trip to Stockholm back in 2004, when our other sister was studying in Finland. We had taken the ferry from Helsinki to Talinn Estonia for a few days stay, then an overnight ferry to Stockholm for a two night stay. Our ferry crossing then was memorable in that it was very rough seas. My sister I am seeing now has notoriously horrible motion sickness and she took dramamine pretty much immediately to pass out, but my other sister and I ... read more
