Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog that I will use mainly during my journey with the ship Gunilla between the 10th of November until the 31 of January, but hopefully it will be used for more exciting trips! I will start by explaining some of the basic things about the trip as well as the ship. As most of you know, Gunilla is a three masted bark that is 50 metres long (164 feet) and with masts of 34 metres (112 feet) (That we actually climb, all the way to the top!). The trip will take us to Cádiz (Spain), Safi (Morocco), Mindelo (Cap Verde), Salvation Islands (French Guyana), Paramaribo (Surinam), Georgetown (Grenada) and finally Cartagena in Colombia (see the map). This means that christmas will be celebrated on the Salvation Islands and new year in ... read more

Having endured yet another boring summer at the office I was finally gearing up for my first long escape from work, and the thought was very refreshing. This time I had scheduled a few weeks to catch up with old friends; and circumstances had allowed for me and Joanne to be able to visit Thailand at the same time. And not only that; I had learnt that my old friend Manuella from Timor Leste was on holiday in China at this time - a hasty arrangement and we decided to meet up in Hong Kong. It was looking to be a busy trip with lots of interesting reunions which made my cynical heart smile a little. I had prepared by bringing loads of fish, the only European staple to meet with a high enough approval rate ... read more

Today, was pretty lazy and didn't walk out till like 11! haa...headed to the tourist info centre to get some information about day trips....all the basic sightseeing places were all CLOSED FOR THE SEASON....WTH....._ So, I am left with these outlying Islands around Gothenburg. Got a day travel pass and headed up towards the Northern Archipelago, an Island called Ockero.. It was a LONG tram and bus ride....got there. and really...nothing much. a small town there...loads of kids riding their bikes around....a nice fishing port... I guess they have some nice paths you can walk into the Island but I didn't really bother walking there...Had my regular ice-cream walk around....then waited for the bus. Took the bus back to the city and then another tram towards the opposite direction to the Southern Archipelago. It was pretty ... read more

Anyways, the morning wasn't bad to begin as I had this very nice breakfast! (haa..I would never really arrange breakfast at home with bread and cereal at the same time...!) Slacked off a bit and then decided to walk out anyways. It was drizzling.........but I brought my umbrella so that was ok...^^" Walked around the city, the shopping streets, the parks.... It rained today, a lot, and for the first time I didn't get where I was planning to go... it all went wrong near a wee town with the hilarious name of Angered. Got off the ferry ok, and found the bike signs for my distination (the also hilariously named Trollhattan), no worries, for the first 15km at least, then the road parallel to the multilane motorway disappeared, and the signs seemed to indicate one is meant to bike along the shoulder of the open speed motorway, which is obviously pretty bloody dangerous but also illegal in every coutnry I've been to so far ( and accoridng to the Swedes I spoke to, illegal here too), so I spent the next two hours in the rain biking up bloody great hills and going down agian looking ... read more

Hej from Sweden! Today's entry will be brief as we are off to bed a bit earlier so we can head off on the ferry to Denmark early in the morning. We spent most of the day shopping and searching around for fun little things. We started off in Kungälv to look for my favorite kitchen towels that remind me of Sweden every time I dry my hands after doing the dishwashing...what a wonderful way to end such a chore! We then headed off to Gothenburg for the afternoon. We begam at the train and bus station to secure our reservations for our journey southbound on Sunday. It is such a beautiful building and used by so many people. Next was the ferry terminal to confirm our ferry trip tomorrow, but this also gave us a ... read more

Hej, fran Sweden! Today we took a ferry to the local town of Marstrand, which is a small sailing community on an island not far from where we are staying. There we toured through one of the two old forts that guarded the area over 400 years ago. We had great fun climbing up into the tower and searching through the secret tunnel system under the fort. We saw areas where the prisoners were kept, the blacksmiths "cell", the kitchen, the church and many cannons. Afterwards we walked around the town and Nolan had his first Swedish ice cream..."glass"...there will be a lot of that on this trip! We took the ferry back, then headed to the nearby town of Kungalv, where my grandparents lived. There we had "korv och potatis", hot dog and mashed potatoes, ... read more

We arrived safely yesterday afternoon, a bit weary, but very excited to be here! Nolan keeps saying over and over "I can't believe we're in Sweden!" We had a wonderful meal here last night...my aunt is famous for her meatballs. Nolan slept for 12 hours straight, and we awoke this morning to a beautiful blue sky and a wonderful Swedish morning. Today we are off for a few little excursions around the area where they live here outside of Gothenburg. We are closest to Marstrand which is a wonderful old community we will reach by ferry, and we hope to visit the old fort in Kungelv which was used to protect the Swedes from those terrible Norwegians back in the day. No photos yet....need a shower first!... read more
