Yes this is my last blog from Sweden. Tomorrow at yet another obscenely indecent hour (3am) I get up to rush off to the airport to catch my long awaited flight to Athens. I will never ever moan about having to get up at half 5am to catch the 7am flight out of Dunners........ Anyway, today Jeff and I went into town and walked around a part of the waterfront area. We then hopped on a ferry and zipped (and I mean zipped, shit those boats don't hang around) across to the other side of the river to take a nosy at how the rich Gothenburgians live. The area is reclaimed dock land and has been done up with very very swanky and ridiculously expensive (according to Jeff) apartments. We wandered along for a good hour ... read more

Tuesday 5 September The morning dawned clear, calm (for a change) and surprisingly warm, so it was decided that the conditions were ideal for taking a trip out to the Gothenburg archipelago. This archipelago is completely different from the Stockholm one, being very barren and rocky. This in itself makes it beautiful, especially when you see a red and white house standing proudly on its own like sentinel in uniform protecting some sacred space. There are some vague peculiarities about things in Sweden, one of them being the transport system and rules. We hopped on the tram where we live and went the entire way across town (it took an hour), then hopped on the ferry and were taken to the first island, all for the price of a single fare. That single fare is approximately ... read more

In a previous blog I mentioned how the state runs all the booze outlets and the opening times are very limited. In Vasteras when we went to buy wine it was very modern as you were actually allowed to shop as we do in NZ. IE, walk around, pick up bottles, read the back of the label and decide what you want to buy. In a suburb near to where Jeff lives in Gothenburg it is a different story. Here you walk into the shop (called Systembolaget) and you have to push a wee button to get a number........for a place in the queue. You then have to look at the booze through locked glass display cases. You can't pick up a bottle and read the back of the label etc. You have to decide what ... read more

I made it! Yip, I'm here in Gothenburgh after 49 hours of solid travelling. The plan I had to sleep on the very long Sydney-Dubai leg didn't really work.......thanks to a gorgeous guy from Bosnia-H sitting across from me.........ha ha ha.......... Sorry girls, no real jucy details, he was flying home to a city I can't remember the name of except that it might have been in Saudi Arabia. Anyway, the flight was good, I would recommend Emirates Airline. Dubai airport was lovely as I imagined it would be. Heathrow was still old and crummy and not very clean, something I hadn't imagined it would be after all this time. Flying into Gothenburgh I was amazed that it was forest everywhere all dotted with little lakes. It looked very pretty. At the airport Jeff said we ... read more

Like I mentioned in another blog, I had a really nice Chardonay on the flight and figured it was good because it was French. I had a French Sav Blanc on the flight to Goth and it was blah! Like a bad NZ riesling. Am looking foward to opening the one NZ bottle of Sav Blanc I managed to bring with me.........go Shingle Peak 2006!!!!... read more

This was THE weekend! 4 eager people was stading at the trainstation in Oslo waiting for the Gothenburg train to roll into the station. Before going to the trainstation I went to the fruit salesman outside and bought boxes with strawberries that we would enjoy on the train. My boyfriend had just bought a pizza that was our evening dinner, since we came straight from work to the train. The train arrived and we rushed to get 4 seats together, 2 of them facing the driving direction. We were lucky. We settled down and enjoyed our pizza. Later we tasted the best strawberries ever this summer! I wished I had bought 2 boxes more - they tasted so sweet. The train was full of people, almost all of them were going to Gothenburg. This weekend Robbie ... read more

Day 48: Friday 23rd. June 2006: Raining: We had a good train trip to Gotenburg through pretty countryside. We arrived to a Public holiday for Midsummer - everything was closed even MacDonald's though we did find one open so had a meal there. We had a walk around a park where families had gathered for picnicking. ... read more

It almost slipped our minds since they don't seem to celebrate mothers day here in Sweden! Happy Mother's Day to both of our wonderful, lovely mom's! We wish we could be there to help celebrate and give you loads of hugs and kisses, but you are both in our minds. All our love to the most important women in our lives! We miss you and will see you soon! Thanks for the update on the pups. I'm glad to hear they are enjoying their surrogate parents! Gothenburg was ok. It is quite small with very few sights to see (kind of like Ottawa, lol). There was a soccer game (or should I say football?) game yesterday so the locals were a bit riled up to say the least. One drunken asshole slammed into Mike while we ... read more

Hi Everyone, Lets take a moment of silence for the death of the Ottawa Senators in this years playoffs once again...... Damn you Hasek, Damn you to hell!!! On to happier news, we have arrived in Göteborg Sweden safe and sound last night after spending 10 hours on the train. We left Bergen early on Friday morning and headed to the village of Flåm Norway which was unbeliably beautiful. It is right at the mouth of the Sogenfjord with snow capped mountains all around. We took the Flåm railway down into the valley and it was quite a trip. We passed some amazing waterfalls and steep cliffs that were phenominal. We had a good laugh when a Chinese tourist and her daughter got off the train to take photos of a valley. We weren't supposed to ... read more
