Adam and I officially became 'Aunt Miranda and Uncle Ham' when Maria and Luke proudly announced the birth of their first son, little Liam, at the end of January this year. I was at work in Belfast when the call came through to me that the little one had at last arrived, and I spent a good while jumping up and down in the paediatric treatment room whooping with joy whilst co-workers looked on with a mixture of concern and curiosity. Half a world away no doubt the new Aunt Kyrie and Grandma and Grandpa Odell were doing a happy dance of their very own, not to mention all of Maria and Luke's family and friends near and far. Yet, in the months since this momentous day, all Adam and I have been able to do ... read more

Our first (would-be) 'White Christmas' was magic, albeit decidely devoid of the white fluffy stuff to which the title owes. We braved the craze of Dublin airport two days before Santas arrival, and managed to smile at the mayhem that reigned, despite the lengthy queues in every direction. It was a huge relief to touchdown at Skarvsta airport where we were happily greeted by a very heavily pregnant Maria and an excited, though nervous father-to-be, Luke. It was absolutely wonderful to see Maria 'glowing' and the soon-to-be new arrival was a huge talking point among all of the family throughout the festive season. Christmas was celebrated on 24th December at Maria's parents' home. After a delicious brakfast, we got oursleves all spiffed up...it suddenly iseemed Christmas had indeed arrived. And while we were a long way ... read more

You must all be updated seeing as everyday a million things happen that my cyber world following must be made aware of. First of all: I tried Vegemite. Foul. But good for you... Second of all: I have a "job". Ok so I've only worked one day. And I got paid the equivelent of 8 US dollars for 5 hours. I am an illegal immigrant practically...I worked in the kitchen at Kalmar making burgers, potatoes, salads, and fallafel. It was fun and I ate alot...I am going to try and work there more. Third of all: I have joined the choir...I think. I went to the first practice last week and there was a lot of Swedish talk swirling about and I felt like a lost little lamb. Plus I had no idea about the melodies ... read more

I'd like to say that I accidently bought Carrot Bread instead of Wheat Bread at the grocery store...awesome.. Last night was a "well good" night as they say in good old England. We went to Stockholm Nation which looks like it belongs in a scene of Sex in the City. A Dark bar doused in class and all its counterparts with tables glowing in a sensual red. Light enough to see and dark enough not to. Stockholm Nation has a reputation for being stuck up and I can see why because everyone there was dressed to the nines and I thought I was too until I got there and saw that I looked like I was going to a baseball game. But ah that is Sweden. Before we went to Stockholm we went to Upplands Nation ... read more

I have found that from the moment I enter a new country it takes approx. 4 days for me to find a succulent treat that is special to the country and then 5 seconds for me to become hooked and need an IV of the stuff hence forth. That little devil of a treat here in Sweden is a Kex bar which is a chocolate waffer bar, kinda like if a Kit Kat and pure awesomeness mated, and I have had one every day. This combined with our weekly Fikas, a swedish tradition of chatting over coffee and cookies, and our nightly boozing may just turn my body into a potato of gluttony. Thank god for biking. Without my body would not know what it is to do something healthy. We had such marvelous weather the ... read more

i woke up to the gray gray whale of a sky as i do most mornings here and i tried to convince myself to go on a run, but laziness won over reason. i'm now kicking myself for not going because the running trail by my building is wonderfully peaceful and beautiful. it looks like the setting of a romantic pioneer movie..haha that sounds like a horrible film. anyways hannah( yes i have a friend named hannah,i still am trying to accept that) and i went outside to read once we saw a glimmer of sunlight and we both got really immmersed into our books until thunder woke us out of our trance. the sky had become bleak without us noticing and the air colder. we each felt a raindrop at about the same time and ... read more

We ventured out recently to the oldest part of Uppsala, Gamla Uppsala. The old town was once the centre of Uppsala City before the township itself was moved in the 13th Century four kilometres away (to its current site). What remains in Gamla Uppsala is a range of historical sites, testament to the long history of this city. The most significant of the historical sites is a series of ancient burial mounds. The three major grave mounds are said to be the tombs of legendary pre-Viking kings, with archaeological digs retrieving ancient Viking artefacts from this location. It was amazing to be in a place with such a long recorded history-eerie to imagine where we were standing was once a place of ancient burial rituals! Nearby was a lovely church dating back from the 15th century. ... read more
