This week has been our welcome/orientation week in which all the International Students are welcomed to Uppsala and the Student Nations. We have had a whole schedule of activities planned and sleep is not one of them. It has been a blast and it is far from over. Tomorrow is Swedish Food Night and the day after is Swedish Swimming( whatever in the hell that is) and a picnic. So let me break it down for you on the glories of this week and the mash of culture:
Monday: OK i lied, it wasn't a whole week. It started on Tuesday. my bad.
Tuesday: CRAYFISH PARTY!!! at Snerikes. We get there and there are tables covered in trays of crayfish with beading looking eyes just daring you to try and figure out how to eat them. We were even given a brochure with horrible cartoon depicting how to eat them. We were given some broccoli pie, bread with garlic mayo( yeah people love mayo here, it is sick), and some alcoholic cider. Then they gave us some schapps for the swedish singing. Swedish schnapps is like pure fire. You are supposed to sip a shot usually at the right
time during a drinking song. My favorite song is called Helan Gore. In English Hell and Gore. It is a fun one. So I figured out that I needed to twist the tail of the crayfish off which resulted in me squirting crayfish liquid all over Toby the German next to me. This happened many times which I don't think he appreciated ha. A Crayfish party is all about Crayfish and drinking and the point is to get drunk because you hardly get any food since the meat you get from crayfish is about the size of my pinky finger. So it goes without being said that we had a good time. A Swedish girl told me Swedes drink so much to keep them happy in the winter. Keeps the suicide rate down. 😊 Then we left the party at went to the club at Snerkies and danced until 2 in the morning. I ended up breaking Neil's necklace on my belt! He was throwing me around in the air, a crazy dancing man. I also ran into two Swedes that I met in Greece this summer which was an insane coincidence.
Wednesday: V-Dala Nation. 3 course dinner. We
all got tickets which assigned us to a seat at these long candlelit tables which had our first course of toast with shrimp on it which we had to eat with a knife and fork..damn i like to eat my hands. I got to sit next to my Australian friend Chris and some cool people from Austria and Germany. We got more schnapps and cider and sang songs and drank. There is a song about Pizza Hut and KFC, what on earth! People thought it was an American song but I have never heard it. Then they gave us the best chicken I've ever had with amazing potato and spinach salad. And a bottle of wine. which no one in my group had much of so it was up to me 😊 For dessert we had kladkaka THE BEST THING EVER. Chocolate cake but really it is like a gormuet brownie from the heavens. After that we rode our bikes to karaoke where I sang I will Survive with a group of my girls. Chris and Neils sang Cry me a River ahaha we all sang along.
Thursday: Oh man...THE PUB CRAWL. 13 pubs in all. Our mission: walk
or crawl to all of them. We only made it to about 5. Emma and I were late so we got put in the last group. Our Swedish leaders were awesome. We hung out with them mostly and had a good time. We wore Swedish ribbons in our hair and tried a drink at every pub where we had about 20 min to enjoy it and then onwards. At one point we got lost and ended up in some random kitchen..our guides were a little drunk as well..haha The night ended at Stockholm Nation where we danced on one of the 5 dance floors. I had a wonderful time and when Emma, Jeppe, Ruby and I left we bought a hot dog from the vendor who frequents the outside of the clubs at one in the morning and then we bought another. Best thing I had all day.
Friday: BBQ in the park/ I didn't really BBQ because you had to pay for one. They sell these one time use BBQ at ICA they are pretty awesome. We played some frisbee and chatted amongst ourselves. I talked with Andy, Chris, and Mark about Linneaus and how he is our
god. They had the idea of us taking a pilgrammage to Linneaus's House. We will have a banner that reads Linneaus is God. haha Linneaus is practically god here. It is the year of Linneaus I kid you not.
well that is it. and i am horribly sick right now it really sucks..but i am going to take it easy today so i can keep up with the rest of the week. love you all.
