Its completely surreal to be spending Australia Day on the other side of the world. I'm sitting here typing this looking out the window onto a field of white! It's -1 degrees, the warmest its been since we arrived, and bits of the snow are starting to melt. I'm told this is a bad thing as once melted, it will likely freeze over to form big patches of ice, making a stroll in the snow all the more treacherous (and I'm having enough trouble staying on my feet as it is!). In lieu of traditional Aus Day celebrations, Adam and I spent the morning playing in the snow in the field opposite where Luke and Maria live. Adam tried in vain to have abit of a kick of the soccer ball (difficult in snow calf deep!) ... read more

Our journey to here, Uppsala SWEDEN, can only be described as a comedy of errors-one that is not yet amusing to us as we continue to recoup from our 48hr travel time, delayed flight, missed flight, and an ongoing drama of lost baggage that remains lost! Still we can manage a wry smile as we retell this tale-one that we hope will be a future source of amusement, rather than of woe (which our current jet lagged melodramatic selves dictate!) It was with an overwhelming sense of relief, moreso than excitement, that we climbed into the car with our trusty travel companions Leah and Tony to head to the airport on Friday afternoon. It had been by far the most stressful week we had experiened together in a very long time but at last we could ... read more

Hi again everyone, Firstly thank you for the comments, I love reading them. Girish sweetie, disregard the email I sent off to you before I found your comments here on the blog site. I will email you again soon. Well, to my horror it seems I do have a touch of jet lag, hopefully it will soon disappear!!!!! A couple of comments about Gothenburgh: Jeff lives in a suburb quite a way out of the city, this is both good and bad. Good because it is in a kind of rural area, bad because it takes him an hour and a half each day to get to work. The good bit though is that there is a small lake very close to where they live. Walking to this lake for a swim yesterday the area reminded ... read more

Allrighty, then, this is my first travelblog in English. For those of you who got this without previous notice, please forgive me for putting you on the list, just remove yourself if you don't want to get notifications on my trip! As the headline says, I'm in Uppsala. This is because it's a lot closer to the Arlanda airport, from which I'm tomorrow flying to New York, than my home is! This is creepy, my first time flying that many hours (still, only 7.5 hours and a direct flight: could be worse) and definitely the first time to the US. I must admit, some of my friends have said " 'scuse me? Where did you say you were going?" since I haven't really had the US as a priority no 1 on my travel list, but ... read more

So I couchsurfed at another place, hung out with a crazy Jamaican, and woke up at 6 am all to catch a flight that was then delayed 6 hours. I now know the Hannover (Germany) aiport like the back of my hand! The ride from Amsterdam to Hannover was nice. I first made friends with 3 Irish boys who were extremely nice and gave me a full out history of why Southern Ireland is NOT part of the UK. They were relatively easy to understand and we had some good laughs together. Then an Australian girl name Melissa got on and sat next to the boys but when the boys were kicked out of their seats by passengers with reserved seats, she came and sat next to me. We had a great conversation together, discovering how ... read more

I've been spending my first month since I quit my job at my parents house in N. Ireland lazing around, relaxing and meeting up with school friends. I've also managed to incorporate a trip to Sweden for a week (11th-19th March) to go skiing in Åre (pronounced 'or-a', I think...) which was wicked fun. I went with Jenny (a friend from university) and her boyfriend (Per) and friends (Bjorn, Nicholas, Hannah, Sarah, Andreas and finally Sandra and Hans - her sister and her sister's boyfriend). A big thanks to them for speaking English everytime I was in the room, putting up with questions about 'weird' swedish food, embarrassing me with their skiing technique (well, it's hardly fair, they learn to ski before they can walk...) and generally making me laugh all day long - was quite ... read more

This past weekend was my last weekend in Sweden. Linn and I headed up to Uppsala Friday after work. Uppsala is a very unique university town... Having been established in 1477, the student life is steeped in tradition. Each student must be a member of a 'nation'... there is one for each region in Sweden. Most people join the nation of the region they are from but you don't have to. Linn is a member of Stockholm's nation. Every nation has a building and usually a club or pub. Nation members get in free and all others pay a small fee. You must have an Uppsala student card to be able to get in. (You can however buy a week pass provided you can show some other student ID - which is what I did). Friday ... read more
