I am sitting in the library of Lulea Tekniska Universitet, where Kai takes engineering classes. The town of Lulea is in Northern Sweden, only a two hour drive from the Arctic Circle. It looks just like Northern Minnesota with an array of coniferous trees, birch, and lakes. I had a week off from classes so I came up here to spend time with Kai. On Sunday, I reserved three trains from Vaxjo to Lulea (totaling 20 hours of travel). On the second train bound for Stockholm, there was some delay and we waited at a stop outside the city for an extra hour. I asked around to figure out what was going on since the speaker on the intercom was addressing the passengers in Swedish. One guy was trying to catch the same train out of ... read more

Greetings again! I recently took a trip to Stockholm for the weekend. I arrived around 9pm Thursday the 11th and met Emily and our friend Cassy a pub close to our hostel. We took the subway to a couple of pubs around town to get a feel of what Stockholm had to offer for our sightseeing weekend. I purchased a subway pass that allowed me 8 rides for about $27 (each ride was good for one hour of transport). Not cheap, but nothing is in Stockholm. It is more expensive than Luleå. Stockholm is a fantastic city...much larger than I had anticipated. The hostel we stayed in for the first night slept 12 people in bunk beds. I woke up in the middle of the night because of a voice that seemed very close to me. ... read more

I Made it! I arrived in Luleå (pronounced Lu-li-yo), Sweden two days ago. My flight took me from Minneapolis to Chicago to Stockholm to Luleå. One of my bags was routed to Sweden instead of Stockholm, but it arrived to my apartment Sunday evening, albeit with a broken shampoo bottle. Luckily my clothes were protected and the mess was easy to clean. Because of visa issues, I arrived at the end of the two week orientation period. Today I rushed around town to try and purchase all of the goods I needed. One of those is a cell phone. I can be reached at anytime now, if calling from the States you can reach me at: 011 46 76-583 29 38. This of course is an international call and will not be cheap. There is a ... read more

Okay so..this is a big deal, although it is more important in some countries than others. In Sweden, it starts with Melodifestivalen, their country's round of it. Melodifestivalen's first rounds are held in cities around the country, like Goteborg, Stockholm, Linkoping, etc. So then the groups that win each of those, compete in the final. The person that wins that gets to go to Eurovision. This year, Sweden's winner was Carola. She went onto the semifinals of Eurovision and secured a spot in the finals, though it was the 22nd spot-a little low on the totem pole. Well, the finals of the contest were tonight. They had people from everywhere. Croatia, Armenia, Israel, France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Bosnia&Herzegovina, Moldova, Greece, etc. So I watched them all sing. Some of them were good and some not so ... read more

Okay so this just happened but: I woke up early this morning. I go into the kitchen and do toast for breakfast. Johan comes in, has breakfast, we watch TV. He left to go to school. Well, I'm sitting there watching TV since Tim McGraw and Faith Hill were on Oprah. Then, the aiphone rings. (For those that don't know, the aiphone is a phone in our common room. Downstairs, you can ring a bell in each person's room when you come to visit or do the aiphone on each floor.) I didn't answer it. Instead, I walk down to the door and find a man there I don't know. Well, I let him in and then he starts to call my name. I was like, "Uhh yeah?" He says, "You are Michelle?" I said, "Umhm." ... read more

Yes, it's Easter Sunday. And let me tell you, it was an interesting Easter for me. Probably the first one that I didn't go to church. I thought about attending the services here, but I would not have understood a word. Anyhow, so yesterday Mia came and got me and we went to her house. It's the cutest. It's a duplex. You walk in the door and there's an entryway. There's the laundry room and the bathroom on the left. On the right is the kitchen. So you keep walking and the left is the dining room, on the right is the living room. Then, there are stairs. You go down them to reach the three bedrooms, computer room, and bathroom. They also have a shared closet. There was a lot of artwork on the walls, ... read more

Time to talk about my volunteering, since it is a rather big part of what I end up doing here most of the time. Okay so-across the street from where I live is the school. It's a middle school, which means it comes before Gymnasium, which is Swedish High School. I basically go into the English classes and help kids, speak with them, have discussions with them, and let them hear what a native speaker sounds like. The teachers are nice and the Headmistress there is too. Her name is Berit. There's also a male Headmaster and they are the school's rektors (Swedish for rector). So, the kids generally dress like punks. Think Good Charlotte without the piercings and you have it. If I had a dime for how many hoodies, Vans, Pumas, baggy pants, and ... read more

Allright, last night there was a party across the street in Vaderleden. It was dubbed the pink and black party, since two friends of mine were having birthdays and one loves black, while the other loves pink. Emilee is the French girl that loves black, while Yan, the Korean girl, loves pink. Anyway, so I convinced Johan to go with me to the party. Lukas, Stewart, Hector, and a bunch of others were already there. So, we went and I saw Martin (the Scottish guy) and Emily (the American girl) and Dan (American guy from NY) and a whole bunch of others I knew. I introduced Johan to a few folks like Lotta the Finnish girl. Maarit, my Finnish friend was also there. Okay so the hallway was lit, and it was the white. The kitchen ... read more

Okay-so before coming here I had never experienced hockey. Funny huh? They have the Tampa Bay Lightning, who are Stanley Cup winners, and the Knoxville Ice Bears, and I had never done hockey. The closest I had ever come was probably watching The Mighty Ducks. Well, I come here and let the fact slip and Johan decides he's going to rectify it. So here we go. First, he took me to his game. The school gym is called Stil and they sponsor intramural teams, exercise classes, and all this other stuff like Ski Alpina, which takes ski trips. So, he plays on the Stil team. Stil Hockey If you go to the profilen bit, and click on #84, you'll see him and his stats. So anyway, he drives me down to the small arena. The Lulea ... read more

Okay okay, so I am bad at updating sometimes. So here's a post to let you know what I was doing when I wasn't updating. I went sledding. They have a hill here, called malmberget. It's a lot of fun. I did get myself covered in snow, though, but no worries. Lukas and I had a snowball fight too. I ended up covered in snow that time too. Another thing, it seems like almost every weekend there is some sort of party here. Well, since last Saturday was April Fool's Day, they had a party to celebrate. They had people dress up as from the ancient cultures that celebrated April Fools' as New Year. This means: Romans, Egyptians, Greeks, Celts, and a few others. So, people came in togas, towels, and kilts, among other things. I ... read more
