One world heritage, one world record and the largest social network in the world I, Ake, have for several years been thinking about visiting the town Luleå in northern Sweden. The main reason is that I wanted to see Gammelstad Church Town. At one time there were a total of 71 church towns in Sweden. They were all located in northern Sweden, the least populated region in Sweden. The church towns were located close to the local church and were only used one night, or at the most two, per week. The villages in northern Sweden were small and far between each other. The population in each village was not large enough for them to have a church of their own. Instead they had to travel to the nearest town to visit the church service. Since ... read more

I currently feel like I am on a long-term holiday as I have alot of down time that I spend exploring the city and campus. Now that orientation period is over and classes are underway there is less organized activities with other exchange students. Downtown Lulea: there are basically three shopping malls in the shopping area of town. There is a mall called Shopping , which is the oldest shopping mall in all of Europe (opened in 1955). There is also one called Strand Galleria and the newest one, Smedjan (which is also the largest it seems of the three). Malls here are a lot different than back home as they have several levels (like 4 floors). For a city with less than 50,000 people or so, the shopping is ... read more

As I adjust to living life in Northern Sweden, I figured I should start a little blog so that people who want to know how I'm doing can keep up to date by reading! I've now been in Sweden for about a week and a half and am starting to settle in. Luleå has a similiar climate to Northern Saskatchewan and similiar terrain as well. The weather has been steady around 12-15 degrees Celcius the past few days with a lot of rain. There are about 80,000 people that live here. My university is called the Luleå University of Technology, or in Swedish, the Luleå tekniska universitet (LTU). About 16,000 students go to the university, so in a lot of ways the size of the city and university are similiar to Regina and the University of ... read more

Well monday i had my last Biocomposite course. Nothing to exciting. To finish the class all i have to do is complete one more assignment and turn in a lab report. YAY! I am still trying to get my online Fronter (access to my classes) to work. My academic advisor has added me to the swedish history class but I cannot access the powerpoints online and my Microbiology class is still listed. UGHH i hate all of these online formalities when it comes to college. I do love my swedish history course! It is very interesting and I am trying to come up with serveral ideas of where to go! One thing is for sure my hunt for a Dala Horse has been unsuccessful thus far but i will prevail! On Thursday Isabel, Santi, and I ... read more

I started my new Swedish history course this week and it was quite interesting. Also im getting very very excited about my best friend getting over to this part of the world! March 5th is still to far away for me! :D Most weeks I have only three classes, 2 (l.25 hour) swedish history, and 1 (1.25 hour) biocomposite course. So I am not really on campus that much and end up having alot of free time. The professors encourage students to take this time to travel :). This week has been uber boring....seriously i had two classes and thats about it. Sorry not to much to report :)... read more

JOKKMOKK! So I was still recovering from my sickness but I had already purchased the ticket for Jokkmokk's Winter Market. So bright and early we all loaded onto a bus at 6am and headed to the small town north of the arctic circle. On the way we actually stopped AT the actic circle! It was extremely cold today and seriously I stepped out of the bus into -40 weather and it was instant frozen! Back in Lulea it was -30 but seriously that ten degrees changes many things! By the way the Arctic circle is about an hour away from Lulea to give you an idea of distance. So after a brief stop and some very cold pictures we got back on the bus and went the last 45min to Jokkmokk. Upon arrival we parked the ... read more

So basically i spent all this week in bed....getting sick is never fun! Isabel went out and got me some cough medicine and after plenty of rest I was ok. But there are a few differences between getting sick in the US and getting sick here. First and foremost....no chicken noodle soup.....i cried. Seriously when I am sick and cold i just want my awesome campels super salty chicken noodle 90cents a can goodness....but not so much here. Actually its hard to find any soup here! Most of it comes in powdered form or has fish in it :-/ Second big problem (as i am sure many of you know) is pharmaceuticals here are quite different. There is no cough syrup, NyQuil, DayQuil, or any sort of decongestant. Instead you can find several forms of ecanacea ... read more

Most of this week was quite boring. I spent most of my time just going to the city center with isabel and santi and walking around. I decided that the Microbiology class was way over my head and also worked on getting into a different class. Finally I was successful and dropped the Micro class and added a Swedish History course. So because of my not having to go to Microbiology I really only had one class this whole week! So it was....ehhhh boring lol. But we did see some very pretty sights in the city center, we also went to Storheden. Storheden - this was quite nice because finally i found a new pillow! A nice latex pillow much better than the stupid airplane pillow that i have been suffereing from. The only down side ... read more
