So I haven’t really done any trips recently, but I figured I’d update you on the little things that have happened and the new stories that have arisen since the Barcelona trip. It’s been two weeks since my last update, so get ready for lots of stories! Let’s see… the week following Barcelona was pretty uneventful overall, minus the finals for my first block of grammar classes, which went pretty well, and The Office premiere (awesome!), so I’ll skip ahead. The following weekend was relaxing by night and stressful by day. Explain? Don’t mind if I do! NIGHTS. Friday night Adam, Daman, and I went and saw “Passengers,” the new Anne Hathaway movie in which she plays a therapist dealing with the surviving passengers of a plane crash, and slowly they begin to disappear. The movie ... read more

About a week ago, we had a group field trip to la Bodega Sierra Salina, located in the mountains in the south of Alicante Province. As we left behind the main highway and drove through winding, country roads with hardly any buildings (just miles and miles of grapes and olives being grown) I began to feel back in my element. All that was missing was some cows and a squirrel or two, although I did hear chickens crowing at the winery. Stepping off the bus, I was cold for the first time since I'v come to Spain as the winery is located at 600m above sea level. Feeling refreshed and invigorated by the crisp country air, I was ready for my wine tour. Disclaimer: I learned a lot about the wine making process during the tour, ... read more

While I must admit that in general, the Spanish are an attractive bunch, there are a few peculiarities that still leave me puzzled. First of all, I have never been in a place where I feel large(this applies to both height and weight) The Spanish women are absolutely tiny, everything about them is minutature. For once, I can walk around and chances are, in any given crowd of Spanish people, I am nowhere near the shortest.(I even had to raise the bicycle seat in the gym the other day) And when I wear heels I'm an absolute giant. However, I also have more meat on my bones than spanish women, every women I see walking down the street looks like a size 00! I do not think I have seen any obese people here. Skinny jeans ... read more

Hola! Well, I’m in Spain, safe and sound. I’ve decided to start a travel blog to keep everyone updated on the big events here… travel, festivals, etc. Of course, I still plan to keep up on emails and whatnot, but I don’t have internet in my house, so personal replies are going to take a bit longer, and this way I don’t have to repeat myself on the major events. You can all just check them out here! For those of you who don’t know, if you subscribe to this blog, you’ll receive an email every time I update, so it works out pretty well. Alrighty, an update on what’s happened thus far (beware, I’m probably going to ramble; I have lots of stories and nobody to tell them to!): Flights. First off, I HIGHLY recommend ... read more

After finding some last minute accommodation online we were feeling at ease on our express train trip to Alicante. We arrived close to 11am and decided we would attempt to walk to our hotel. After walking for a good 30 mins we realised that due to roadworks there was no way we could continue walking toward the hotel, so we turned around disheartened and made our way back into town to grab some lunch and start again. Rob realised we could catch a tram towards the area of our hotel so we jumped on and made our way into the next suburb. Getting to the hotel was an effort in itself, steep inclines and dirty dusty roads were the norm until we arrived at hotel - which from its exterior, seemed lovely. Although on closer inspection ... read more

Well, today was our first day of our intensive Spanish course which we take for 3 hours a day, 5 days per week. I was placed in the middle of three possible levels (they divided ourselves up based on the results of our placement exam) which I consider an accomplishment seeing as I haven't taking a course in Spanish in almost 2 years and most of the people here are majoring in Spanish(more about the intelligence of my fellow Americans later on in the post). The class does not seem as if it is going to be very difficult and as my grades from abroad are going to be pass, fail on my williams transcript, I am not very worried at least about this first class. Part of the class was spent going over some colloquial ... read more

The food in Spain is very different from what I am used to in the United States but I must admit that I am enjoying the switch from the over processed food to a more natural, fresh ingredient based diet. This part of Spain (the southeastern coast) eats a mediterrean diet, full of lots of olive oil, fish, and bread at every meal. They put olive oil on everything, the bread, salads, meat, fish, every thing is covered in olive oil. At least I know that my hair will be healthy. My family cooks a lot of fish, especially tuna, but it tastes a lot better than the canned stuff we have at home. They also have a lot of really fresh cheeses here and one of my favorite things to do at meals is cut ... read more

Yol ortasında masa aramak üzere bir süper markete girdim. İstediğim masayı bulamadım fakat işimiz görülsün diye çok komik bir ütü tahtası aldım. Ayşeciğimin sağduyusu galip geldi. Danielle came to visit us in Alicante for 3 fantastic days and she was our first guest in our new apartment! Danielle is currently living in London and recently went on a holiday to Poland so was exciting to hear about that! We spent a lot of time in the sun, a little too much for Danielle (and her poor red tummy). We hung at our local beach, people watched and enjoyed the shopping coming to us (see photo). One day we drove to some waterfalls an hour from our apartment. They were freezing, but absolutely refreshing. I loved getting out feeling clean and not salty or smelling like chlorine. On Danielle’s last day we caught the local bus (coach style) into Alicante city. We did lots of walking and got a bit lost a few ... read more
