Our apartment and new area - Los Arenales del Sol Moving from Japan to Spain was quite a shock and a little difficult. Barely anything about one another can be compared. Ok, maybe that both countries don’t speak English. Spain is an extremely relaxed country, something we are totally not use to. Everything in Spain takes ten times as long, and they don’t seem to mind! Summer time is especially bad as everyone is on holidays, and the people who are working, finish early so they can go to the beach! Our swimming pool rules even say that no swimming is allowed between 3 and 5 pm - siesta time. (I don’t really want to complain about Spain, but these things made moving here quite difficult.) Now we are settled in our apartment in Alicante with ... read more

It took one of the more difficult travel days I have experienced but we made it to Alicante, a cute coastal city in the southeast of Spain. When we got to the train station in Barcelona, around 11 in the morning, we were told that all trains to Alicante were full until 6 pm. Not being able to check our bags and wander around we posted up in the train station and basically camped out for six hours. It wouldn't have been so bad, I had rolled out my really nice camping pad that inflates and me and Shannon had just gotten comfortable for what was sure to be a long and satisfying nap (which was needed because we spent the night in a group of guys hotel room, in town for a bachelor party, after ... read more

Just some random photos from Alicante and when we went to the F1 Grand Prix in Valencia! Also some random information... Did you know that Chupa Chups are Spanish? Chupa Chups is a Spanish lollipop company founded by Barcelona native employer Enric Bernat in 1958. The name comes from the Spanish verb chupar, meaning "to suck"!. Chupa Chups were also originally called just Chups and the plastic stick use to be wooden! I also just found out that when Katie told me her favourite wine was the Alicante Bouchet, I felt stupid because I didn't know about it thinking it was from Alicante, Spain (the city in which we live for those who don't know) but then looked it up and discovered it is from the Barossa! Why is it called 'Alicante' when there are no ... read more

PENSION GAP : FINAL PREPARATIONS 22 July 2008 1. Paperwork After recently reading in the press about James Pennington, a nineteen-year old from Wimbledon, who sustained severe injuries after a moped accident in Vietnam and then discovered that his insurance policy didn’t cover the costs of medical care and repatriation, one gets a little bit paranoid about travel insurance. This boy’s parents thought that they had done a good job of researching policies on offer to ensure that their son was well-covered for his Gap Year travels. He had the accident in May, just four months in to his travel year and it cost the parents 25,000 pounds. As the boy’s father said to the press, when disaster strikes, insurance companies will happily find a loophole! We are notoriously bad in our family when it comes ... read more

1. DECISIONS- made in Spain April 2008 Why should a “Gap Year” be the prerogative of the young? The idea of a Gap Year is to have a break between the world of study and the world of work; in other words, between university and career. Well I never got the chance to do that. Therefore, a gap between the world of work and retirement seems thoroughly appropriate. With this in mind I’m starting to plan a trip around the world to gentle myself in to the strange concept of not having to get up on Monday mornings to start the working week. It is an alien concept. I’m actually a bit scared of it. Having spent years saying that when I retire I shall do this and have the time to study that, the thought ... read more

Alicante Fire Festival We have not ventured into the city too many times at night as, even not during a festival, it is packed and difficult to park! Alicante is quite a touristy city; it almost feels like we are on a permanent holiday! On the main strip, there are lots of little stalls selling handmade knickknacks, cheap clothes and also lots of black men with copy everything, bags, sunglasses, t-shirts, watches, CDs, DVDs, neatly laid out on sheets on the ground. Something that I don’t remember from Europe before, is that here there are also black women on the streets who braid girls’ hair, much neater and more detailed than hair braiding in Bali. A few nights before the actual burning, we went into the city to look at the handmade paper sculptures. I read ... read more

Friday we visited La Font Roja, a natural park about 2 hours away from Valencia. We listened to a lecture from a professional ornithologist, and then we headed out into the field. We hiked up a mountain, viewing plants and bird nest boxes along the way. The hike was tough! (Although our guide, who spoke no English, told us, in jest, that it was "an easy walk"...ha) Although our guide spoke no English, he was a great leader and kept us on our toes with his sense of humor. Once we reached the top of the mountain, we took a much appreciated break and drank in the amazing views. After the hike down, we ate lunch (at 3:30...), another Menú del Día. The meal was fantastic. I loved every bit of it. After lunch, we headed ... read more
