Hi! I'm finally back in Segovia from my fall break travels. To be honest, it feels really good to be back. When the bus pulled into Segovia from Madrid I had a sense of coming home, which is nice after going so long without! Vacation was good. For me it was a needed break from the overwhelming amount of Spanish that I'm constantly immersed in. It's good for me, but some nights I go to bed with a headache from so much spanish!! It comes easier with time, though. Anyway, let me tell you more about my trip. Friday (9-28) I woke up at 5am to catch the 6am bus to Madrid. True to form, I ended up running, full-tilt with hiking backpack and all, to the bus station because I was running late. Traditionally Spaniards ... read more

hello all, it's been awhile, i know, but didn't i tell you that this was going to be difficult?? updating apparently just isn't what i'm good at. since i've last updated i've: *changed rooms (i switched with my brother and now i have a desk, closet, and a window that goes to OUTSIDE. i'm 10x happier with it) *went on our first excursion to el Escorial & Valle de los Caídos *started and have gotten a week or 2 into classes *had an excursion to Madrid i'm sure more little things have happened in between, but those are the big things anyway. more detail... changing rooms went well, apparently my brother used to live in the room that i used to have, so he didn't really mind that much that i switched with him anyway. now ... read more

It’s been two weeks since I first arrived in Spain, and I’m feeling pretty comfortable. I love speaking the language, and besides a few glitches, I’ve been able to communicate pretty efficiently. However, during the first week, my brain literally felt tired from constantly trying to communicate in Spanish. I’m living in Segovia, Spain, which is just about 45 minutes from Madrid. It’s a tiny tiny full of beautiful ancient cathedrals, churches, monasteries, castles, and lots of chic bars and cafes. All the buildings are made of stone, and the town is absolutely precious in the warm colors of the late afternoon sun! We’ve had beautiful weather as well with temperatures between 70 and 90 degrees. My family is darling. My mother is a tiny little lady with tons of energy, and she is a wonderful ... read more

hola, i´ve decided that this whole blog thing is going to be hard to do--there´s so much to tell and so little time to write!! so you´ll be getting the abbreviated version of my life while i´m here...even though you may not know it. ;) since being here and posting last i´ve toured the castle Alcazár, hung out at the aquaduct a lot, done lots of homework (including an entire Saturday dedicated to photography), and gone out to celebrate birthdays and just being in spain. Alcazár is beautiful. inside and out. someday (when i figure out what the best way to do it is) i´ll put up my photos so you can all ooo and ahhh at them! the aquaduct is also wonderful! ridiculously old...it doesn´t transport water anymore, but does make for a beautiful picture ... read more

¡Hola from España! How is everyone?? I thought I’d put together a list of friends and family and email you all what I’ve been up to. I plan to send them out now and then, you can read them if you’d like, forward them or do whatever. ‘no me importa!’ meaning, it doesn’t matter to me. :D My first week in Spain has been wonderful! I live in an apartment with a host family. I have a mother and a brother my age, but he will be going back to college in Salamanca, about 1 hour from here in Segovia. My home is very spacious and has many antique pieces that are fun to take time to look at when I relax. There is a balcony on the upstairs floor which looks over the west side ... read more

hola todos--hello everyone!! first, let me just say that i do know the rules of grammer and capitalization--it´s just that these keyboards are a bit different and i don´t have much time, so the un-capitalized version is what you´re going to get. ¡¡lo siento!! i´m offically in Spain. Segovia, actually. and it´s marvelous. :) my host family is very nice; my mama (Ana) is a short, cute woman who tends to talk to herself while she´s cooking. she loves it when i say that i like the food. (which is fun, because i always do) we have lunch and dinner together and the food is delicious. but, honestly, not that much different than American food. since i´ve been here i swear i´ve had chicken noodle soup and spaghettios! except this kind tastes better and is homemade ... read more

We spent the night last night in Segovia and have just returned to Madrid this afternoon. Segovia, in contrast to Toledo, has an undeniable buzz to it. It doesn´t lack for soul, that´s for sure. Nor does it lack for party spirit! Our hotel was a gorgeous little place on what we discovered is known as party street in Segovia. And yes, they partied and partied and partied. To about 5am in fact. We flaked well before this and all I can say is thank god for ear plugs! They saved our sanity and our sleep. We wondered the streets aimlessly, losing ourselves in the meandering paths and discovering the glorious parks that surround the city where we strolled and admired the truly amazing city above us. The castle was what fairy tales are made of. ... read more

Since Paris we have driven west to the D-Day Beaches then through the south of France and into Spain. We have decided that rather than going into Madrid we will see Barcelona instead on the way back up the south coast. The D-Day beaches were incredible to see and feel. It was freezing cold and a bit drizzly so it set the mood for wandering through the war cemetaries. The cemetaries of the Brittish and Canadians were the most interesting as each headstone is personalised with a message from the family rather than just a name and rank. They also have more flowers and garden beds whereas the American cemetary at Omaha beach was just a mass of white crosses in immacualte green lawns. We had planned to see a museum or two but the free ... read more

On the day I went to Segovia I also took a bus to "La Granja" about 10 miles away. La Granja was built by Phillip V, the first monarch of the Spanish Buorbons. He was born at Versailles in 1683 and enjoyed the gardens there so much he wanted to model La Granja after Versailles. The palace built was modest and he put most of his effort into the gardens. Because La Granja was on a hill you can´t see all the garden like you can at Versailles but it still is a place of beauty and a farvorite weekend get away for the Spanish. There is a huge man made lake at the top of the gardens that collects the water that is used to operate the more than 30 fountains, the slope of the ... read more
