Best laid plans and all that. After a busy week packing up the house we finally set off on our travels. A 10-week tour of Spain and Portugal returning through France. But first a few days in Cumbria to see family before catching the Plymouth-Santander Ferry. It should have then been simple a straightforward drive down the M6 and M5, a stop near Totnes in Devon then a short hop before embarking. Just south of Birmingham I arranged, albeit late some breakdown and personal insurance. At the end of the conversation the very nice lady run through a checklist of thing we should have Ehic card, (tick) insurance (tick) driving licence (tick) Logbook (aaaagh) I checked we had it but in the rush to pack up it was still in the folder back in storage. Dilemma? ... read more

Well, after yesterdays victory comes with todays defeat. The slight discomfort I experienced yesterday with my shin splint has blossomed into a full blown searing pain with every step. I wrap the leg first thing in the AM, but its too late. Yesterdays pace wreaked havoc with the injury. I walk a few hundred yards, stop and try different or more wrapping to no avail. It's so painful I cannot enjoy or even think about the great weather and beautiful surroundings. I continue to limp, and drag my leg on. Making the progress of a sea slug. Uphill provides some relief, down hill is very painful, flat is less painful but still ugly. After 10K of painful progress I make it to a town, where I am determined to get a taxi to my next location. ... read more

Today we woke with the sun coming up over the Bay of Biscay. Doesn’t that sound romantic? It is until you head outside and find it is not as warm as you would like it to be. Before heading out for the day we enjoyed a very nice breakfast as part of the included price. The large cup of coffee was one of the nicest we have had in Spain so far. During breakfast we had a great chat with a German couple from Frankfurt who have been coming to this hotel every year for the past five years. A short drive away is the historic village of Comillas. The beach looks fabulous and we can but wonder how crowded it must get in the summer. Not sure about the water temperature though. The Atlantic is ... read more

Geo: 43.3856, -4.29151As great as Santander is, one of the best things about the city is its proximity to a number of great little towns that are perfect for day tripping. I originally planned to visit Comillas last year, but at the last minute decided to visit Santillana del Mar instead. So Comillas was the choice today! I had an idea of finding a way to visit both Comillas and San Vicente de la Barquera, but the bus connections are terrible once off season hits. If I stick to the original plan, I'd only have two-three hours in each town. So the only options are to spend a few hours in each town, or the entire day in one of them. But ... Comillas was too pretty to stick around for only a couple of hours, ... read more
