Santa Cruz is sited on the slopes of a volcanic crater. It was an important port in the Spanish empire. The main street is a pedestrian precinct with many historic houses and residences. The Iglesias de El Salvadore sits in the Plaza de Espana. On the shoreline there are the Casas de Los Balcones, old houses with lovely wooden balconies. Calle O Daly leads North towards the replica of Christopher Columbus ship. Many cruise ships visit Santa Cruz but these do not detract from the port and the numerous bars and restaurants add to the atmosphere. We walked from Los Cancajos to Santa Cruz then wandered around the hilly streets and had coffee and cake.... read more

, We flew from Manchester UK to a small rock in the ocean. The airport for La Palma is small, we are quickly outside in the sun and the transfer to our hotel takes 5 minutes! There is a peaceful, isolated feeling here. Just the noise of the waves crashing onto the dark sandy beaches of Los Cancajos our resort for 2weeks. We are by the sea with towering mountains in the distance and we can see the port of Santa Cruz. The temperature Is very pleasant around 25c. Not bad for November. Our hotel Hacienda San Jorge has a wonderful garden with lots of different trees and shrubs. This surrounds a lovely swimming pool. There is also a resident parrot, some ducks and a family of cats!... read more

The ship is in the water! That means cooler conditions and more lights. We are back on water restrictions because three of the four tanks are in the process of being repaired. The families have moved back to the ship. Things are still on schedule to go to Tenerife sometime at the beginning of August. Some bunkering was done today (loading of fuel). The work continues to the inside of the ship. I have been working long hours in the café and store. Our staff was down to three because some long-term people take a vacation during dry dock. I mostly sold cold drink and phone cards in the evening. Sometimes I made popcorn if enough people wanted it. Last weekend I had off on Saturday and most of Sunday. A group of us went to ... read more

La Palma exploded into being with the enthusiasm typical of volcanic islands, creating a teardrop shape and an impressive height for a diminutive base. Unlike some of the other Canary Islands it hasn’t experienced a similar explosion of package tourism. The Canary Islands didn’t feature very highly on my travel list but they should have done. Having spent the past six months on the islands, I am eating snobbish-traveller humble pie. La Palma is a place I’ve visited several times (home as it is to wonderful landscapes and my even more wonderful mum;-) but I’ve been lucky enough to call it home for a good chunk of 2011. La Palma is a walking island. Whether you consider yourself a walker or not is entirely irrelevant. With volcanic craters and mountain ridges, pine forests and lava flow, ... read more

Splendid views over the Aridane Valley volcano mountain burnt in the foreground (its eruption took place at the end of 15th century). The first autumn rains alfombran the surroundings with striking volcanic pyroclastic tapestries of microscopic plants. The ghostly fog effects justify the popular name of witches plain. Snapshot: The red eye flight took us DC. Here to report the Obama house is standing with lots of barricades. We met with Michael´s college friend Ted. The DC weather was wonderful. ...though we could not find a single banana anywhere near the White house!!! With a two hour delay, we somehow managed to catch our flight from Spain to the Canary Islands. With volcanic rocks, black beach sand, and palm trees we are enjoying our time with Sigi and Papa Polenz Banana Index: Bananas are everywhere. Exc'pt near the White house). So many in fact, groves are found right along cities. Because of tough tariffs these smaller type bananas are only shipped to Spain. Costing only 0.20/pound on this island. In rough times, locals would collect pine needles to use as cushion for bananas when ... read more
