Happy Friday :-) We have been keeping our workout schedule pretty steady these last 2 weeks! Combining with 30-50 minutes of cardio with an additional 45 of either weights and exercises for arms, legs, what have you. However, yesterday the weather was amazing, so pauline convinced me to walk up one of our mountains instead of go to the gym. I was thrilled! We walked all the way up this mountain and I have to say, my legs are hurting! It did the job. It was hot but beautiful, and not to be cliche but, the hike was worth the view! I hiked a few hours of the day and we found some cool little spots. Here are some pictures to see the little adventure I had. Scroll Down :)... read more

HAPPY VALENTINES DAY So I am in my fourth week here and I am starting to get stressed about travel. This may overwhelm you but here is my list, keep in mind these are places that I'd be lucky to see and know they may not all happen: Lisbon Porto Paris (duh) French basque villages London Copenhagen Brussels Amsterdam Rome Florence Milan Monaco Geneva Interlaken Prague Barcelona Valencia Alicante Palma de Mallorca Málaga Ibiza The cities within Spain I think I will make happen, but it's those far away locations that I worry about. So I know this is a lot and it may not all happen, but I want to do my best to see as much as possible. I am trying to think of ways to make a few happen in one trip and ... read more

Good afternoon! (Or morning for most of you) It has been a while, but there has been so much going on that I can never decide how long/short to make these posts so I will just go with it :-) First, The last few days there has been SOOO much rain. I expected it to come at some point. However, the first 2 weeks we had 0 rain, and then a bunch this past weekend!! We started our real classes too this past week. At Deusto, they let you try out the semester long classes the first week which was last week following orientation and I think I will just go with 12 credits (that is what Dayton recommends for study abroad.) I am going to do my upper level Spanish, Elaboration of Web messages (creating ... read more

Hello!! I have my exam for the intensive Spanish course I completed on Monday, and I also have orientation too. All exciting! Now to the point of this blog title! I have never been much of a coffee person so I do not usually find myself going into a lot of coffee shops, but today I wanted hot tea and I found myself in this quaint and cozy café with my roommate. The pastries they had laid out were just beautiful!!! I just HAD to take a picture. I ordered a tea called "frutas del bosque" which directly translates to "berries." It was very good. A little sweet but not too sweet. I definitely got my proper intake of antioxidents. It was a rainy day today unfortunately, but sitting in this café made it no problem ... read more

Hola! This first week here has been unbelievable and I love this city so much already. I never want to leave :) A few things I have learned/noticed: 1. Dogs don't wear leashes This makes me laugh. People like to just walk around the streets and bring along their dogs, but the dogs are so tame that they just walk along next to the owners. I think this is so funny considering everyone in Glen Ellyn walks their dog all over, and you never see a leash-less dog. But here, so much more laid back and the dogs just walk along however they wish. 2. Units of measure I knew this already, but it never affected me until now, since I am now conversing with different cultures. I was asking my Swedish roommate what shoes to ... read more

To whoever thinks overnight plane rides are great, why? My experience was a little bit weird, in my opinion. I got on the giant plane and right at the beginning I could tell it would be a long and boring flight for me. I couldn't sleep, even with a Tylenol PM. So I watched a movie, Toy Story 2 hehe. I just noticed some weird things on board, like I would turn around and some (actually most people had like 2-3 seats for themselves. Why? I didn't understand. Were people moving around and I didn't know? But there I was crammed in and chlostrophpobic with all my stuff. I can't complain but it was a little weird. Good news is, the flight was more like 9.5 hours when I expected it to be 12ish. The Madrid ... read more

From my first impression of San Sebastián (Donostia in Basque)—my walk from the Amara train station to my hostel—I was in awe. The streets nearby felt like a “Hapsburg” style, a similar design to my memories of Vienna, the Czech Republic, and Trieste. This isn’t normally a style that I love outright, and it was surprising to see it in Spain, because I don’t remember seeing it anywhere else here. Streets are lined with regal 4-ish story stone buildings that share walls. Many have tiny window ‘balconies’. However, in contrast to other places I’ve been with this style, the streets were wide enough that I didn’t feel claustrophic among them. The city being so close to the sea and the river also made it feel more open, less like the buildings imposed on the street. As ... read more

As I’ve lived in Spain, my ‘Spain Bucket List’ has grown and grown. But one place that has been on my list since before I moved here was Bilbao. For winter vacation, I went to the Basque Country before visiting a good friend in Brittany, northwestern France. Flying on Christmas Day was overall a good idea (due to price, lack of passengers, surprising cheeriness of staff), but I arrived too early to the tiny La Coruña airport. I had to wait in the main entrance for a while until they opened the gift shop that acted as the route to the security clearance. I was happy, though, that the duty-free shop (after security) was open because I wanted to buy some Galician liquor (crema de orujo or café licor were both options) as a host present ... read more

Have you ever felt you would love a travel destination even before arriving? It may seem strange and I admit I've visited Spain before, but as soon as I landed in the Basque country this destination fit me like a glove. Friends and colleagues have given the region rave reviews, and I was excited to board a Qatar Airways flight to Paris to commence five wonderful weeks in Europe. I spent Christmas Eve relaxing at my favourite hostel in Paris near Gare du Nord. St Christopher's Inn is a big and impressively run hostel, and features a great bar where I commenced the traditional process of letting my cares from home slowly slip away. The beauty of travel ensures the things that matter at home become less important as each day goes by on the road. ... read more
