A day of driving, and despite making some really good progress for most of our journey, as has been the case on all the drives, there was about a 30km section towards the end that took forever (well, over an hour, which is forever when you’ve been doing 30km in 15 mins and your butt is sore from 6 hours in the car). Spain gave us superbly warm (about 34C, warm) “ola” to us at about 4.30pm local time. It had been a long day so we went straight to the hotel to get a bit settled and give the boys a nap. We’re staying at the Ibis in Irun which is a small town just inside the Spanish border. It’s a bit of a nothing town, but we’re staying here, and in the Ibis, because ... read more

So I guess you all want an update huh? In case you didn't know, I moved back to the North of Spain, to Basque Country, back in February. I'll just start off by saying "I'm loving it!" I'm not working yet because you need a visa to get a job and you need a job to get a visa. I also advertised my services as a native English teacher, but no one seems to care about English, except for one guy who is going to Japan in the summer. (How does that work?) So basically i just go to Spanish class for 1.5 hours 4 days a week. Except I have been on spring break for 2 weeks. Unfortunetly, my Spanish is kind of at a plateau. I guess I could actually study, but... Anyways, Life ... read more

Wednesday morning I woke up early, around 6:30 and took the metro to the Termibus station with the speed of a native where I caught the coach bus to San Sebastian, or Donostia, depending on where in Spain one is from (Donostia is Euskara…I’m in Basque country, folks!). I arrived in Plaza Pio XII and was planning on walking to the Parte Vieja (Old Town), but managed somehow to quickly surmise the bus schedule in Euskara and catch a bus that instant to the Alameda del Boulevard, saving myself a lot of time. I didn’t even have to look at street names to know where I was headed because I could sense exactly where the port was just 200 or so meters ahead of me. It was before 8:30 am and there were few people strolling ... read more

I left for Bilbao, Spain in the early afternoon of Tuesday. I arrived in the city center around 3 o’clock and headed straight for the Guggenheim Museo Bilbao from the bus stop. Upon first walking up to the Guggenheim museum, I am greeted by “Puppy” the 42-foot tall West Highland Terrier made completely of flowers (around 60,000). “Puppy” is the creation of Jeff Koons. The museum is absolutely striking with the limestone and titanium collaboration, which assumes the appearance of glistening fish. I went straight through the main entrance without wandering around the structure because I saw a queue of children lining up to enter the group tours part and did not want to compete with a large group of children for gallery space. I strolled right in and declined the use of the audio-tour tapes ... read more

Where to start? Basically this place is amazing. Am in a small village called Larrasoana and will be making an entry into Pamplona tommorow. For a day of rest and perhaps the odd drink or two. Was able to make the train that took me to Saint Jean Pied De Porte on Tuesday and started my Camino the next day. I crossed the Pyranees the next day. Can´t say that aim in life was never on my list but if you walk across the bloody things you will want to add it. Was really stunning up there. I do mean up as you climb 1300 metres. Spent last night in a huge Albergue for a princely 5 euros. Not bad except I had to share with 129 others! No bother most were too knackered to care ... read more

The train to Bilbao should have taken less than an hour. But passing green little valleys scarred by the proliferation of high rise blocks and desolate industrial projects, it ended up being closer to four.I arrived hot, sweating and without the slightest idea of where I was staying Construction projects were everywhere. I had set of along the riverbank in the hope of finding a tourist office, but so much of the pavement was dug up that I kept having to switch river banks. Bilbao is situated on a flood plain in the centre of a river valley so, unusually for a big city, green hills are always in view. Rather than offer an attractive escape from the urban reality though, partially hidden by a skyline of cranes and incomplete tower blocks though, the surrounding greenery ... read more

Patrick Ross was the most interesting of my various, all to brief aquaintences. A burnt-out violin prodigy , with an oversized goatee. He teaches music in Vermont, and is, from my observations a borderline alcoholic. He disapeared sometime on a friday night, after babbling drunkenly in french canadian (which he speaks fluently) for an hour. As expected, I didn´t see him again. There is a strange complicity that often develops among longer term travellers, an unconscious understanding that goes beyond the norms of conventional social conduct. Often a complete stranger will become your most loyal companion or most trusted friend, within the space of a few hours. Inevitably, as is the general idea when travelling, one of you moves on. Maybe email adresses are exchanged, or vague plans to meet up are discussed, but the unspoken ... read more

Well we moved on from Barcelona...west to San Sebastián, which is a much different place. It is a small city about 180,000 compared to however many million people there are in Barcelona. But wow...I know that Barcelona reminded me of Mexico City, but the longer I was there the more it made me see the differences. It really is a beautiful city, so much of it is just down right beautiful and there is always something happening. One day outside our hostel there was a festival and parade going on, for what reason, nobody knew but down our street came 20 foot tall people (not really they were in costumes) and bands of small children...then another day there was a marathon and everyday on the street near our hostel, Las Ramblas, there were street performers and ... read more

That is the one word that comes to mind when I want to try to describe San Sebastian. We pulled in via bus around 3 in the afternoon yesterday...San Sebastian is a smaller town, about 180,000 people, nestled against small mountains that tower over the Cantabrian Sea...our hostel is amazing, a small historic house owned by VIrginia who is one of the most welcoming and comforting women we´ve met thus far...feels like home, comfy beds, lots of little nooks and crannies to journal, balconies overlooking a school yard where spanish children are laughing and playing football and raquetbal...when we arrived it was raining. IN fact one of my favorite things about yesterday was falling asleep to the rhythm of the rain, reminded me of the Pacific Northwest. THis morning we woke up to completely blue skies...Blair, ... read more

It's a typically English trait to ascribe intentions to the weather ("It's threatening to rain" etc.) but yesterday it really did seem to be out to get me... I'd got up late after carnival night (of which more later) and after breakfast decided to take a walk around the sweep of San Sebastian's (Donostia in Basque) bay with the ultimate intention of taking the funicular to the top of the headland on the western side. It wasn't a particularly inspiring day, in fact it was probably the worst of winter weather - the sort of grey, windless, drizzly conditions that hang around for days. The rain knew exactly what it was doing, as soon as I got within a 100yds of the funicular it picked up enough to put me off the idea. Instead I decided ... read more
