Exhaustion hit today! Or was it last night after our Madrid night out? I woke up today feeling so tired and just knew I was going to get sick bad! Most the day was spent driving to Bilbao from Madrid. I slept pretty much all the way only waking up to have lunch in Burgos. Burgos was a small town. As it was Sunday not much was open apart from some restaurants, cafes and souvenir shops. Todd and I had lunch with Nancy and Joe (from Colorado, USA). They had cheeseburgers and I had Spaghetti Bolognese. It was pretty good actually. Afterwards Nancy and browsed around the shops. As I said before not much open. She bought some gelato and I tried to hunt down some moisturizer. Back on the bus and back to sleep. My ... read more

The journey to Bilbao was actually pretty painless. I was anticipating major trouble since, in their foresight, the Spanish and French trains run on different gauges and the whole Spanish public transporation system is not supposed to be very good. You would not know it from our trip though. After an interesting trip to the train station, we just rode the train for forty minutes to Irun, which is the first town on the Spanish side of the border, and hopped on the bus to Bilbao that left ten minutes later. (Patrice got pulled over by the flamboyant French police. Instead of pulling him over in a car, the tight pants and high boots wearing cop stepped out from behind a building and pointed at the car. Poor Patrice managed to talk his way down to ... read more

thank god. the food here is much better. ok i know that i haven´t updated ina bit, we´ve been so busy traveling haven´t had a chance to. anyway, we´re in spain, and the weather here is 85 today. gorgeous day! i went shopping earlier, and went into the guggenheim here, which was amazing. i got to walk inside some of richard serras monumental sculptures, something i´ve wanted to do as long as i can remember. they were amazing. the biggest one is made of 7 steel plates and weighs 120 tons. and the most amzing part, nothing is held together, no pins into the flor, no sodering, just gravity. to stand inside one of those you really get a sense of how small and fragile you are. i stood inside one of the work and was ... read more

The room we have at the hostel is nice....good to have our own room for a change...we needed it since we have laundry hanging all over the bathroom¡ I don´t think they have laundrymat here in Spain..I remember they didn´t in Mexico. you simply had someone come into the house to do it, might be the same here. Unless we can find one, or at least a fast running stream we´re going to be pretty rank by the time we get out of Spain and Portugal. Went over travel plans again last night; we´re revising them as we go. We´re off to Leon tomorrow in search of sandals. Gary: mailed the package home today. Don´t hold your breath waiting for it. it went a barco (by boat)...estimated time of arrival 1-2 months. So we´ll stay in ... read more

Finally we´re beginning to thaw out!! Arrived in Bilboa this morning at 10:15am. We had to be at the airport at 6 am so we went to bed early last night. Stayed at Harwich Hill Farm in Bishop´s Crossing near the Stansted airport. A beautiful place. Got to sleep on real bed for the first time in a week. When we got there the first thing the innkeeper said was ´´would you like some tea.....now that´s england. So disappointed we couldn´t rent a car because of the bank holiday, would have liked to see more of the counytryside closer up, but since it rained all the time I guess it doesn´t matter. The gardens at the Inn were breathtaking..yes they take their gardening very seriously here. The pace is up for sale 1.5 million pounds if ... read more

The title of this blog is "None of this was a mistake"...its my new favorite Spanish song, and well, the only one I can sing along to knowing the words. I had many demands for more pictures, so I added them to my last blog and to this one. As I was looking through them, I noticed that pretty much all of them are "nights out"....hmmm. I swear we don't party very often!! And unfortunetely, my camera that I bought in December decided to die on me, so there will be no more until August when I can come home and fix it. A) it did not die during a night of partying (it died in the mountains for no reason) and B) yes I know I could fix it here but they want to charge ... read more

The day started in tears as Kaspar managed to roll himself off the bed while mum and dad were looking the other way. Fortunately he has inherited his dad’s football hardened head and after a couple of tears everyone was right as rain (not even a shiner to show for his first major encounter with the laws of gravity). We were keen to stay close to home given we will be driving all day tomorrow, so after hearing very little about it we headed around the corner to the medieval town of Hondaribbia. Despite our initial concerns that it would be a bit of a fizzer, Hondaribbia - the town known for its gables and eaves no less - was jam packed with interesting old tales. We started with the colourful painted houses in the town ... read more

Today we spent the day out at the seaside Port of San Sebastian (Donostia in Basque) which is about a 20 km drive from Irun. We had read good things about the city in the lonely planet and had some personal recommendations as well, plus we were looking forward to our first real taste of Spain and its culture, so needless to say we had fairly high expectations. But first things first - breakfast. We decided to upload the Ibis buffet breakfast for 6 Euros each which was well worth it, good strong coffee for Gabor, tea for Sarah and Kaspar had his first taste of dried apricot which was a hit. Sarah announced that there would be no more buttery chocolate pastries for her - which is a big ask as we have been having ... read more
