So it's Monday morning and I just realized I only have 4 more days of classes and then I have finals...ewww... It will be sad to leave the beautiful beach and my new friends, but I'm ready for a change of scenery. San Sabastian is great, but how any days in a row can you lay on the beach and walk around the same streets? I know I shouldn't complain, but I'm ready to see the rest of Spain! I have my train tickets and my hostal reservations all confirmed for Granada, and I hope that nothing goes wrong this time! I have a single room at the hostal with my own private bathroom, which will really be nice. But the good thing about the hostal is that there will be other young peope there, so ... read more

Today started off raining, but it ended up being the ideal day! I went for coffee in the morning with an Australian girl who had eclectic muscial tastes and was a big fan of Tommy Emmanuel. I spent the entire afternoon at the beach and hanging out with the people I had met the previous night. I went for a nice swim in the Atlantic, and got a nice tan. TGV to Paris overnight to meet Bob!!!... read more

After the previous night's shananigans, I was in a shitty shitty mood the entire day. So I decided to go to the beach alone and avoid any human contact for fear of creating a situation... Fortunately the weather was in my favour and relaxing at the beach made everything better. My night ended up being spectacular. I ran into a guy who I had met the first night from South Africa who had just set up his own hostel, and his friend, who was an electrical engineer, was there visiting him. We talked about travelling, and nerdy EE stuff, and ended up getting VERY drunk. I had a bottle of red wine, a shot of Absinthe, a shot of caliente (vodka + tobasco), 2 cale muchos (red wine + coke), and probably something else too. The ... read more

After a long but nice train ride from Madrid through green mountains and dark clouds, I arrived in San Sebastian in the evening. When I arrived at my hostel, I learned that I would be sharing a room with 5 other girls - I was happy :) One of the girls was there when I arrived, she was Australian and very nice - the others, and most other people from the hostel, had already left for a Pinxos (= tapas) tour. I was pretty tired from travelling though, and only wanted to grab some food and go to bed. I went out to a bar and got some food, and then returned to the hostel. Then the worst part of my trip to date happened. At about 5am, the 4 other girls returned. They were all ... read more

Sooo I know you have all been waiting in suspense to hear the rest of the Barcelona adventure... Saturday actually was a really good day to be honest... which was well deserved after Friday night. First we all met for STARBUCKS!! I miss it soo much, and mostly because you can get it To Go. Places here just do not do that, even when you have food left over at a restaurant, they give you a dirty look if you ask for a box. Sooo anyways, after that much needed caffeine, we began our day. In the heart of Barcelona there is a place called Las Ramblas, and if you wanted to compare it to anything it would be like mixing Time Square with an open-air market.... not the best comparison but o well. So you ... read more

Awoken to the sound of Captain McFadden advising we were 1 hour from Bilbao it was now 8am Spanish time, 7am British and ships time. Disembarking from the Pride of Bilbao we headed stupidly to the centre of Town, to find the Guggenheim museum. Tom Tom was pretty on the ball but not quite a coconut. We were along side but parking was nowhere to be seen, putting this together with the Spanish drivers we deicide to abort the mission, Take the photo and head. We decided to head to Salamanca with a camp site in mind, arriving at the destination the campsite was no longer there. Campsite number two Dejavue. The sun was pounding in both getting a little on the frustrated side we pulled over regained that “Kiwi get up and go and ... read more

MOTOTOUR 2007 Day 7: Day trip: Mundaka to Bilbao and back Distance: 114 km (of 8,667 km total) Today we took the bike to Bilbao. Stopping at the next town after Mundaka, Berneo, we found an open café and had brunch: coffee + Basque-style tapas again. Zak who has an eye for these things, suspected the place to be a mafia den, which is totally plausible since the characters inside the café and those standing guard outside could really have been straight out of a godfather movie! Going to Bilbao, we took the mountain road. The landscape is very Pyrenees-like. Arriving in Bilbao we saw a very industrial city with a highly concentrated population. We found the Gugenheim museum, a futuristic, strangely-shaped building. Checked out exhibition of German painter, Anselm Kieffer: Dark! Very dark! But interesting ... read more

MOTOTOUR 2007 Day 6: Dune du Pilat to Mundaka Distance: 328 km (of 8,667 km total) We woke up in a thick fog Most of the dune had totally disappeared in the clouds. Realizing we wouldn't be able to see much, we decided there was no point in climbing up this morning either. There was nothing to do but pack and leave for Spain. No stop in beautiful Biarritz either, since the weather wasn't that great. Then we thought we'd stop by in San Sebastian, but the weather was still not that great. Upon entering Spain, the scenery changed: We saw tightly-packed apartments, laundry spilling out of balconies and windows of high-rise apartments against the backdrop of the beautiful Pyrenees mountains. We kept on going until the weather cleared up and we ended up in Gernika ... read more
