After waking cold, stiff and hungry we started the long drive to Bilbao. It would appear that Europeans don't adhere to same standard for road signs as we do in the US. If a street sign exists it is usually tucked behind a tree, right at the point of turning without warning or a good ten yards passed the turn so you can clearly see it once you start turning. Needless to say it took us a while to reach Bilbao. After circling the city a couple of times we found our way into the downtown core to stop at the main attraction in Bilbao, the Guggenheim museum. We found street parking in front of the building and proceeded to take a wrong turn and walk completely around the building to find the entrance. The ... read more

BILBAO So we leave France and scoot towards Spain. After 2 says of reasonable weather, Europe turns on us again. Under grey, gloomy skies we near the border. With no actual signs welcoming us to Spain, we look for telltale indications. Obviously the language on signs change from a mixture of Basque and French to a mixture of Basque and Spanish. More overtly is the appearance of seemingly endless dull rectangular apartment blocks with the washing hanging from the balconies, as well as interminable ugly industry in full view. a kind of Port Kembla meets Brooklyn. There is also the sudden emergence of tasteless graffitti as France disappears in the rear vision mirror. Lonely Planet describes Bilbao as a spirited city surrounded by hills in the midst of beautiful Basque countryside. We will have to take ... read more

Friday morning we had our third group excursion, and this time we took a short bus ride to the pueblo of Gernika, the historical capital of Pais Vasco. Gernika is renowned in Spain because it was bombed by Hitler in the 1930s, who was working in cahoots with Franco at the time during the Spanish Civil War. There is a famous painting by Picasso called "Guernica" that now sits in the Reina Sofia museum in Madrid that many Basque people would like to see brought to a Guernika or Bilbao art museum, but because of its size and weight, many don't think it should be moved - it's a big controversy in Spain!. While in Gernika, we visited the Casa de Juntas, or the government house, and saw the famous Arbol de Gernika, the oak tree ... read more

Well, the ferry trip is over at last! I couldn't sleep in the cabin, those three just insisted on doing aerobics all night so I crept out and managed to catch a catnap in the snackbar. One of the waiters was telling me about his uncles vineyard. He says they make the best wine in Espana from the grapes he grows. Apparently Espana is the Spanish way of saying Sapin. So I quite fancy a look at that, but first I had to go to the Guggenheim in Bilbao. Oh wow did I love that! I couldn't actually get inside as apparently they don't let animals in, cats, cows stuffed or otherwise. Though apparently if I was a cow of two halves I might just make it. This chap Damien who came up with this idea ... read more

Al Sant Jaume, ... read more

The visit to Andorra has produced devastating results. For the second time in less than a year, the quick change of altitude and consequent change of pressure have reduced my body to a heap of ruins. It must be something connected with the respiratory system and perhaps I should consult a doctor about it. But, that is, the two Andorran days turned into nightmare. A few hours after my arrival to La Vella I begun to feel unwell to the point to be forced first to visit a pharmacy and finally to total yield, accepting lodging in a 50 euros per night hotel to defend myself from the by then totally uncontrolled fever tremors. And, believe me, under normal circumstances I would have a foot cut off rather than paying 50 euros for a bed. At ... read more

We started classes at the University of Deusto yesterday. These classes are much earlier than the ones at USC! I'm not used to waking up so early every morning - that's going to be a big adjustment. We all get up around 7:30 to get to breakfast by 8 to have enough time to make the 30+ min trek to school for classes at 9 a.m., Monday-Thursday. Every morning for 3 hours, I have Spanish grammar, composition, and oral language classes. It's a lot of Spanish to sit through each morning, but I love my teacher - she makes learning interesting, and it's so nice to learn from a native speaker who knows how to teach non-native speakers. It's a refreshing change from many of my previous Spanish teachers. There are several different Spanish classes that ... read more

Today was our first group excursion out of the city. We hopped on a bus and two hours later, after driving up the very windy and tiny hilly roads, we arrived in the beautiful mountain town of Encartaciones, the western most town in the Basque country. It was incredibly isolated, but everything was so green and the air was so cold and crisp - it felt wonderful to be up there. They then took us on a guided tour of the Cuevas de Pozalagua, which is a huge old cave. I'm not usually fascinated by caves, but I think I could have stayed in this one for hours just gawking at how amazing it was. The whole thing was just one ginormous magestic room; I wish I had pictures to show, but we weren't allowed to ... read more

bGreetings from Bilbao./b I guess I arrived in the city nearly a day and a half ago, but the jetlag has been such an adjustment that I really can’t tell what day it feels like. My flight was fine; Alyson and I sat together and watched movies and tried to sleep. We then had a 5 hour layover in Germany, a quick 2 hour flight to Bilbao, and then a short bus ride from the airport to our dorm. My first thought of flying into Bilbao was that it seemed like a little mountain town, but after walking around the city, I realize it’s much bigger than I had previously thought. It’s a beautiful city though; everything is very green, even though the natives tell us this is not green, this is the dry season. I ... read more
