We took a train to the closest town to the castle where we could then get a taxi for the remaining few miles for 5000 SIT. It was raining for the first time, it wasn’t that fine rain that soaks you through but the heavy rain that soaks you more, and with having excellent weather for the previous two days and the report saying it was going to improve, I wore shorts and short sleeve shirt. I stood out nicely especially when I wore my England hat. While waiting for the taxi driver have an ice cream. The taxis driver waits while you visit this fascinating castle built into the side of a cliff. If you are wondering which castle we are talking about here it is not Ljubljana castle but Predjamkega Grad. Entry fee 1000 ... read more

As we let others stay in the room we waited until they were up and gone before getting up, still made it up for breakfast tho (see photo as evidence). The first night it was a Turk from Manchester and a Brit from London. The Turk did his naked exercises in the morning with lots of moans and grunts (no photo of this you just have to believe me, it wasn't pretty). Today we visited a castle. Ljubljana castle is situated on one side of the river up a hill (nice spot for a castle, may come across other good situations throughout our travels). Cost 1000 SIT for a walk up a tower. There was a restaurant and a monk selling wine. Not bad view tho. ... read more

There is just two of us this time, usually three, four or five, but others couldn't make it. When Roland ( the friend I'm on hols with) suggested Slovenia I had the thoughts of tanks on street corners and prety much a war zone. I was reluctant but you only live once and always get the mickey taken for never eaten an orange before ( which is not true, donuts yes). So lets get started with day 1. Cannot really remember what we did that day and the photos don't really say much. I presume we just made it to the airport, got a taxis to Ljubljana and then just wondered until we found our Hostel. No tanks so far.... read more

We spent the day at the hot springs in Slovenia. It was somewhat of a mix between a water park and a spa. This was so relaxing after all of the traveling we had been doing. I wish we could have seen more of Slovenia, but we just drove through the countryside and went to the hot springs. On our way back to Austria, we were stopped at the border(since Slovenia isn't part of the EU). The guards didn't want to let us go back into Austria because our rental car was not approved to leave the EU. We had no idea though. Anyway, after about a half hour of talking, they let us pass.... read more

These caves are interesting, but if time is short in Slovenia, I'd skip them unless you have a chance to hear a choir perform while visiting.... read more

I arrived there via a night train from Austria, found a private room, and then enjoyed perhaps the longest sleep of my life - about 15 hours. So all I remember of the city is that it was young, optimistic, and seemed to really love ice cream.... read more

So, the first entry... How my travels started... nothing too dramatic... At the end of September 1998 i was finishing my graduation thesis. And in Ljubljana met for a drink my best friend Adi. While drinking beer and watching people going by, he explained his idea to go traveling to Zanzibar... Zanzibar I asked??? Thats somewhere faaaaar away? Yep, Africa he replied... Well, i was interested to go with. But, I didn't want to go only to the beaches, i wanted to see the world. I wanted to see wild animals... yes, lets go then backpacking to Tanzania. A few days later we reserved ourselves flight tickets towards Dar Es Salaam. We got some medications and antimalarial drugs, and that was it... No particular planing. No experience. We just now, that we will end our trip ... read more
