After 4 really enjoyable days in Budapest it was time to move to our next to Lbuljana, stay overnight there, pick up a car the next morning and drive into to the Slovenian countryside to Bovec. Well fair to say things didnt start off too well. As it turned out we incorrectly assumed that the train would leave from the main station, Keleti the same one we arrived at 4 days earlier from Bratislava. This was not the case. Upon presenting our tickets we were told that the train to Slovenia left from another station across the other side of town. After a mild panic attack ( Glenn is so good in a crisis) we hailed a cab and made a mad dash across town with a cab dirver who insisted on pointnig out all ... read more

I took the train from Amsterdam to Brussels for my flight to Slovenia's capital Ljubljana(yoob-li-yana). When I arrived I went straight into town with my couchsurfing host and her friend for a drink. We sat along the river under a willow tree and I introduced myself to Slovenian beer. It was really scenic sitting on the water front as the sunset turned into the afterglow, and candlelight lined the river. The next day we took a roadtrip out to Slovenia's coastline. On the drive out there I noticed the abundance of trees and greenery. We went to a lookout near the town of Strunjan. It was great to see the ocean again. It was strange to look across the water and see Italy on the other side. Croatia can be seen across the water from ... read more

I have been listening, for nearly the last three hours, to Bob Dylan. It is because the free internet at my hostel is right next to the bar, and alternative scene in Ljubjlana means, aparently, Bob Dylan. Or the Barman's a nut. One or the other. But I have been uploading pictures. Some of Rome, and some of Slovenia to Flickr. Sadly, I ran out of upload bandwidth. Grrr... I should be more selective, I suppose. And I've edited previous entries, to include more photos. I will do this continually, as my patience increases. Slovenia is a lovely, amazing country. Full of surprises. For instance, it is no cheaper than Italy. I am saving money only because I am not entering museums, I am only walking and wandering. The Old City, centred around Ljubljana Grad ... read more

Finally a chance to update the blog. I'll start with today so you'll know we are safe and sound, back in the Slovenian capital. We arrived back to the city Friday evening and have had a chance to do the laundry and to dismantle the bikes into the suitcases one more time for the train trip to Croatia tomorrow morning. Today we had a leisurely start and then headed to the downtown core of Ljubjana with our great hostess as tour guide. The sun was bright, temperatures around 29C so all the Slovenes in the city were downtown walking and strolling in a very relaxed way. It's a city of lovely old buildings, outdoor terrasses and cafes by the hundreds along the river which flows through the middle of the city. We strolled through the open ... read more

Ah, the first, --and most ignored--, words of Italian I learnt in Italy. Actually, now I can say that I have truly rounded my knowledge of Italian Nouns. I have fifty or so for dining out, still my five medical words (does capella count?), and now I know about a hundred to do with religious icons. Round up of Italy: If I see another mediaval fresco of Madonna Col Bambino, I will scream. The Grotta Gigante at Trieste was fun: I spent the entire time entertaining (and being entertained by) a six year old girl who wouldn't shut up. I don't even know is she knew I didn't speak Italian. And she wouldn't've cared. Coffe in Italy isn't neccesarily good. Just because it is Italian, doesn't mean it was good. I had burnt coffee in ... read more

Without cheating, write down everything you know about Slovenia. Information such as "it's an 8 letter word beginning with s will not be accepted. What you have written would probably fit on the back of a postage stamp. If you gaze at a world map, Slovenia is roughly the same size as that postage stamp. While she is small, Slovenia punches way above her weight in terms of attractions. Now, pretend you are an artist, and without anything to copy you would like to paint a landscape. A lake would be nice, surround that lake with hills and in the distance some mountains sprinkled with snow. How about a castle perched on one of those hills and a steeple in the midst of a lakeside village. This might be overkill, but let's throw in an island ... read more

An interesting day of train travel with bikes. The trains are very bike friendly. Specially marked coaches have a compartment with 'meat hooks' on the ceiling from which you hang the front wheel of the bike. We were able to keep an eye on them through the glass doors. The trains were nearly empty but stops at many small towns to let small number of people on and off. The trains double as school busses for highschool kids - probably attending regionalized schools of various types. We had one 2 hour layover in San Candido which was very good because we had whizzed through it on the way to Italy the first time on the bike path. Turned out to be a charming town and we enjoyed a great cappucino and strudel in the sunshine in ... read more

Slovenia, the unknown jewel of Europe. Tucked away under Austria's imposing mountains, next to Italy's Venietian coastline and above Croatia's islands, relatively mysterious to most travellers or confused with similar sounding Slovakia. We got lots of 'Slovenia? where's that?' Yet we weren't the only Aussies to have discovered this little gem, and encountered as many similar accents to our own as walking around Earls 'kangaroo valley' Court in London. Our flight from Stansted was reasonably good for an easyjet flight. It took a little less than 2 hours to get to Brnik airport flying over snow capped peaks. The Austrian Alps are very close to Slovenia's Julian Alps and all much the same, huge dominating rocky mountains. You could think that the whole of Slovenia is one giant mountain range, infact a good deal of ... read more

Seeing Lib's blog posted the day after she got back from Oz reminded me that I am a little slow with my updates....So, last month 9 of us (Alison, new housemate Lisa, Nick, Jodie, Tessa, Kempy, Julie, and special guest from Oz en route to Dubai- Mark Stewien) declared an unofficial long weekend and headed to Slovenia. On arrival we realised we were not that well prepared - it actually gets quite cold there in May and we had packed only bathers and t-shirts; and there's lots of beautiful mountains to climb and long walks to go on - and (some of us) only had stilettos and thongs....but that didn't deter us from having a brilliant time. The capital, Ljubljana, is really pretty - sort of like a mini version of Prague. After a day ... read more

Slovenia After a good set of wrong roads and closed motorways we were on our way. We ended up taking a more “scenic” route but was very nice and got so see some really nice valleys and gorges. After a good drive we arrived in Slovenia and neither nick or I got a stamp in our passports what a rip!! But getting over that we arrived in Ljublijan an we txt Matejka the CouchSurfer we were going to be staying with. After receiving some rather incomprehensible directions we headed to the main train station to see if we could book a train for Mirja to get home the next day=( After a bit of a search of the Maptop we found the street and we were off, after about 1 min of driving we were ... read more
