Gardian of the city Slovenia
After a good set of wrong roads and closed motorways we were on our way. We ended up taking a more “scenic” route but was very nice and got so see some really nice valleys and gorges. After a good drive we arrived in Slovenia and neither nick or I got a stamp in our passports what a rip!! But getting over that we arrived in Ljublijan an we txt Matejka the CouchSurfer we were going to be staying with. After receiving some rather incomprehensible directions we headed to the main train station to see if we could book a train for Mirja to get home the next day=( After a bit of a search of the Maptop we found the street and we were off, after about 1 min of driving we were there lol, easy as.
Finding a decent parking inform of her apartment we met her out front. After meeting her friend we settled down for a few beers and generally chatted, Nick ended up going out with them all night! Got free drinks of some random guys as well haha, what a player=p
The next morning we meet up with Nick and Matejka in the
local antique markets and went for a nice walk around the city and the local park, even did some typical Nick and Mark Monkey type tree climbing. After a sad but quick goodbye(we were late for the train) to Mirja we headed off back to the markets to see if we could buy a guitar we has seen from the markets, which unfortunately had been closed up. So failing to get our string less guitar we headed up to a Slovenian lake(about 1.5 hours away) for a swim and a Fire. So after a hectically long drive (or so it seemed) and few unwelcome road tolls we arrived in the lake are which was really beautiful, we did a bit of a loop around the lake and found a good place to park the van and head off for a swim. It turns out (we kind of knew already) that it was a lake feed but an ice melt river!!! So clad in boardies and a jumper we headed down to the lake too quite a few odd looks, after crossing an ice cold mini river crossing in which our toes almost froze off we readied ourselves for the upcoming
pain(vid attached) It wasn’t quite as bad as we were expecting but still icy!
So after our swim to the incredulous gases of a passing family or canoer’s we headed off back to the van to find a spot for our camp fire. We found a great spot infront of the river unfortunately we were chased away by a local so we put out the amazing fire I had just started and moved somewhere else. We had a great diner of fire baked potatoe, onions and garlic. Not to mention the failed garlic bread. Unfortunately our host had work the next day so we had to head back into the city but it was a great diner and I really enjoyed having a fire again.
We decided to stay another day as they were having a may festival/concert thing at the top of the hill. So we spend pretty much all day just relaxing and recharging the vans batteries, Our host also taught is a local card game with special cards! It was so complicated it was insane, but I think we did mange to play a whole round by the end of it without messing up. That evening after
a great diner from Matejka one of her friend came round and we started in to the alcohol, including the really cheap beer(pivo) we bought which tasted worst than I imagine cat piss would!! And the cheap and vodka which is no better than Kristov(terrible alc in NZ) the saving grace was the Cockta(coke type stuff) which made the rum drinkable. Anyway we were taught the local type of dance and serenaded with Matejka’s belly dancing (she teaches!)
So after a few drink we started our merry way up the hill towards the party, saying hello in lots of languages to the random’s we were passing. When we arrived it was a lot bigger than I was expecting there were heaps of people! We met a few more of there friends had a few more local drinks they had including a plum schnapps type thing which was quite nice but so so strong! We ended up dancing close the front of the stage trying to sing along to the folk type music they were playing. In all it was a crack up night with a really long walk home as we kind of missed out path. Needles to say we
felt a little shocking in the morning but after a few hours of recovery we were off on our way to Austria.
