As always, we started the day out with breakfast at the hotel. After breakfast we boarded the bus, bound for various sites in the Alpine region. Lorie wasn’t feeling well, so she stayed in Bled. Our first stop was Skofja Loka, Slovenia’s oldest city. We strolled along 800 year old streets, layered with cobblestones. After reaching the highest point in the city, we toured the museum and castle. Portions of the castles have been restored through the years, most notably by Joze Plecknik, Slovenia’s most important Architect. We continued our tour by stopping at the Elan Factory outlet. We shopped briefly then continued on to Bohinj. We had a late, light lunch at Restavracija Zlatovcica (the size of our group apparently overwhelmed the very lightly staffed restaurant). After lunch, we strolled around Lake Bohinj - Slovenia’s ... read more

We had a relaxing day in Bled today - no bus trips! After breakfast and a morning of blogging, our day began with hiking around the lake and up to St. Martin’s Church. After searching out the path to the “Grad” or Castle, we hiked up the windy, steep path (about 1K). Wildflowers were blooming all along the trail. Castle Bled is the oldest castle in Slovenia. Once we got to the castle, we found that the castle interior and museum were closed but that the printing room and wine cellar were open. The printing room housed a replica of the Guttenberg Press. We enjoyed lunch on the patio with Andrea and John, over looking Lake Bled. The view from the castle is really wonderful. After lunch, Kim enjoyed filling and corking her first bottle of ... read more

“Dober dan!” Hello! After having breakfast at Hotel Bled, we headed out for the day. The tour today includes a trip into the Kras Region, near the Italian border, a little east of the area where we toured yesterday. This region of Slovenia is the World’s original “karst” area and is where the term karrst topography originated. The area is riddled with limestone outcroppings and sinkholes and an extensive underground lake and cavern system. The fist stop was in Lipica. Founded in 1580, this is the site of the original stud-farm for Lippazan stallions. A classical riding school was founded after WWII. Our tour of the Farm took us through the training area and stables. We saw where the mares are stabled, yearlings that still had their dark coats, and the older Stallions that were completely ... read more

The day began with breakfast at the hotel. Then, we headed on a 3 hour bus ride for the Slovenia Coast. We met our tour guide for the week, Jon. We headed south for Piran, a beautiful fishing village and vacation destination. The small village hosts 20 Catholic churches, dedicated to various saints. Piran was home to the composer, Guiseppe Tartini, whose statues welcomed us in Piran Square. We walked up small winding alleys, past hanging houses to see the view from the prominent Church of St. George. The original church building was constructed in the 3rd century. In the 14th century, the building was dedicated to St. George for saving a ship from a storm. The current church building was constructed in the 17th century. The church was renovated recently and the interior restored to ... read more

After a long day of travel, we were happy to arrive at our hotel in Bled. From the plane, we had a sneak peak of the Alps and of Venice. On the drive from Venice to Bled, we enjoyed seeing family vineyards and the Italian countryside. From the room at Hotel Park, we have a beautiful view of Lake Bled. Directly across the lake, atop the hill is Castel Bled. A beautiful old church sits on an island in the middle of the lake. With little sleep but lots of energy, we are off and anxious do a little exploring. ... read more

Ladies and gents, ponovno pozdravljeni v oddaji Spet ne doma. Tokrat vas bomo popeljali nekam, kamor Ivina noga še ni stopila, nekam, kamor je Juri Muri odšel e zavnaj, nekam tja dol v A-A- uh? Avstralijo? - Afriko! Natančneje v Ugando, v Kabale, kjer domuje organizacija Edirisa (www.edirisa.org). Ta bo naslednje tri tedne moja razširjena druina.

It happens every year. In the last half of November all the old friends keep in touch and decide where to spend New Year's day. The tradition of going somewhere abroad has been going on for a while now and it all started in 1999 when we went to Prague. This year was doomed by indecision: someone wanted to go back to Spain, after the great experience of last year in Madrid. Others were opting for somewhere closer, since everybody was lacking time and I was the only one on a long vacation. Umberto had this brilliant idea: Ljubljana, the capital of neighbor Slovenia. Unfortunately only three of us made it there: myself, Umberto (Umbe) and omnipresent Claudio (Gillo). Getting there from Venice is really a piece of cake: about two and a half hours driving. ... read more

In pretty much the same way as patterns started developing to my holidaying trends, even my annual week-long ski breaks fell into a similar mode, and in time-honoured tradition of going on one pricey ski break, followed by a budget option, January 2008 was the turn of the budget ski trip, and the location for it was the picturesque ski resort of north-western Slovenia, Kranjska Gora. Nestled in the midst of the Julian Alps and a stone's throw from both the Italian and Austrian borders, this ski town had been blighted by the lack of reliable snowfall in 2007, which made skiing there the following season seem like myself and snowboarding nephew were taking a gamble of sorts regarding the snow record. Well, the resort itself was pretty enough even without a healthy fall of fresh ... read more

We decided to celebrate our final days in London by going on 'Our last Trip' to Ljubljana, Slovenia. It had taken us about three months to get our tongue around the pronunciation of the word and had no clue on what to expect!! Apart from a war with Yugoslavia in the early 90's there was not alot we did know about the place! In actual fact our Europe guide book had all of three pages on Slovenia which does not necessarily give the sense that there is a lot happening!!! After arriving mid afternoon we decided to go for a walk to the city centre. The city centre was spectacular with its Christmas decorations and snow falling! The decoration consisted of all the planets, comets, the sun, the moon, stars and angels hanging over the streets, ... read more

This morning was possibly our earliest start yet in our travels, we even made time for breakfast. We caught the bus to Postojna pretty easily and the journey took us approximately an hour. We knew that the cave tours didn't begin until ten in the morning, however the bus timetable really didn't mesh with the cave timetable in any way shape or form. We jumped off the bus at the station which is in the middle of the town, it felt like a ghost town. It was ten to nine in the morning but there was very little movement anywhere. We had a glance around the square and easily found a sign directing us to the caves. It took little over five minutes to get to the main entrance to the caves and then we found ... read more
