Less than an hour from Lake Bled is a larger, more stunning, alpine lake situated in Slovenia's largest national park, Triglav,Lake Bohinj. The lake is 523 meters above sea level and well developed winter ski resort. With over 40 kilometers of ski trails, starting at 1800 meters it is a challenge for any level. We were there in late summer, taking the cable car to 1,540 meters that afforded a magnificent view over the valley, lake Bohinj, and in the distance 9,000 plus feet Mt. Triglov. Solitude envelops the lake, partly due to a policy of not allowing motor-craft. Sparsely visited this is a treasure to be enjoyed by all those who value the outdoors. While there, also visit Gostilna Rupa, in my opinion one of the finest roadside guest houses/restaurants in Slovenia.... read more

June 2003 The cheap airlines hadn’t quite made it to town at this point, so getting there was a bit more of a challenge on a budget. As a well read guide book sums it up, “Ljubjlana is just a house and Slovenia a village”. It’s not a hard country to negotiate your way around, so how hard could it be to get there from Italy on the train? The answer unless you are the daily express from Venice is more difficult than you would think, as there is a tiresome detour via Trieste. We spent a hot stopover night in Venice - long enough to see the sights, a few canals, get bitten by the odd mossie and buy a train ticket. Ljubjlana is far from the quagmire of troubles sometimes associated with the former ... read more

We left Innsbruck and the rain, to retreat back to Slovenia, where the weather had been great when we passed through it, and it couldn’t be any worse than Innsbruck, could it? Famous last words - over the next 4 days we had some sunny days, but the wettest, stormiest evenings and nights either of us have ever spent in a tent. So much so, that on the 3rd night, the rain was so bad that our tent was actually afloat, with all the water running down the mountainside into the campsite. Our gear in the porch was all completely soaked, and we had a great time the next day, unpacking all our gear and drying and cleaning all our clothes - joy. The campsite was also not the best we have ever stayed in - ... read more

The friendly local Slovenian guy decided to take us under his wing at the bus stop near the Italian border, he too was waiting for the elusive white minibus that was supposed to come and whisk us across the border. His English was limited, but he tried to communicate with a smile and determination ... and we managed to convey that we were trying to get across the border too, and travelling on to Lake Bled. Finally the minibus came and we piled on board, and crossed over into Slovenia. When we got to what we suspected was the Nova Gorica train station (although it was tiny and unnamed) he held us back indicating that our destination lay further on ahead. The bus continued on and we arrived at the bus station and he smiled triumphantly ... read more

(We have added some pictures to a few previous entries. Hopefully we will get caught up tonight or tomorrow.) We left Salzburg yesterday and got our train to Ljubljana, Slovenia. It was only a 4 hr train ride, which seemed much shorter than the one we took from Zurich. I must admit, I really miss the Swiss trains. In Switzerland, all the trains were spotless and extremely punctual. You get spoiled by that. It was a nice enough train and at least there was a window that opened. A really nice couple from the States (who are currently living in Prague) sat with us for part of the journey. When we were planning the trip, many questioned why we were going to Slovenia. Both of us have really enjoyed it. Things here are cheap, everyone is ... read more

We left from the Rome Termini on Sat the 26th, around 5pm ( after arriving there at 10am but having to wait in three different lines to get our tickets). We had to switch trains twice, once in Bologna, and once in Vallach. On one of the trains we started talking this Italian guy who is studying to be a stage actor in Venice. He was very sweet, and friendly and we talked for a long time about various random things. Our conversation was conducted half in English and half in Spanish, it was quite fun. He got off in Venice to see his girlfriend who was performing in a play there. It is so pleasant to meet all these nice people!! He was the only high point on the train ride. It was so hot, ... read more

took bus from ljublinana, tried to find hostel spent as long as possible trying to find the hostel in a really small town with a total of about 10 hostels and 100 houses. hostel is plush and solvenian staff are strangely sarcastic.. a reminder of home In the dorm of 8ish there were a group of university, sloan type rah girls, who stayed up late into the night contiously explaning the rules of trumps to one member, unsurprisingly we met up with another lone traveller in the dorm, who empathised with our pain. We had a drink at the "George Best bar," down the road from our hostel, admiring the beautiful decor of George best frescos, football shirt, rugby shirts and photos of Mohamed ali, in short anything remotely connected with England or USA in fact ... read more

Slovenians suffer from a debilitating swine obsession. Every meal is laced with suspicious mushroom-pink luncheon meat. Pigs trottors, snouts & floor sweepings fashioned into a giant sausage & polished to a reflective sheen. Absolutely disgusting! We've resorted to feasting on imported South Australian canned tuna, corn chips & nutella instead. Us in Sovenia = the picture of health. On the flip side our budget is finally wearing a smile. So too are our heads as we marvel at the spine tingling scenery of the Julian Alps. We've never seen so many Christmas trees in the one place. Not to mention countless hidden gorges of aquamarine waterfalls & teal pools where stray shafts of sun catch frollicking fish in their spotlights. We climbed to the Vršic pass along the Russian Road from Kranjška Gora, Slovenia's highest mountain ... read more

After a good night sleep and some home cooking we decided to head straight off to Lake Bled as we were craving something different from the cities. We arrived at the station and was collected along with an Aussie couple by our hostel and give the guide tour almost. We also breath taking views of the Alps and got very excited about our day in the Lake. We got to our hostel had a drink and partially ran to the Lake. It was breathtakingly beautiful. All the trees are impossibly green and the water was a perfect shade of blue. We started a walk around the Lake, but as we got exactly half way the heavens opened and me and Stu got drenched! So after find the cash point game we headed to the bus stop ... read more
