We woke up brriiiight and early today.. We had a lot on our list to get done! But first, I needed my coffee!! I went to a cute cafe and asked for a mocha. They looked confused. I told them esspreso+ chocolate and milk = mocha. The put two shots of espresso in my cup and added their "hot chocolate" which was actually melted chocolate bars with milk. Let me tell you, that was the BEST, thickest mocha I have had in my life. We left the city even before we got to explore it.. which was hard but we were saving the city for the next day. So we got on the bus number 1, took it to the end, got on bus number 8, took it to the end, and got off and walked ... read more

Wednesday was a Czech holiday, so my friend Mark and I planned a last minute trip to Slovenia and Croatia! We planned a round trip ticket from Prague to Slovenia via train (11 hrs) and decided when we got to Ljubljana we'd buy round trip tickets from Slovenia to Zagreb, Croatia... It was an interesting trip to say the least! Our train left Wednesday morning at 7:30am, so we left the Kolej at around 6:45. The trams were slow so we barely made our train... off to a great start! Our connecting train was in Salsburg, Austria. We got off the train there for a bit to rest our legs after six hours on the train! Salsburg is absolutely beautiful. It has the nicest scenery that I have ever seen... I almost wish I went there ... read more

My next destination was another couchsurfer in another tiny village, Hodos, Slovenia. Their names are Ivo and Megy. I had emailed Ivo and asked for their address and he told me ‘7’. I figured there was a bit of a language gap and he didn’t understand my request. So I emailed him again and he assured me that his address was 7, Hodos. He was right! The town was so small that they didn’t use street numbers. They just gave each address in the village it’s own number. I think the biggest address I saw in my three days there was 64. Ivo and Megy were originally from the city. They each had been divorced and met each other online. They fell in love and moved to Hodos. Again I was blown away by the generosity ... read more

We left Croatia for at the beginning of October, and drove north toward Slovenia. Our first stop in Slovenia was The Skocjan Caves. These caves are a Unesco World Heritage Site and boast the world's largest subterranean canyon, replete with a rushing river (seen from hundreds of feet above) and waterfalls, and filled with stalagmites and stalagtites of strange and wonderous shapes and sizes. These caves are beautiful, spectacular, and breathtaking. I hated every moment I was in them. The first section was the worst. A tunnel. I hate tunnels. Knowing that I have terrible claustrophobia, Ari very nicely held my hand for this part--we were assured that the first tunnel was the only truly enclosed section--but I was still in tears by the time I reached the end. This was right up there with ... read more

(Excerpts from my book OUR SUMMER IN SLOVENIA, Amazon.com) As I have noted before, a major factor in Elysee and I deciding to spend a summer in Slovenia, is it being excellently situated to enable side trips to other countries. It is possible to easily drive from Bled to Budapest in six or seven hours. In our case, being in no hurry, we took several days stopping overnight at Celje, Slovenia, visiting Maribor, Slovenia's second largest city (110 thousand) and then stopping overnight again in the Lake Balaton region of Hungary. From there we drove on into Budapest. The following day we met up with our friends from Florida, Char and Al Love, for several days of adventure. First things first. We did not begin with the intention of staying in Celje. But, as is our ... read more

Monday 14th September Blobbing in Bled The weather has turned to custard overnight and after the thunderstorm had passed through last night it had rained a fair amount and it was still raining lightly this morning. It was just as well that we did our walk around Lake Bled and drive to Lake Bohanij yesterday while it was at least dry. The guy who showed us our apartment on Saturday had said that it was predicted to be only 10C today and he was not far out.A quick look at the day encouraged us to stay in bed and watch TV.Of the places we have stayed in Eastern Europe this apartment has the best selection of cable channels in English to watch. Some places we have stayed there have been absolutely nothing in English available and we ... read more

We had checked the weather forecast for Bled last night before we went to bed and it was supposed to rain all day today but we have woken to just an overcast sky and we can still see the Julian Alps that surround the town of Bled.So perhaps the weatherman is going to be wrong again. However we decided not to chance it and got up for a relatively early breakfast so that we could walk around the lake before the expected rain.We think it will probably take us about 2 hours with stops for photos. For the first time in weeks we are putting on our sneakers as we are not sure how well formed the path around the lake edge is and we are both tired of getting small stones in our sandals and ... read more

The day has dawned overcast but the prospect for the day is improving weather as we cross the border into Slovenia. Gretchens wasp sting on her elbow from last night has made her arm swell up considerably and from hereon she will be nicknamed "Arnie" after the Governor of California as she could match him for the circumference of her arm at the moment. We had some concerns that we might not have hot water this morning as last night there didn't appear to be any coming through the tap no matter how long we left it running for and neither of us wanted a cold shower. However something magical happened in the night and there was plenty of hot water for showering. To get onto the island of Krk we had driven across a 1.4km bridge ... read more

A BLOG BY BRETTO So after a very long and drunken expedition of Croatia and Bosnia we set sail for Slovinia on the whim of a drunken memory of a recommendation from a guy in Dubrovnik (and Kirra, Lauren and Amy)! Through the border we go with the girls perving on the 'hot' customs guy and choruses of "hey jude", changed to "hey norm" being screeched throughout the lush Slovenian countryside. What more could a man ask for i hear you say? Well once you get to Bled you will understand! you get PEACE!!!! QUIET!!!! MAGNIFICENT SCENERY!!! AND did i mention "PEACE"!!!! The change from Croatia was dramatic - from 23 degrees one day to 14 the next, and straight from arid limestone mountains to lush green rolling hills and quaint colourful cottages. Because it ... read more
