We went to Bled on 17th May. The main attraction in Bled is the picturesque Lake Bled, the Bled Castle overseeing the lake, and the Bled island in the middle of the lake. The Bled Castle has been around for 1000 years, believe or not, recently they just celebrated their 1000th anniversary. Bled is about 1 hour and 20 min away by bus from Ljubljana. Upon arrival, we saw the fijakers by the lakeside (a fijaker is a boat man who will take you across the lake to the small island) and asked the price. It is 10 Euro per person, so we sat down on his boat and waited for him to start, but he said wait for 5 min. After 20 min has gone by, we asked him again when he will start, he ... read more

Bled... sounds vaguely forbidding and things looked a little dark at first. Took a very early train to the nearest station, which is only 4km away from the lake, and my guidbook just said to "take one of the frequent buses" for the last leg. This was a cheap but unfortunately impossible plan, as there were no commuter buses, least not on a Sunday in April. After looking around for said buses we decided to just split a cab with two Aussies who also wanted to get to the lake. We arrived... it was a little grey and a little cold, not too many people were out and about (they were all in church I guess) and we were lacking strength/motivation, so settled down for some coffee. The people next to us ordered cake and that ... read more

The lead up to Christmas in Australia is usually an endless few months of catching up with friends, shopping, Christmas parties, sun, the beach and the huge build-up to the relaxed weeks in the sun that the proceed the festivities. On the other side of the world with only a small group of friends, no family and the country plunging further and further into the depths of a drab, grey Winter it is no surprise that the lead up to Christmas this year did not really feel much like Christmas. We decided that if we were going to have a northern hemisphere Christmas we might as well make the most of it and ensure it was a white one. We had been trying for months to organise a trip to Lapland but in the end gave ... read more

First, thanks for everyone who's commented on the website, I only just realized how I could read your contributions - its nice to hear from you all! After Trogir we headed north up the coast of Croatia and stopped on an island called Vir, planning to stop just for a night. But then Bad news - a scratch on Grace's leg got infected, so we went to the pharmacy, who called the doctor and told us to see her, who gave us a prescription after hanging about for two hours, so back to the pharmacy, and then we had to stay another night to visit the doctor again. Lot of hanging about in a, to be blunt, craphole... it's like the wild west, full of Hungarians building horrible holiday homes so it all looks like a ... read more

The bus is the best way to get to Bled apparently unless you have plenty of time then go by train. Not sure how that works but we got on the bus. I think costing 1000 SIT as everything seems to. It took between 1 and 2 hours to get there and when we arrived we headed straight to our apartment to dump our bags. We had an apartment for five as we like space, or some mates failed to come. This time we couldn’t allow others to share, as it wasn’t a hostel. The girl on reception at the sister hotel was hot, a definite 11/11 (new scale). We was going to stay in Bled for 5 days and that would be the end of our pre-booked accommodation, after that we need to book fast ... read more
