We are back in Bled, having walked the Juliana Trail.
The total ascent is equivalent to more than climbing Mt Everest. And as we are back where we commenced the descent is the same. There’s much debate about which is more difficult but rest assured there are difficult uphill sections and difficult downhill sections on this trail but they are rewarded with spectacular views and with scenic vistas which have been quite breathtaking. The figures and statistics are intriguing. We regularly walk more than 40000 steps which on the flat would translate to about 30 km but on no day did we walk nearly that far. The weather was too hot today as the temperature rose above 30 degrees and the heat radiating from the roads made it uncomfortable. Anyway it’s now ancient history and we start to prepare for our next walks in Greece.
The gostina last night tricked me. No section was open for meals and we had difficulty finding anything open until the kiosk man who sold us take away Radlers told us of a place 10 minutes or so away. It turned out well. We had our first hamburgers (from a Tex/Mex, pizza, burger selection)
but they were very good. Very old building served as the kitchen but the offerings were modern and surprisingly good. The accomodation made up for lack of evening meal with quite a sumptuous breakfast but one that to our surprise (but not delight) did not have cereal of any description or yogurt! Eggs, meat, cheese, fruit, croissants, breads but no cereal!
Then we walked. Through the fields, small towns, old towns, to the cafe, along the river, through the camp ground, on the road (for too long) and back to Bled. The pictures should do the talking. Hope they did there’s a few there.
Since arriving I’ve had almost 2 litres of fluids because it’s hot, I was thirsty, maybe a little dehydrated and light headed and because I enjoy the taste. Even Julie has had a litre which is a good start for her. Managed to get a 6 pack at the supermarket and to put them in an ice bucket so the results are well worth the effort. The Juliana Trail provides stamping stations around the trail at various strategically important points but they are never inked and really don’t work well. I’m thinking if Radler
gave bonus points at the stations I reckon walkers would carry their own ink! I don’t think I’ve ever seen any drink more ubiquitous than Radlers. Sure they come in several guises but they are everywhere. It’s a type of beer but only 2% in strength but I’d say it was more common than beer. It’s certainly more common coke or 7-Up and probably more common than coffee. But it has been good to us.
We head to Llubjiana tomorrow where again it will be hot but we should be able to work around that not walk around in it! We have a couple of tourist days there before heading off to Athens. We are staying in the same place I stayed in last year which will be good as I’m familiar with the area and what the area has to offer. So the blog will continue in some form. Stay tuned and see what happens.
Caio from the Juliana Trail and caio for now.
