Touched down at the Airport, cleared immigrations and collected baggage in a 15-minute period. Flight was full so there was a small crowd gathering near the luggage belts. No problems with baggages though, prompt and efficient. Asked the money changer for recommendations for getting to Bratislava and she commented that it would be good to take the bus instead, a sentiment echoed by the tourist information counter (they speak English). So off we went just outside of the terminal and waited for the 11.30 PostBus service which runs a daily roundtrip from Vienna to Bratislava Bus Station. Bus arrived punctually. Indeed, throughout the wait, I was mildly impressed by the raw and easy efficiency of the bus system which arrived nary a minute later than the specified times on the rectangular display above the stand. So I left Nottingham on a RyanAir flight to Bratislava. I had exhausted myself through nerves, but couldn't sleep on the plane. I sat next to this really cute little girl, but I couldn't understand a word she said. There were really low clouds, but once the plane got above them the stars and moon were beautiful. Looking down, I could see the lights from the ground below reflecting on the clouds. Then they turned on the cabin lights and ruined it all. Once in Bratislava, customs was really quick - they looked at my passport and waved me through. None of the standing around that we had done when we got to Heathrow. So I found my backpack, withdrew some cash and went looking for the bus. I couldn't find it. After about 10 minutes ... read more

Hi team Hope everyone back home is going well. I am fine thanks for asking. Me and Cat are now in Bratislava which is a lot better then what I was expecting. We have some time to fill in before Paris so though we would visit Slovakia. When we got here the weather was really nice (a sweltering 11 outside). Had a walk around the city which is really old and not touristy at all. Visited the castle which has an awesome view of the city. On every street there is a kebab stand. Think that I will turn into a kebab if I have another one. Can't help myself because they are so tasty. It is really relaxed here and a good change from central Europe. Last time I wrote we were on out way ... read more

It's been awhile since I have made a post. Honestly it's a combination of busyness, laziness, and a camera that ran out of batteries. No worries though, I'll catch all of you up right-quick now. I've been in Bratislava for two weeks to the day working on my final project. I've been following around a man named Marek Hojsik who is an expert on the subject I'm working on, and meeting many interesting people, and reading through a lot of information. However, that's the more mundane stuff that's not very exciting for you to hear about I'm sure. On Monday (Nov. 19) Marek and I took a train to Eastern Slovakia, to a city called Presov. That is officially the furthest east I have ever been, so close to the Ukraine that I was considering crossing ... read more

I finished work on Friday at the airport and decided to go to the bus station on the way home from work. I had thought about going to Budapest but there were no tickets left. There WERE however, tickets left for Saturday, but the bus only went as far as Bratislava, but I bought them anyhow. My round-trip bus ticket was only 430krowns which is about 22dollars...so what a deal, right? I can't even fill my gas tank at home for $22. So I packed my Vodafone backpack and went to bed because my bus left the Florenc bus station at 6AM. When I say "packed" my backpack, I mean I filled it with food. I decided to see if I could do the entire day trip for under 600 krowns. Which left me with about ... read more

When you're away it's always interesting to see what from home makes the local news where you are. Last night while sitting around at the monkey replica watching the first bit of TV that I've seen for a few days there was a news story from Sydney, the Burmese democracy protest. There was also a news story on the little bit of neo-nazi civil unrest in Prague. But back to the monkey replica that I found to take in a bit of live music last night, the Jazz-Cafe, put a .sk on the end of that and you have their website. So it's not quite the monkey, half of it is above ground for a start and the bar is somewhat less stocked then Jad's, oh and there was no ever friendly door bitch!! but the ... read more

Our stay was brief, and we will be honest with you, there wasn't that much to see!! That doesn't include the mess we got into (which wasn't our fault) over where we were staying. Having booked our hostel the night before we arrived to find them fully booked having not being told by the booking sight so we had to slum it round the corner. All they seem to do here is eat and drink so as it was cold, dark and snowing, yes snowing, we sat, we ate and we drank. First in a rather nice coffee bar and then in a ram packed pub where I had pork mixture (a little dodgy but it tasted good!) It was a really good pub so we got back late and had to contend with snorring of ... read more

Another day, another country as they say in the classics and with Mel on her way back home to France today as well, it was an early morning excursion to Prague airport. Having managed to make the Sky Europe flight cut off by a matter of minutes it was off to Bratislava. You see Sky Europe is like Jetstar in that if you are not checked in 40 minutes before your flight then don't bother flying Sky Europe. The only remaining thought going through my mind was that I hope they weren't counting on my airfare for their maintenance budget, since at 299Chk (remember 1AUD = 17Chk) it wasn't much of a contribution. The plane was a nice new Boeing 767-700 not yet out of warranty, so all was looking good. The arrival was all trouble ... read more

Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. The appearance, meh not so good... it appeared more communist looking than any other city we have visited with almost every apartment building looking the same as each other with a very flat and square appearance. On our first night here being Saturday, we headed out to find a good place to have some drinks. We followed some locals we met to a bar named Charlie's. Here the bouncers charged me and Hawk triple the cover charge and by the end of the night after numerous drinks the bouncers (I beleive it was the bouncers) stole some money and my camera as I left the club. Unfortunately, Hawk had disappeared earlier as he is known for so I made my way back to the hostel by way of a taxi, a ... read more
