Currently I am sitting at a hostel in Vienna which is surprisingly very nice and clean. But, before arriving in Vienna myself and 5 of my comrades ventured slightly east to the city of Bratislava in Slovakia. The 5 hour train ride from Prague to Bratislava was priceless. Just sitting back and enjoying the extensive green countryside and small cottage villages over a beer with 5 friends was a memorable time. When we arrived in the city it did seem a little less sanitary than we have been experiencing in Prague but we soon found that it was just a less desirable area of town. When we arrived at our Hostel (btw this city is where the recent horror movie Hostel took place, kinda intense) we immediately checked in and hustled downtown since we were only ... read more

1993. Czechoslovakia is broken neatly in 2. Divide the country and the word roughly in half. The second half, Slovakia, is generally regarded as the little impoverished brother of big bro 1st half. Sounded like a good enough reason to us for a few, in fact 4 days. What do you do for 4 days in country you don't know a great deal about? HEAD FOR THE HILLS MA!!! We found a room in the midst of a bunch of national parks, all for the princely sum of 15 euro per night. Slovakia is bargain Europe. The national park closest to us is known as Slovensky Raj. This translates to Slovakian Paradise. I wasn't aware paradise would be so full of Polish tourists. In fact my ingnorance led me to think we'd be the only non-Slovakians ... read more

First impressions on entering Slovakia was that we had landed in a giant cereal bowl, with seemingly endless fields of corn and wheat on the horizon - a bit like a scene out of ‘Honey I shrunk the kids!’ Our frustrating discovery that a symbol of a tent on a map does not mean there is actually a camping ground in the vicinity happily led to us spending some very comfortable and inexpensive nights in pensions (guest houses with self catering facilities). Camping does not seem to necessarily translate and sometimes can refer to private grounds with little chalets on them (all occupied). Surburban towns provided free entertainment in the form of tinny pop music(followed by very serious sounding sermons) via loudspeakers which were dotted about, probably used in the past for broadcasting Soviet propaganda, these ... read more

On our way between Budapest and Vienna, we stopped for a night in Bratislava, Slovakia. Bratislava was not necessarily at the top of our list of must-see destinations, but we figured since it was so convenient (on the way from Budapest and only an hour from Vienna), we’d stop and take a look around. We had read in the guidebook that outside of the small old town area the city was kind of grim, and we were kind of bracing ourselves for an unpleasant trip from the train station to the hostel. It wasn't really at all like we were led to believe, and some of the neighborhoods we walked around in were very pleasant and nice. We got on the bus at the train station to go to our hostel, but hadn't realized that ... read more
