Today was an amazing fun filled day. It started off when the four Ginger Monkey workers(Martin the Slovak, Jess the Brit Manager of Ginger Monkey who is with Martin, Troy and Bevan the Kiwi's) and I piled into a car and headed an hour away to a place we can go on a nice seanic rafting ride. The driving trip was fun going fast on a winding Slovak road. Where we were rafting was on a river that was right between Slovakia and Poland. We suited up in a life jacket, helmet and paddle grabbed the raft and was off. The guide only spoke Slovak so it was nice having Martin with us to translate. He told us about the mountains and stories behind them. There were a few parts that were rough but nothing to ... read more

I don't really remember the day part of day expect Troy from New Zealand who works at the hostel asked if I wanted to go and have some Golash. It was just up the road from the hostel at this little hut, you have to knock on the window and the man opens it you tell him you want Golash. He does not really have anything else there expect frozen pizza that he puts in the microwave. It was very good and filling and got to know Troy, who was only working at the hostel for a few weeks while the owner (Jimbo) was away on holidays. For the evening we all went to the pizzaria and ate num num pizza and some beers, we came back to the hostel to chill and watch movies. ... read more

I woke up at the right time and caught my train to Zdiar, well I caught the train to Poprad then I would need to take the bus to Zdiar. I first had to take a train to Bratislava, my Eurail pass does not work in Slovakia so I was allowed to sit in first class until we got to the Slovakian boarder then I had to move to second which was very full so I just sat on the floor in between carts since it was only about half an hour. My connecting train to Bratislava was late thank goodness since my train was very late getting in and I was very happy that I did not have to wait another 2 hours to catch the next train. This train was very full as well ... read more

I hadn't heard many good things about Slovakia. Literally every person I know who went inter-railing said the same thing: avoid Bratislava at all costs. Then the Hungarians I met in Budapest argued it isn't even a country just a rebellious Hungarian province. On the other hand I'd heard the scenery in some areas was amazing so I figured I'd give the country a chance. Things did not get off to a good start. Trains are generally late in Eastern Europe but my train from Budapest was particularly bad and I had a connection to catch. I missed two trains to Poprad and ended up arriving at a train station somewhere in Eastern Slovakia. The word bleak does not even begin to cover it. I'll admit no train station at night is a pleasant place (except ... read more

After finishing my class in Poland, I headed back to Slovakia. Sylvia and her family came to Lublin to pick me up. After one day back in Roznava, Sylvia and I headed to Presov, Slovakia so I could attend a research conference on religious geography in Europe. The conference went well and on the third day, we had a small group tour of some of the most important religious architecture in Northeast Slovakia. This region has a group of small wooden churches that were placed on the UNESCO World Hertiage List last summer while I was here. These churches are unique in the world for their architecture, construction, and in a few cases, for the specific denomination that uses them. The Slovak Greek Catholic Church is a very small Eastern Rite Catholic Church that exists in ... read more

I traveled by train to Zakopane from Krakow, a mere 3 1/2 hours to go 120 km. Let me know if you cannot read this blog entry because I am using a Slovak keyboard and I have to use some letters in the wrong locations. I arrived in Zakopane in the Tatras region of the Polish side of the Tatra Mountains. Lonely Planet says that no one stays in hotels because there are some many private rooms available - they will meet you as the train arrives. And they did meet us, but walked right by me. I approached a group of these people advertising private rooms by holding signs. I asked if they have any rooms. "Tonight?" "Of course, tonight" was my reply. "No we have no rooms available" Confused I walked away and walked ... read more

Slovak Starry Nights - a weekend in the High Tatras mountains So this weekend I went on an impromptu trip with a group of friends to Zdiar, Slovakia, a quaint village nestled among the stunning High Tatras mountains near the border of Poland and Slovakia. Three of the seven of us, incuding myself, decided to leave right after class (as opposed to a night train that got there at 6 AM, not recommended). A note on train travel: a disadvantage of day trains is they often involve a lot of transfers. We had a total of 3 transfers, and then 1 bus and a taxi to get to Zdiar.) Finally got up to the village around 1 AM and somehow found our destination, the Ginger Monkey Hostel. We were greeted by a friendly fellow-hosteler Kate who ... read more

Yesterday we left the wonders of Poland to cross into Slovakia again. This actually turned out to be quite a journey. Luckily (or unluckily as it turned out) we didn't have to start this journey for a little while. Chris, our tour leader, told us to meet in the hotel reception at 12:10 to go to the bus station. This meant that we had the whole morning free to explore a bit more of Krakow. My roommate Susan decided to start the morning off with a bit of a speed walk around the walls of the old city. However since my knee has been playing up quite a bit I decided that it probably wasn't the best idea for me to join her on this walk. So I decided to lollop around in bed for a ... read more

Tatra Mountains - Tatranska Lomnica Day 14-15 (May 31-June 1) We had the morning to fill in, in Krakow and thought a visit to the local Shopping complex would be a good start. However, it turned out to be a public holiday for Pentecost, so waiting for the shops to open turned out to be fruitless. We filled in our time by catching up on our internet mail, as the weather wasn’t looking great. We then caught a bus to the border with Slovakia, where we then had a mini-bus that took us across the border to a stop where we could catch our third bus. However, the bus timetable had been changed and we would have had more than a two hour wait, so we organised for a local taxi to collect us. We arrived, ... read more
