Stayed in the small town of Lomnica in the foothills of the High Tatras Mountains. We had an early wake up every morning as the room is great apart from having only net curtains on the windows and the room faces East, so 4:30 every morning the sun shines into the room! The High Tatras are big and beautiful mountains and the weather was bright and sunny for our whole stay. They are on the border with Poland which also has resorts from which to visit them, we chose to stay here so that we can go hiking straight from the hotel. Did 2 days of big hikes; the first we were out for nearly 10 hours! Walked up the mountain to the top of the main cable car run, in a relatively easy round-about way ... read more

Monday July 8 – I am currently on the train to Spis Nova Ves, and from there I will take the bus to Levoca, if all goes well. My original plan consisted of me staying three nights here, because I thought it might take me a day to get to Levoca, then I wanted one day in that town and one day as a daytrip to visit Spis Castle, the real reason for coming. Now I think I may have enough time to see the town today and the castle tomorrow, so maybe I don’t need three days. Or maybe I can take another day trip to Kostice, the second city of Slovakia and one of the two European cities of Culture this year. Or maybe I can go and stay the night there and then ... read more

The change of time zone had a major effect on the sleep patterns of the BBA travellers last night as we grappled with the one hour change in time zone.To add to this were the 'sofa'beds we had last night to sleep on.We really must watch out for these if they are mentioned when we are checking places to stay at and avoid them if we can.Even the after effects of the incident near the border with the Romanian police which seemed to have worn us out last night still didn't mean we could get to sleep past 4.15am when it became light outside! The temperature also remained warm during the night and this morning it must have still been in the mid-20's which at least gave us a good reason to have breakfast on the ... read more

April 8, 2012. We drove from Ostrava to Slovakia and as we passed through the mountains around the border area, it started to snow. The forests were so beautiful. As we descended, it stopped snowing. There was a statue on top of a mountain in the distance and my friend said that is Radegast, a Slavik god. We passed by the new Strečno castle and the old Strečno castle, both are ruins. We stopped by the Bešeňová spa and it was €9 for 2 hrs. I went into every pool and there was a classical group performing live (a small string orchestra with piano, guitar, singers, etc). We stayed in Poprad with a family and they had a traditional fireplace in the middle of the living room which did not have the usual glazed ceramic on ... read more

Slovakia from 30 May to 1 June 2013 Even though Slovakia has had a rough history, it’s a beautiful country with mountains in the north. We are not going to the Capital, Bratislava but concentrating on the mountains. On the 30 May, we arrived later than usual at about 7.00pm, crossing the Czech/Slovac border and travelling 25 kms to Trencin, Slovakia. We stopped at the Na Ostrove Camping which was fair. The important criteria are that the showers are warm, clean toilets and there is power. We got going by 9.00am and to our positive surprise, the road that we thought we were going to travel on was actually a new highway. Our street directory showed that there was a new highway under construction but except for 200 m it was complete. Fantastic! We travelled through ... read more

We made an early start to Slovakia as Eileen had set the alarm to get through the shower early. We decided to breakfast along the way. We stopped at a small town remembering our pleasant experience in Slovenia. The local bar was open so we wandered in to find the local men having their breakfast - beer. The bar did not serve food. We noted that beer was a popular breakfast choice throughout the country – also to be enjoyed at morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea and with dinner. We tried another town for breakfast and ended up buying some forgettable food at a minimarket. A little further on, we bought some delicious peaches at a road side stall. Another thing that struck us on our first encounter with Slovakia is that the roads are flanked ... read more

We traveled today; therefore, this entry will be relatively short (or not). We took a cab to the local bus station from our hostel in Krakow. Upon arrival at the bus station, we purchased cheese croissants from a local old lady to satisfy our hunger until we arrived in Zakopane, which was our transfer city to Novy Smokovec, Slovakia. That said we did not know when the bus departed from Krakow. However, after the purchase of our cheese croissants – a necessity – we learned that we made it to the bus right on time. The 2-hour ride to Zakopane was a pleasure. The scenery was stunning and the local communities are far removed from the rush of modernity. As we headed south from Krakow the terrain transitioned from rolling hills to mountainous regions. Upon arrival ... read more

After the 1989 Velvet Revolution and subsequent 1993 partition of Czechoslovakia into the Czech Republic and Slovakia, it seems apparent that the Czech Republic took the nicer cities in Bohemia and Moravia while Slovakia got the gem of the Tatra Mountains. Hard to say who got the better deal. Spent a few days climbing in Slovakia's High Tatra Mountains National Park and checking out a castle. Today I arrived in Vienna. $1 ≈ 0.79€ Mt. Rysy I had previously contacted a guide through the Tatra Mountains Guide Service about day climbs of Rysy and Gerlachovský štít, the highest peaks in Poland and Slovakia respectively. Ervin called me at the pension after my arrival last Thursday and we established a pickup time of 7:30 am Friday morning which was nice as it allowed me to get breakfast ... read more

I should have guessed it wasn’t going to be my day when I balanced my sunglasses on my head in Levoca and then smashed them in half getting onto the bus. The day was planned to be one of life’s rites of passage – going to see my first football match in Europe. I had identified Tatran Presov v Artmedia Petrzalka as the occasion for this event. In anticipation, on arrival in Presov, I checked into the most expensive hotel in town – nearly £20 for an unrivalled view of Tesco. I spotted posters on lamp-posts advertising the game and walked the route from hotel to ground. The only decision now was how to fill the 24 hours until the match. But first a late-afternoon snooze. When I woke at about 6, I put on the ... read more
