Making our way back to Prague from Budapest we spent the weekend in Bratislava. Bratislava seemed like a bit of an out of the way destination, especially considering its proximity to Vienna - which to this day I still have never been - but I was pleasantly surprised by what Bratislava had to offer. When we arrived we checked into an Ibis which was completely void of character in the true Ibis style. It did, however, allow for only a short walk into Bratislava's pedestrian zone. Just as the sun was setting on our first night we walked out into the main square in Bratislava's pedestrian zone and were pleasantly surprised to find a Christmas market in full swing. We enjoyed the typical central European hot mulled wine while mixing with what seemed to be mostly ... read more

So we had a few days off and a few of my friends and I decided to cross the old Iron Curtain and see what life was like in Slovakia. We did very little there as we were only in country for a day. We saw some cool things, and some pretty ghetto things, and all in all, Slovakia is a lot more developed than I was expecting (and I wasn't expecting something as bad as Hostel or Eurotrip either) My favourite memories of Bratislava are the mediocre english that filled the streets (pictures of which are included) and the general laid back attitude that everyone had. For instance, when we were going into a museum about ancient Slovakia, Alia asked the young man at the desk if we could take pictures, to which he responded, ... read more

Yesterday some friends of mine and I trekked over to Bratislava (in Slovakia - it is only an hour-long train ride.) It was a nice excursion for nine euros round-trip, and we saw some interesting Soviet Block era buildings... haha, seriously, the skyline is all level. The cube-shaped buildings are just so stereotypical. We went to the castle and looked at the old artifacts and had two amazing meals for the price of probably a couple cups of coffee in Vienna. There are two parts of Bratislava - the "Old City" and the "New City" and we stayed on the Old City side where there were pretty buildings, and the castle, etc. But looking across the Danube, we could see the New City skyline, as well as way off in the distance, Austria! It was pretty ... read more

Today JC and I took a day trip from Vienna to Bratislava, Slovakia. We had a late night last night, so we didn't arrive there until about midday, but still had plenty of time to see what we have officially decided is the most boring city in the world.... or at least in the parts of the world we have seen so far! When we arrived, we walked the 2kms from the train station to the castle, only to find out that the castle is open everyday EXCEPT MONDAYS... just our luck of course! I have a great photo of JC standing in the very empty and forlorn looking courtyard with the most bored expression on her face... I'll post it when I get home for all to see. So, we wandered down the hill, took ... read more

We arrived in Bratislava in the early afternoon and immediately headed towards the oldtown. I must say, this city kind of surprised me…it manages to integrate the old-word with chic modernity. Right in the heart, I saw some of the coolest/swankiest bars and lounges outside of Miami. Our mission was to slow our pace and just stroll the streets. The city felt a bit sleepy, so our main source of entertainment was a scavenger hunt for the famous Bratislava statutes and then, much more importantly, the hunt for the perfect dinner location. It really was the perfect way to wind-down the trip. We settled on a spot that served traditional Slovakian cuisine, meaning, the national dish of Bryndzove…a creamy curd made of potato dough and sheep cheese sauce…hmmm hmm hm! Another bonus is the fact that ... read more

So today was a good day, we took a bus from wein into Bratislava which is the capital of Slovakia. I really wanted to go see it because in the movie Euro trip they accidently end up there and make it seem like it is a very poor part of eastern Europe, it is actually not a very bad city, it is fairly clean and very cheap, the exchange rate there is even better than it was in prague. We walked around and im pretty sure it was only because it is sunday but the city was ghost town there was hardly any people there. We got off the bus and walked along side the Danube river which is huge and it flows really fast, but it is really pretty and very clear for how fast ... read more

Vlacik jednym smerom a my druhym smerom hladat po vagonoch miesta, kam usadime nase zadky a rupsaky.

I’m a bit behind in my posts, but intend to catch up a little here in the next few days. Time flies just as quickly here as it does in the U.S. :-) On Sunday, October 15th, a group of four of us made a day-trip to Bratislava. Bratislava is an easy day-trip from Vienna by train. The ride there is just over an hour long, so really you could just go there for a night on the town if you wanted! We’d heard that everything was cheap in comparison to Vienna, and found that the food certainly was. I can’t verify the other merchandise. First off, the exchange rate is incredible if you’re coming from Vienna to Bratislava: 1 euro = 37 Sk’s. We weren’t, however, told that Sunday is a poor day to go ... read more

A brief stopover in Bratislava has been just the ticket as an introduction to Slovakia. The capital is noticeable for the slower pace of life and laid back attitude of the locals compared to neighbouring countries. Although it seems the Slovakians are reserved I recommend experiencing this relaxed lifestyle in a small city of 440,000 inhabitants. There are just over 5,000,000 people that inhabit the country of Slovakia. The Velvet Revolution in Prague bought down the communist regime in 1989 and the Slovak parliament voted to declare sovereignty from the former Czechoslovakia, thereby becoming an independent country in 1993. When arriving in Bratislava the Soviet era apartment blocks on the outskirts of the city provide a stark reminder of the communist past, but strolling around the historic old town in a leisurely fashion as the locals ... read more
