Day 9 - Moscow: Victory Day and a night with the Wolves Victory Day in Russia is huge. Commemorating the day that Nazi Germany fell to Russian troops and the end of a war that claimed 26.6 million Russian lives, it is a 2-day national holiday with parades, memorial services and celebrations across the country. The pride that the Russian people feel for their part in defeating Hitler and the Nazi regime cannot be overemphasised. More Russian lives were sacrificed in the war than from any other country, and judging by the number of old photos of dead relatives on display in shop, house and car windows as well as on banners or just clutched in a hand, no family escaped unscathed. Commemorative St Georges ribbons in orange and black were tied everywhere. More than any ... read more

Day 8 - Moscow Dave F had found an old style behemoth of a soviet hotel for us for the next two nights, so Friday morning we packed up the car and drove over there to check in. Today we were tourists pure and simple, with the Kremlin, St Basils and Gorky park on the agenda. It was a beautiful day so we walked into the city centre, foregoing the metro. We were all carrying our documents with us because Russian immigration police are known to do spot checks. Given that the next day Moscow would be hosting its biggest national event in a decade with national leaders in attendance, we expected security to be tight. Whilst there were police everywere however, no one was interested in us. I was also quickly revising my assumptions of ... read more

Day 7 - Rezkne to Moscow Information about the Latvian border crossing into Russia is sparse on the internet. We had prepared in every way possible though: Visas in passports, car registration, roadworthiness and insurance documents, international driving licences etc, and even a copy of our route map to clearly show our plans to travel through the country and out the other side. We also had a large meercat sat in the back to cheer up grumpy officals. First however, we had to play the Latvian leg of T.L.C.E.P. It was a grey dull morning, and we wanted to get to the border asap. Dave F therefore had to settle for a simple around-the-tree-and-back-then-hit-that-sign challenge for hole 7 in the park opposite. I was a bit nervy of hitting surrounding cars or passers by, but John ... read more

A long train journey through several countries has always been on my bucket list so upon retirement myself and my travel companion decided it was time to knock it off the list. We planned to begin our adventure in Moscow, following a holiday in Europe, and take the Trans-Mongolian Train (the most popular of the three routes crossing Siberia) from Moscow to Beijing. Planning was key to this journey and after months of research and discussion we opted to book through a travel agent and the one that seemed to suit us best and was very flexible was an Australian company called “FlowerTravel”. The reason we chose ‘Flower Travel’ was it allowed us to pick and choose our own itinerary - where to stop off and for how long. However as we flew from Spain to ... read more

Hey everyone.... I just wanted to put some thoughts down on paper and maybe get some feedback for my next long trip that I am currently planning after finishing my contract in Turkey mid next year. I have several options that I am strongly considering and had to change some original planning due to recent developments. Anyway, if any of my followers have been to some of these places your feedback and links to a blog you have written about them would be greatly appreciated Or if you just would like to share your thoughts that would be great as well. So with that below are my route options For July/august 2015 with a time frame of 4-6 months of traveling.... 1. India/Sri Lanka/Burma 2. Hey everyone! I just wanted to put an update out there on things here in Russia and working here. The school I work for here has some really good folks as far as management goes, but due to the crashing Ruble I was forced to explore other options abroad. When I got here at the end of September it was exchanging in the 30's -1, as of today it is now 51-1...since we get paid in local currency it isn't beneficial for me to stay here working/traveling/waiting in between classes for most days more than 10+ hours per day. I started putting my CV out there for January jobs that are opening and got quite a few interviews including going back to Vietnam to teach at a small university, Turkey, East Timor, Colombia, Ecuador, and Mexico ... read more

We set foot in Moscow on a crisp, cloudless evening, the cold winds driving away any lingering thoughts of our long journey. Dressed in bulky jackets, a few people fumbled for cameras as we waited for the shuttle that would take us from the airport to the city. Most of the class had made the journey as the trip coincided with our university’s spring break, but winter still reigned in Russia. One of the perks of studying at a space university is being granted access to the facilities of national space agencies. In this case, it was to visit the premises of the one of the oldest and most successful space agencies – the Russian Federal Space Agency. Having grown up reading the stories of the space race, of Sputnik and Gagarin, we could hardly contain ... read more
