Ever since I know Monica she was telling us stories about her summer vacantions spent in Borsec and promising us that someday she ll take us there just to have a taste of her paradise. First thing that comes in my mind when you say Borsec is the bottled mineral water winner of a gold medal for carbonated waters. I also knew that Borsec was a great tourist destination 20 years ago because of the natural mineral water springs and I might have been with my parents when I was 3-4 years old.... little have I known! Last week was her birthday and instead of partying in a club or dinner in a restaurant, we packed our bags and Friday morning we were on our way to Borsec. Borsec is located in North-Eastern part of Romania ... read more

Sighisoara Tuesday 12th February 2008 Ecstatic we were as the night train pulled into Budapest Keleti station, ready and willing to take us to Romania. The 3-birth sleeper carriage was fantastic; we were like children, excitably claiming our bunks. Unbelievably we managed to sleep through the entire journey, bar the odd interruption from passport control as we crossed the border. Transylvania greeted us at 8am with mist, smoky chimneys, and the distant spires of Sighisoara. Stepping from the train the cool and fresh air gave us a tremendous welcome. We made our way from the train station to the centre of town. With the Sighisoara Citadel in the background I finally decided to contact the bank regarding my card troubles. My account had been passed to the fraud department due to the number of countries my ... read more

Brasov Friday 15th February 2008 This would be our last full day in Transylvania, and our last full day of the trip. Due to unforeseen financial problems we’d been forced to terminate the trip early and had booked a flight back to Liverpool out of Bucharest. We spent the first portion of the day returning and booking into the hotel we’d visited the day before. Yes it was expensive but we wanted to go out on a high! The hotel was centrally located, immaculate and I managed to get a room of my own! Our waistcoat-wearing, excitable host was more than a little eccentric; his energy and enthusiasm was greatly appreciated after the previous night’s questionable experience in The Rolling Stone hostel. Snow was beginning to fall, and as this was the first time we’d seen ... read more

Brasov Thursday 14th February 2008 Valentine’s day in Transylvania, with a hangover, and an incredibly punishing one at that. The kind of hangover that persuaded the 3 of us to miss the early train to Brasov in order to sleep it off. When we eventually arrived at the train station, the sheer amount of people waiting to get onboard the train was ridiculous; we were sure we’d be without a seat. Luckily the train pulled in and the doors opened right before us. In cattle-like fashion we piled onto the train, managing to find 3 bizarrely heated seats on the upper floor. After a 2+ hour train journey we arrived in Brasov. We took a taxi to the old town centre and marvelled at the sights. I was eagerly anticipating the Black Church as I’d written ... read more

Sighisoara Wednesday 13th February 2008 One week into our adventure and we’d already travelled through Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary and Romania. Our second day in Sighisoara was rather quiet... well some of it. We spent the morning exploring the town, seeking out medieval watchtowers and churches. Rob and I posed for a photograph outside Vlad’s house and visited an underground internet café, whilst John caught up on some much needed sleep. For tea, we ate in the Casa Vlad Dracul Restaurant, conveniently located within Vlad the Impaler’s house. I had my first experience of frog’s legs, and the tomato soup was to die for! Little did we know at this point that within a matter of hours we’d be extraordinarily drunk, singing, dancing, and talking absolute rubbish with a group of British teachers. Jo Pub is ... read more

Ok, as I already thought, things never go exactly as you plan them. Due to technical problems (this pc of mine seems to be older than I am - and I am not getting any younger either = ) I couldnt upload my pics from the last days of travel around Sibiu. Finally here I am, hoping that I ll finish what I've started a few weeks ago. Although the plan was to visit most of the saxon fortified churches around Sibiu, Friday a few friends from Agnita and UK invited us on a fishing trip (70 km away from Sibiu) near the small village of Bradeni. Of course we planned to visit the churches from Agnita & Bradeni but also enjoy our time in the nature. Well, after the Medias experience we were all exhausted. ... read more

28-08-2008 Who’s house? Bram’s House Well it wasn’t really Bram Stoker’s house but Bran castle was what gave Bram the inspiration to write his famous book. Apparently Vlad never lived here, he just “dropped in for a visit” at some point in the 1500s. Jen, as a vampire enthusiast was thrilled to see the castle, but disappointed by the setting. She expected the castle to be on a ragged hill in the middle of the Transylvanian alps, not in a village with market stalls selling tacky vampire gimmicks and serving bloody vampire steaks with fangs. It’s as pity because the village and the castle itself is really scenic, if they just cleared out all of the tacky souvenirs and got rid of tourists it would be a lovely place - I know probably sounds familiar to ... read more

27/08/08 - A day in the life, and Ceausescu’s Mad Road Today we set out to drive along one of the highest roads in Europe - the Transfagarasan which borders on southern Transalvania. “The road was constructed between 1970 and 1974, as a north-south crossing at the historical border between Transylvania and Wallachia. It came as a response to the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Soviet Union. Ceausescu wanted to insure quick military access across the mountains in the event the Soviets attempted a similar move into Romania. Consequently, the road was built mainly with military forces, at a high cost both financially and from a human standpoint—roughly 6 million kilograms of dynamite were used on the northern face, and about 40 soldiers lost their lives in building accidents” - Read more about it on ... read more

26-08-08 Vlad’s House has chocolate cake We are in Sighisoara at present, we travelled across the north of Romania yesterday to arrive here late last night. It was a 12 hr day on the bike (for only 400 miles!), we saw some incredible winding roads, little villages, lots more horse power on the roads and lots of traffic. Back on to the subject of driving, Romania has another style all together, rules are guidelines, and guidelines only suggestions. They don’t see many motorcycles on the road here - mainly scooters and bicycles, from what I can make out a motorcycle is generally viewed as a bicycle so we were able to cut up past stationary traffic in cycle lanes with the encouragement of the locals - who where trying to fit small cars along the lanes ... read more

Caitlin and I spent the last three days in Bucharest, Romania. Bucharest was...uneventful. Its a pretty run down city with not much to speak for it besides a nice garden sculpture of a man playing a piano. We trained up to Brasov today in Transylvania which is a much nicer place to be. Its kind of like the ski-town of Romania. It sports cobble stone streets and well-aged buildings with more cafes than you can count. The whole town is backed by a nicely forested mountain which Caitlin and I will explore tomorrow. There are some gold plated castles around here that we are planning to see...Ill let you guys know if I see or kill any vampires. If I become a vampire Ill let you know after I bite you. So far so good...more to ... read more
