So I got the overnight train from Budapest to Sighisoara which was possibly the most terrifying experience of my life. The guards spoke no English and the departure boards made absolutely no sense...in the end it was simply a case of get on and hope. Luckily I managed to get on the right train, the right carriage and the right cabin (though someone had already stolen my bed) and the night went ok until we were first woken up by the Hungarian border patrol to check passports at about 2.30 am and then about an hour later by the Romanian border patrol. No why anyone would want to smuggle themselves into Romania is beyond me but the fact that they couldn't just both plan to do it at the same time and not keep waking us ... read more

Our first impressions of Bucharest, capital of the former Eastern European state of Romania, on walking out of the airport terminal was that it was a bleak, foreboding place where you had to watch out for yourself and your belongings at all times. Having been warned about airport taxis preying on new arrivals, we decided to take our chances on the public bus. Once on board, the locals regarded us and our backpacks with attitudes ranging from complete indifference to mild amusement. About halfway through the long trip into town, it began to pour with rain - not ideal considering that we had to walk some distance to our hostel once we arrived in the town centre. Sensing our concern, a friendly, twenty something year old woman struck up a conversation with me and helped us ... read more

Today we visited Sighisoara, home of Dracula, a Romanian folk hero. NOT the Disney Dracula! The castle dates back to the middle ages, although the settlement is probably older. Dracula pushed back the Turks who continually invaded Romania. We went there via train; a forty minute ride. Today was Peter's birthday, although we celebrated last night already with Peter, Hailey, Gerrit, Jane, Ed and I while the young people were at the youth group in Lunca. Tonight we had children's ministry in Cenade again. They are meeting with about twenty-five kids in a tiny home made out of cow dung and mud. Tomorrow we'll be at the Center of Hope in the morning and then going to church in Lunca in the afternoon. On Monday we hope to visit Copsa Mica, the polluted city. Although we ... read more

Night one: We spent the first night in Belgium which was so cold the tents froze at night. I spent the night shivering and wondering where the nearest airport was to get the first flight home!! Night Two: Night two was spent at our first proper stop in Cologne. We had two nights there and had time to look at the spectacular Dom Cathedral and went for dinner at a traditional German restaurant which sold Sausage by the metre. Night 4: Night 4 was spent in Bamburg where we sampled the local smoky beer. It tasted rather like a pint of liquid bacon and most people agreed was "interesting" and only has one pint. Had a quick look around Bamburg in the rain in the morning which is small and quaint in places but not ... read more

SIGHISOARA - TRANSILVANYA Aca nacio realmente Vlad Tepes AKA - "DRACULA".

Well...Sorry to leave you all hanging... We made it out of Athens! We went to the Embassy and right when we were there, our credit cards arrived - amazing! So, we hopped on the metro, transferred to the ferry, and traveled out to beautiful Ermoupolis on Syros Island. We spent the next few days exploring the island's beaches and feasting on delicious Greek seafood. Traveling back to Athens, we caught a train to Thessaloniki, Greece (where we would transfer to a night train to Istanbul). If Tirana to Athens was a nightmare bus ride, this was a train trip from Hades. (Get it...we're in Greece! mwhaha!) The train was so packed out, it was standing room only. No joke. We stood up (or sat on the floor) for the entire 7 hours to Thessaloniki. Awful! But, ... read more

Read this article on Roadjunky at http://www.roadjunky.com/article/1771/halloween-in-transylvania-bring-your-own-blood The Romanians just don’t know how to build a Dracula theme park. Communism took all the initiative out of them. I hurried along the dusty, cobbled streets of Sighisoara, trying to find my way back to the empty hotel near the train tracks. Around every corner, I had to dodge open graves and the leers from men standing inside them with shovels. The story ran through my mind about a 15th century prince who was captured by Vlad Tepes not far from here and forced to read his own funeral oration as he knelt before an open grave. It was dusk, last Halloween day. I had expected to arrive in town alongside thousands of tourists on a pilgrimage because apart from a little town in Mexico, where pumpkins are ... read more

well here we go again...lets try and get up to date.. Ian in the cockpit again. Seems like ages ago we last wrote. We left you in Turda in the north of Transylvania and our plan was to head south to the Saxon towns of Sighisoura and Brasov, see the castles and mountains of the Transylvanian Alps and then head due south to a border crossing to Bulgaria. We really would have like to have gone to the monastaries of the north and the 'rural idyll' of Maramures but this would have taken too long and unfortunately you cant do everything. In the end we spent over 2 weeks in Romania anyway and this was more than planned...jenny is craving that Croatian beach more and more!! South and East through Transylvania was really good terrain, rolling ... read more
