As today is a travel day and my last day in Lisbon I didn't do anything real exciting. Went down to the Santa Apolonia train station to book my overnight train just to be safe. The plan is to try and rush from the Chamartin train station in Madrid where I will arrive, to the Atocha station where I would get a train to Granada. It's going to be close making that connection. If I miss it Ill just put my bag in a locker in a station and go wander around Madrid waiting for the evening train, not the worst back-up plan. Anyways, after that I went and took a nap on the steps of some monument in the main square here. Now hundreds of tourists will have pictures of this beautiful city square with ... read more

OK This is the life! Didn’t want to wake up this morning but had to be up for breakfast and ready for the bus for the tour of Porto at 9am (I know what it sounds like) Porto is just gorgeous. We had a tour missed getting a photo of this really funny sight of a dog leaning on the window sill of a very old apartment building in the sun. Of course here was yet another beautiful church this time Baroque. Then we got off the bus and did our own thing. We came back by funicular to the bottom and then walked along the river bank back to the boat in time for lunch. Porto is just lovely and not so many tourists. Then off to the port maker for the tour and class ... read more

So here we are on board the Duomo Queen on the river Duomo, Porto, Portugal at dusk. We are sitting on our little deck looking up and watching all the lights come on lighting up the cathedrals and buildings in the old city. It is very beautiful. There is a mist coming down after a 28 degree day. We arrived here by bus at 4 o’clock this afternoon and unpacked in time for welcome drink and dinner. The staff are lovely and can’t do enough for us. Dinner was 6 courses and beautifully presented. There are still sightseeing trips every day so we will be doing some walking but it won’t be enough to work off the three multi course meals. Haven’t blogged since we got to Lisbon as by the time we arrived two hours ... read more

Got off to a pretty slow start today for a couple reasons. For one we were up pretty late last night and two, I had to do laundry. So I dropped off a load downstairs and paid the hefty 7 euro fee. Not really sure how that is justified but there is no way I am wasting my time washing, drying and folding that stuff when I am on vacation. Spent the couple hours I had to kill waiting for the load to be done looking into future travel plans and sending out some couch surfing vibes to people along my route. Right now it looks like I will skip the south of Portugal (the Algarve) and just head to Andalucia with a possible stop in Madrid thrown in. For some reason the beaches of the ... read more

Got a great night of sleep last night to compensate for the night before. Checked out of the dull hostel I had got into just the night before so I could go get a little taste of Coimbra before heading to Lisbon. Coimbra was really not much more than I expected. It is still a very attractive city and fun to talk around for a day in but I dont see much more than that. I walked around the university which has been around since 1290 I believe. Its on top of a hill which overlooks most of a city which is pretty cool. After that I didnt really plan on seeing much else so I went shopping for a pair of shorts and a t-shirt to replace the ones I left at Adam's back in ... read more

Quite an interesting day in Lisbon, albeit a good one. Got a little bit of the history of the country and city and then followed that up with a little taste of the current politics. I went on a walking tour of the old district of Lisbon in the morning. It was just a small group of us which was nice, pretty personal. We had our tour guide, Bernardo, a local around our age, myself, Adam the Australian from last night and two cool people from Brazil. It was pretty informal but we did get some good historical info to back up what we saw. Hit most of the main points in the city including a couple churches, some plazas, the castle on top of the hill and more. Certainly a good way to see the ... read more

Got up and went on a run to get rid of the small hangover from last night before I hopped on a train north to Braga, the religious capital of Portugal. It is one of the oldest cities in the country as evidenced by the remaining Roman city walls. The weather wasnt great the first few hours as I was there but by the afternoon it was 75 and sunny, like usual here. For some reason I decided to walk out to the Bom Jesus religious site instead of taking the train. After getting lost for a bit I finally arrived there after two hours. Probably about a 6 or 7 mile walk. Not good times, bad times. It was definitely worth it though. The path up the mountain that the church sits on starts towards ... read more

So today is my day to explore Porto. Maria's friend that I met last night, Alberto, came to pick me up around 10am and from there we took a bus and a train south about 30 miles or so to Porto. The city is much larger and more beautiful than I thought. It sits on the ocean with the River Duoro (Golden River) running through it. The river used to be used to transport wine from the vineyards outside the city down to the centre area to be sold but now it simply divides Porto from V.N. Gaia, the city right across the river from Porto. I would get a bunch more historical tidbits from my tourguide Alberto the rest of the day (thanks Alberto!!!) The downtown area of Porto is fantastic, particularly along the river. ... read more

Today is my last day here, quite sad. Definitely going to miss everyone a lot. Got up late on account of being up till this morning. After finally getting going Catia drove us out to Gaia for a lunch typical in Alentejo. Once again I loved it and once again they did not believe me ha. Played a little geocache in the afternoon. For everyone who doesn't know what that is it is a game organized online where people post caches and instruction on how to find them by leaving simply their GPS coordinates. Then you use some sort of GPS tracker to find it and then using the clues they give you to find the final spot. Its a real cool way to explore parts of your city that you have never been to before. ... read more

Como sempre, barra libre - drink all you can - até as 2:30 da manha. Meu trem saía as 4:30, então ficamos lá ate ali pelas 3 da manhã. Antes de ir para casa paramos para comer kebab. Nunca tinha comido. É simplesmente uma delícia! Acho que vou viciar nisso! Ainda bem que tem algumas opções bem light como a que eu esco... read more
