The Douro is the third-longest river in the Iberian Peninsula after the Tagus and Ebro. Its head waters are in Spain. Its total length is 897 kilometres (557 mi) "The Douro runs through one of Europe’s most beautiful stretches of countryside, flanked by vineyards under the warming Portuguese sun. Traditional wineries and charming villages break up the fields of green which typify the Douro region. Before reaching the Atlantic Ocean, the Douro dissects the ancient city of Porto on its final leg. The entire Portuguese nation owes its existence to the Douro, around which the country was founded." On Thursday, we took a seven hour cruise up the Douro River to Ragua, where we had a two hour stay, and then a ninety minute train ride back to Porto. The price included br... read more

"The wine producing Douro region is the third oldest protected wine region in the world after the Tokaj-Hegyalja region in Hungary, established in 1730, and Chianti, in 1716. Grapes grown for port are generally characterized by their small, dense fruit which produce concentrated and long-lasting flavours, suitable for long aging. In 1678, a Liverpool wine merchant sent two new representatives to Viana do Castelo, north of Oporto, to learn the wine trade. While on a vacation in the Douro, the two gentlemen visited the Abbot of Lamego, who treated them to a "very agreeable, sweetish and extremely smooth"... read more

"Located along the Douro river estuary in Northern Portugal, Porto is one of the oldest European centers, and its historical core was proclaimed a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996. The western part of its urban area extends to the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean. Its settlement dates back many centuries, when it was an outpost of the Roman Empire. Its combined Celtic-Latin name, Portus Cale, has been referred to a... read more

Portugal Our first port of call was Porto. We took the local bus into the center of the city and walked down to the riverfront. It reminded me of Valparaiso in that it was very hilly. The streets and sidewalks are cobbled and that makes it a bit of a challenge for me. Still we persist. This is a town that respects it’s architecture and character and still maintains its Old World charm. It must be a zoo in summer since the square was chock-a-block with people. In the center is the church of Clerigos. It’s facade is beautifully tiled. We picked a narrow street leading downhill and checked out the shops. Near the square they were ticky tacky souvenir shops but here and there there was a goldsmith shop with delicate and intricate jewelry. This ... read more

After a great day in Sintra, we hopped on a train and headed north up to Porto.... Porto is Portugal's second largest city, and in my opinion, the most beautiful... It is situated on the Douro river and known for it's picturesque bridges, Baroque churches and old school Port houses. Our first intro to Porto was unfortunately a bit dicey lol! It had been raining when we arrived by train, it was damp, grey and misty... We used trusty Google maps to find our way from the train station to our apartment that had some rave reviews on both trip advisor and Expedia.... apparently it was only 500m from the station... yay right?? Google maps sent us up this street - aka steep cliff-like-hill who's name LITERALLY translates into 'Body Guard" in Portuguese.... We started our ... read more

Sorry for belated updates! I’m back in the US, moved to a new city (Baltimore), and about to start a grad school program. In the interim, let me fill you in on my travels from June onward . . . About 21 months earlier, I’d flown into Porto to begin my Spain program. I hadn’t been outside continental Europe since that day. I thought it was fitting to leave the continent (temporarily, to go to England and Wales) through Porto as well. The flights are generally the cheapest in the area, the airport is well-connected transportation-wise, and most importantly I love Porto (regular readers will probably know this by now). I think in total I visited Porto 4 times, although one was just an overnight hostel stay without much tourism. Each time, I stayed in a ... read more

Liz wanted to go and see Porto. We were close a few years ago but never made it to see the place.. So this time it was on. for a hectic drive through small villages where you have to stop for all sort of things that move from one to the other side of the street. Truck take the whole road so it very hard to pass. anyway we arrived in Porto late afternoon and the GPS took us right to the front door. The car park was over the road and . they gave us a hand with the luggage, so all good. Having first a cup of coffee we went out to see what Porto had to offer. As first we noticed it is a city where all streets go up and down that ... read more

We are on the way again. Still in Spain but slowly making our way to Portugal. Our next stop was Leon. We had been here before and on the way to Portugal. We knew we staying in the old town and were warned about the post in the middle of the road. You had to ring the monastery and they would arrange it from there. But there was no need to. Saw how another one got through while the post was up so did the same and our GPS took us right to the door and that was the time we saw we were at the same place we stayed three years ago, a bit of a shock. We remembered we had a good stay there so were happy to stay there again. Last time we ... read more

Leaving the sunshine of the Algarve,we headed north early for what I consider to be the heart and soul of this Iberian country. Evora This was our first stop after hours of driving on beautiful roads, away from the coast and into the interior hill country, bypassing numerous small towns and villages. Besides the sightseeing in the city itself, the most amazing discovery was the megalithic stones discovered nearby. The stones of Almendres Cromlech, have been in use since 6,000 BC and are two thousand years older than those of Stonehenge. It is worth Googling this for more in depth information. Tomar This small town of 40,000 was the perfect introduction to authentic Portugal. Later on, I will share an incident that we had with the police on the highway after we left this town on ... read more

Driving from Lisbon to Porto was another day of a seeing how many tolls we could avoid. On arrival in Porto the outer suburbs could almost have been anywhere in Australia. Quite different to the typical narrow streets and barely a footpath let alone any sign of a nature strip that we have become used to. Our apartment was at the top of the hill with a long walk down into the town centre. It is apparent that there is generally less money about in Portugal than Spain with a number of property developer opportunities looking for a bank balance. Very sad to see so many run down buildings that were obviously grand in their day. You get the feeling that in a few years time the locals will not be able to afford to live ... read more
