What an incredibly fantastic city! Five days here is not enough, but that’s all we had, so we were really 'on the go' all the time, walking a lot, took the tram sometimes up and down the hills and visiting the most important places in and outside town. We had splendid weather all the time - life was wonderful! NOTES: Labelled "The City of Emotions" Lisbon is a fascinating and comprehensive capital city with a population of about a million people. It also has many interesting museums and you most definitely need more than the 4 days we had there to see it all. Baixa, Lisbon's old business hub, is the centre of town with neatly laid streets and big praqas. The praqas (square) work well as decorative bookends to new Lisbon, completely rebuilt after the ... read more

The last 30 kilometres were hectic to struggle our way through the traffic and reach our Hotel on a very busy rotonde or what we say roundabout. Lisboa has two million inhabetants. An earth quake in 1755 destroyed most of this city. But enough Morish influenced buildings remain and some are spectecular. The footpath are interesting. All are paved with small blocks of limestone, basalt and other materials they are layed out in patterns. On the roundabout where we stay is a statue of a dictator Pombal, who was in charge of the reconstruction of Lisboa. We are on the 7th floor and have million dollar views. Our first time out eating finnished up in an obscure local eatery, where they serve mini snails that were very popular and pork stomach and other things we have ... read more

It was an after thought to have a look at those two places for we were very close. We had a bed and Breakfast on the outskirts of Leiria. We stayed with a very nice man who came original from Belgium. He talked a hundred out and was at times very funny as well. We were only two nights there so we had one whole day to go to first Fatima and on the way back was Batalha that has en enormous big church, but about that later.Fatima is only 15 k.m. away from where we stayed. Did not take long to get there. We quickly found somewhere to park. Very cheap only one Euro for 2 hours. We walked the small distance to where the Sanctury is. It is an enormous area. It is the ... read more

Fatima Today will be a long bus ride day as we depart Portugal and head back to Spain. Our journey is coming close to the end with only 3 days left before we bid adieu and return to our normal lives back home. Today we visit the Shrine of Fatima, a holy site sanctioned by the Holy Sea. You may recall that it was here is 1920 that three young children, a brother and sister and their cousin, were visited by the Virgin Mary as the children tended their goats. The Virgin appeared to the children a number of times and revealed to the visionaries several prophesies. There were a total of three major prophesies revealed to the children to be shared with the world. If anyone is interested in the prophesies and their meaning there ... read more

Lisbon Tonight we were treated to taste extravaganza. We rode the bus to the port area of Lisbon to a local sea food restaurant, the same one we went to 5 years ago. Nothing changed since last we were there. Even the same waiters were there. We also were lucky enough to be seated near two large screen TV’s tuned into the Euro 2012 match between England and Italy. Nothing could be better than food and futbal! First the food. We all sat down to an unlimited supply of food and drink. There was on the table already fresh prawns. These were not ordinary prawns but a full 6 inches each, with the heads still on! MY family would not touch them with the eyes looking back pleading, so I was assigned to peel them so ... read more

Strangely our ship is still at the docks, awaiting unloading; apparently there are too few dockers to work on the ships, so we may have another day here. That's nice too, getting to know Lisbon, and really enjoying the warmth here. Delightful city, very easy to wander, feels very old. I feel settled on the ship too, my room enormous, comfy bed, complete with fridge, ensuite bathroom, desk, will try to add photo. The only other passenger is a french woman of similar age, Francoise, who has been on board since France. The Polish captain is full of machismo, the crew are extremely polite and respectful, and the food so far is... fairly OK. Good I've brought plenty of my own. Yesterday morning after being rudely surprised by a message to get to the ship by ... read more

It's been really difficult to get prepared and set off, what with having the flu for weeks, and then the ipad incident (where I bought a new ipad, only to have it stolen a few days later, with all the related complications, police visits, forensics, not to mention hours of talking to insurance people etc. thankfully resulting in receipt of new ipad the day before I left UK). Sorry to moan, but it has been like wading thru mud! Still, I did manage to copy some family trees, photos, and letters for the relatives in Canada. I found a container ship to take me as passenger across the Atlantic, sadly not from Liverpool, but from Lisbon, and arriving in Montreal as my grandfather and his brother did, which feels very exciting. Sailing along the great St ... read more

Our Time in Lisbon... After a stop over in Turkey, a night in Barcelona, some extremely dodgy flights and an hour and a half wait for our bags we finally arrived in Lisbon. Our first day in Lisbon was jam packed; first we set out to explore the lush verdant hills of Sintra. Sintra is a Unesco World Heritage site and its fairy tale like setting was a perfect introduction to Portugal. While at Sintra we got our blood sugar levels up by trying a famous local pastry, the queijada and cherry liquor in a chocolate cup! After our sugar fix we took a leisurely stroll through the romantic city centre. Then we headed to one of the best kept secrets in Portugal, "Qunita da Regaleira". The palace and surrounding gardens were truly magical ... read more
