Mon objectif principal à Santa Maria, plonger !

... read more

After a gray, rainy day at sea yesterday, today's beautiful sunshine was a much-welcomed gift! And although a visit to the Azores was not on our original itinerary, it was a very pleasant surprise. Like the rest of the islands in the Azores, the topography was beautiful - rolling green hillsides with small towns sprinkled here and there. The town of Ponta Delgado has about 45,000 people with about 150,000 on the whole island. It's a lovely town with small streets, cobblestone sidewalks with outdoor cafes and beautiful building architecture. Two beautiful Catholic churches were especially beautiful. We were also treated to a free performance of a kids' drum and bagpipe group. The kids ranged from very young to teenagers, and their expertise was impressive. When the ship left port, I was reminded that sail aways ... read more

Geo: 38.5333, -28.6333I'm not sure that our stop in Horta is blog worthy but given that it's the first time in days that we've seen dry land it's probably worth a pin in the map. It's a clear sign that you're travelling too much when you opt to take a 26 day trans-Atlantic cruise to Europe rather than put up with the miseries involved in flying. To be fair we had a good time on our last, somewhat accidental cruise so we thought we'd jump on one that, in addition to taking us across the ocean, would take us to a number of destinations that would likely be one day stops even if we were traveling without the aid of a floating tour bus. We had planned on joining the cruise as our Mexican exit but ... read more

Stepping off the plane into fresh Azorean air instantly brings me back to the first time I traveled here. Arriving on this tiny Portuguese island in the middle of the Atlantic is breathtaking. You can gaze out at the ocean while descending the steps from the plane. And if you’ve ever visited Sao Miguel, you know the smell: flowers, basalt and just a hint of sweet cow manure. Heaven! The airport is just a mile and a half from Ponta Delgada (henceforth lovingly referred to as simply 'Ponta') the surprisingly cosmopolitan city of about 20,000. Walking to Ponta from the airport is a pleasant 20-30 minute walk. The island is sleepy, as islands tend to be, and the ancient narrow tiled streets all seem to lead down to the port. It was on this walk to ... read more

Happy Birthday Eliza. Had the most amazing day again today...seem to be having so many of them these days. We hired a car and picked it up at 10am. Cost us E30 and E10 for insurance but that was much cheaper than any other company we found. We actually found the place by accident whilst looking for the Immigration place, we walked past this little shop and just ‘enquired’ ended up booking a car on the spot. So today we took off, and headed around the island in an anti-clockwise direction. We got off the main highway and took the narrow coastal roads. Lots of stunning scenery. We visited all the main towns and got out to walk around at Praia Da Vitoria. This is where the other marina is, but it’s much smaller, better protected, ... read more

23rdJune First running of the bulls for us today. This one is for the kids. It was held on the beach so harder for the bulls to run. The bulls are smaller, and are ‘contained’ by a long rope. It was strange as the bulls really wanted to run into the water and swim, but the guys on the rope kept pulling them out. I watched a few but then as both bulls and people had not been hurt, went for a walk up the street so that I didn’t risk seeing anything or one get hurt. It’s not really my thing to watch, but so very steeped in tradition here – they don’t kill the bulls anymore in the Azores, and don’t poke and prod them with spears (out here in the streets, but think ... read more

16thJune Horta to Sao Jorge today. Before we left, we went into Peters to see the Scrimshaw Museum. Such a massive collection of so many pieces – of anything you could imagine. Many of the men used to carve portraits of their loved ones and some of them in here were just stunning. There are religious ones, self portraits and of course the whaling stories – amongst so many others. On teeth, bones, there was just so much! Had a lovely sail across, fast and smooth. Jacaranda also went out for a day sail, they might be coming to Sao Jorge tomorrow. Boomerang might also come across tomorrow. Sao Jorge is a tiny little marina set against a massive cliff. A stunning anchorage - in fact a photo of the place is on the “Atlantic Island” ... read more
