My mom and I are off to the Azores! What and where are the Azores you might ask? I asked myself that very question the first time I saw this trip pop up on TravelZoo several years ago. Through the wonder of Google, I learned the Azores are a group of islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean that are part of Portugal. There are nine islands and we are visiting the third largest, Terceira. Guidebooks are limited so we are going in a bit blindly, but it will make discovering this island that much more interesting. Here is our itinerary! March 14 - Depart O'Hare at 4:34 arriving in Boston at 7:55 PM Depart Boston at 11:05 PM arriving in Terceira at 6:45 AM on the 15th March 15 - 22 - Reservation at ... read more

Aah, the island life, slow, relaxed and comfortable. That is, unless you have only a few hours at port on a cruise ship. At our Azores port of call, we opt for a bus tour to show us both ends of the Sao Miguel Island, with a few stops along the way. Before boarding our tour bus, Peter & I walk the artistically paved streets of San Juan, where our ship landed, and try to enjoy the relaxing vibes. Our cruise guide, a 30-year veteran in the industry, was funny, smart and also revered her homeland. Starting in San Juan she filled us in the background of the earliest Portuguese settlers (apparently there were no displaced natives to be displaced here) and the battles with Spanish and Vikings. They built fortresses and stunning structures meant to ... read more

Ponta Delgada is the capital and largest city of this Portuguese island. It is a common stop for ships traveling from Europe en route to the Americas. Since Barb and I have been here 3 times already, we decided to enjoy a nearly empty ship while everyone else went on shore excursions. The last time we were here we did travel to the Volcano, the Tea Farms, and the Botanical Gardens, so if any of you stop at the Azores, be sure to check these out!... read more

The Azores Islands.... We have never thought of visiting these islands in the Atlantic Ocean. But when Paramahamsa Vishwananda, our spiritual master, announced that he was giving Darshan on Sao Miguel, we immediately looked for flights. Whenever we can make it, we try to travel and see him wherever he is in this world. And here it was, a big possibility. We had to take it :-). And we were surprised, with some low cost carriers flying there, it is quite a cheap affair. By approaching the islands the shaking of our plane made it obvious. There is lots of wind here. And I mean - LOTS! To be honest, during our 4 days the wind was constantly blowing with about 4 Beaufort. Anywayy, our plane landed safely at midnight in Ponta Delgada, the main city ... read more

1st May Ponta Delgada Our final port of call was Ponta Delgada on the island Sao Miguel, Azores. This is a remote Portuguese archipelago some 760 miles west of Lisbon in the Atlantic Ocean. It consists of nine islands in three groups and was first settled by Gonçalo Valho Cabral in 1439, there is a statue of him at the city gates. The land commands a high price because of its fertility, dairy products, live cattle are the most important trades along with beet-sugar, alcohol and pineapples. Ponta Delgada has narrow and cobbled winding streets and in lots of ways reminded us of Funchal, Madeira. A lot of the buildings are whitewashed and have wooden balconies. The streets are paved with mosaics and there are churches at most street corners (or so it seemed). We wandered ... read more

Six days at sea without sight of land is nearly at an end. There has been plenty of entertainment in the evenings to keep most people entertained. There is usually at least one game show/trivia in the evening for those who haven't had enough of the three trivia sessions during the day. One such game show that Roisin and I played was based on the TV show Jeopardy. Each team is given a grid with subjects along the top and a value ($100, $200, $300 etc..) down the side. The quiz master will say 'Food and drink for $300'. The question is read out and each team write their answer in the appropriate space. One nominated team member then runs down to the front of the stage and, if the question is right, receives the equivalent ... read more

Today we are docked in Funchal in Madeira. It was great to awaken this morning and see the sun shining. Again, our plans have changed slightly, as we do not want to overstretch George and his good progress in getting better. We walked from the ship into town and took a really good wander around some of the local shops. Last time we were here, we purchased some curtain material. We found the same shop again and bought some other different material. We had a wander around the fish market which always has some unusual fish on display then headed back to the boat very leisurely. As the sun was still shining, we took the opportunity to spend a couple of hours in posh soaking up the sun upstairs on deck 18. Having enjoyed Cagney’s steak ... read more

Thursday 3rd March, 2016. Ponta Delgada, São Miguel, Azores The Azores are located in the North Atlantic Ocean approximately 1815 km from the Portuguese mainland, 1200 km from Madeira and 2625 km from Newfoundland in Canada. The archipelago comprises 9 islands and several islets and is part of the biogeographic region of Macronesia, along with the archipelagos of Madeira, Canary Islands and Cape Verde. The archipelago is located at the junction of the north American, Eurasian and African lithospheric plates on a large area of the Atlantic with depths below 2000 metres, with an approximate triangular shape, known as the Azores Plateau. In general terms, the Mid Atlantic Ridge divides the American plate from the African and Eurasian plates while the Gloria Fault and the Azores Block (or microplate) forms the frontier between the Eurasian and ... read more

After the highest seas we’ve yet experienced and a most restless night we did finally get some shut-eye in the calmer waters approaching Ponta Delgada in the Azores. The sun was already coming in through the window, and we could see the shoreline getting closer as we approached the harbor. We’d been late signing up for tours in the Azores, and a phone message yesterday confirmed what we’d feared when we hadn’t received our excursion tickets in our mail drop by the door. Both of the excursions that we’d selected for the Azores had already filled. So today we would be on our own and need to wing it, as it were. We went up to the Lido where I had some fried eggs, sausage patties and some mixed pan fried potatoes. Sharon had just a ... read more

Mon objectif principal à Santa Maria, plonger ! J’ai entendu parler des plongées à Santa Maria il y a un peu plus d’un an ... read more
