BERMUDA TO THE AZORES – The Journey Home We had a fabulous crossing from Bermuda to the Azores. Delays caused by sorting out the roller furling gear seemed to have put us into a favourable weather window. We enjoyed a passage from Bermuda to Flores in just under 13 days with down-wind sailing and relatively light airs. We used the weather files to steer ourselves around poor weather and balanced our fuel and wind to get the best route and benefit from our limited fuel. We felt it was better to load our daily log entries as it reflects how we felt at the time. Apologies if you have read them all before – hopefully the photos will make it more interesting. I set the alarm for 7am but of course Ken is up at 5:30 waking me up asking me 'what time is it'. Oh my gosh, if it was time to get up the alarm would go off. He later explains that he heard a helicopter, thus we must be close to land. Our arrival was supposed to be 8am so he was worried we overslept. He tosses and turns for the next hour and a half, stealing a good sleep. He is like a kid in a candy store excited about our adventure today. I get up at 7 and he brings me a latte and an almond croissant...trying for redemption! We have arrived in Porta Delgado and it is beautiful. He even called Bobbie and Annie and made sure they were up. He woke ... read more

Went to breakfast and then met the gang and went shore. Four of us (Roxie, Pat, Kenny and I) hired a taxi to take us to the crater lakes. Absolutely beautiful island. Everything is sooo green and in multi-shades of green. Cows in the pasture. The island is the top of an undersea volcano and we went to the top and saw water all around us going up and down the mountains. First warm, sunny day we have had – probably in the 60’s. Lots of beautiful hydranian’s. Then I went back to the ship and caught up on my blog entries, which you got hit with yesterday and checked my 400 emails, much of it spam. It was Italian night at dinner so we all ate very well. After dinner Roxie, Barb, Gary & I ... read more

September 17 - September 25, 2012 (note - I have included many collages to include more photos - if you can not see them, click on the photo to make them larger) Yes, we had said that Sao Miguel would be the last island in the Azores we would visit before going to the mainland, but tropical storm Nadine had other plans. Earlier in August hurricane Gordon came through when we were in Terceira. The marina was very careful to take in some of the floating docks near the opening and moved boats to more protected areas. Everyone prepared for the worse, but fortunately Gordon went to the south of us and passed close to Santa Maria which is about 90 miles from Sao Miguel. All we received were much higher waves and quite a bit ... read more

Just before we left Sao Miguel we were strolling on the walkway near the marina at Ponta Delgada and all of a sudden the sky became enflamed and luckily we had our trusty camera with us. It seemed that every couple of seconds the sky kept changing and as a result we took numerous photos to try to capture some of it. As we had so many photos that appeared to be quite good we recruited some help from our friend, Cyndie to be our photo editor! She did a great job of narrowing down 33 photos to 6 which was an amazing job. If you count the photos here you can see that there were a couple of more that I just felt I had to add. Make sure to scroll down below the text ... read more

It appears that we now have a weather window to make our crossing from the island of Santa Maria in the Azores to mainland Portugal. Our plan is to leave tomorrow AM (Tuesday, 9/25) which will get us to land 6 days later (October 1st) if the weather stays as planned! It should be nice for the evening hours as the full moon is September 29th. We will be heading to Lagos on the southern coast where we have reservations at the marina there for 6 months. We had thought before we would head to Porto along the Atlantic coast, but with the weather predictions we figure it will be a nicer sail to Lagos. We will try again to keep you updated on our progress on www.shiptrak.org (you need to enter our call sign of ... read more

Ah, the joys of sailing! The last blog entry stated that we thought we would leave for Santa Maria on September 16th. Instead we set off at 7AM on the 17th, the winds were predicted to be better. It turned out to be not bad, we had enough wind to sail the 10 hours arriving in Vila do Porto at 5PM. The ride was rolly because the wind was directly behind us and the waves were hitting us on the beam (non-sailors, on the side), but it is much better than “on the nose”. This gave us more time to play tourist therefore as a result we have a few photos to show you from the last couple of days on Sao Miguel and our arrival on Santa Maria. Instead of going far afield the last ... read more

Hike PR4SMI – Mata do Canario Sete Cidades – Sao Miguel We had a beautiful sunny day on September 4th so planned a day of hiking around Sete Citades. We caught the 8:25AM bus from Ponta Delgada (3.36 euro/person each way) to the village of Sete Cidades. The almost one hour ride on a luxury bus gave us a chance to see the south eastern side of the island. In talking to the information bureau they informed us that we should take the bus to the village at the bottom of the caldeira and we would have to hike UP around the caldeira OR the other option would to take a taxi to the starting location from Ponta Delgada for approximately 25 euro ($31.25). We found out there was a third option. When we got to ... read more

Sao Miguel is the largest and most populated of the nine Azores islands. The marina is in the city of Ponta Delgada which is also where the cruise ships come to therefore they are definitely accustom to tourists. Fortunately for us we have not seen any cruise ships in port as it must be out of season here. We just found out the other night that the cruise ships only stop in November and April when they travel between the Mediterranean and the Caribbean – lucky for us! The town itself has numerous historic buildings dating back to the late 1500’s. Most of the churches we have seen are in the architectural style referred to by the guidebooks as “Portuguese Simple/Manueline”, but there is nothing simple about these churches. They are primarily constructed of locally obtained ... read more

september 5, 12:16pmI´m finally leaving the Açores. I almost can´t believe it. I´m so ready to leave, but at the same time, I know I´m leaving a piece of my heart in this beautiful place. It´s hard to believe that I spent the entire month of August in Portugal, and a full three weeks with Shannon´s family in Sao Jorge. I learned so, so much. I learned so much, and I´m so grateful. It was just so right. That´... read more
