Geo: 39.4104, -7.34076Shortly after waving off neighbours Nick and Caroline yesterday (Wednesday) morning we set off on our bikes (ashamed to say it is the first time I have used mine for about a month) turning left outside the gates, along quiet lanes. The landscape was very reminiscent of parts of the UK with its boulders, dry stone walls and oak trees, but the cork trees were somewhat alien to us.Fascinating fact about cork: did you know that once the tree is about 25 years old it is harvested from the tree once every ten years which is why you see a year number painted on the trunk? Also, Portugal produces about 50% of the world's corks.Anyhow, our ride suited me down to the ground since the road surface was quite smooth, very little traffic, beautiful ... read more

Geo: 39.4104, -7.34076Yesterday (Tuesday) morning we drove the five-minute journey, the same one that David had cycled the previous evening, to nearby Marvao, the spectacular hilltop town which we can see from the campsite. After parking up we entered the walled town on foot climbing up the cobbled streets lined with beautifully whitewashed houses. At the Castelo Cafe we stopped a while and enjoyed a coffee and slice of custard tart on the shady terrace just admiring the wonderful view and watching the world go by.Suitably refreshed, we then took to exploring via the path around the walls which looks out towards Spain on the south side and Castelo Branco and the Serra de Estrela on the north side, and you can see for miles and miles on such a bright, sunny day. Given this strategic ... read more

We had a bad night , Suzy rocked with the thud, thud of the music from the club across the road and she rattled from the beat of the traffic passing by. Even Sion hid inside his comfort blanket and friend Baa Baa the sheep. We called in to ask for a refund and were curtly told no chance. Perhaps by now we should have learned to check the site and the plots first before parting with money. And best of all only pay for one night until the campsite proves a good place to stay. We were glad to leave the city and head out again into the Portuguese countryside. The roads were yet again empty. It was Monday morning after all and we are now heading back home. We have reached the furthest point ... read more

You know I have to apologize a bit, I've been so busy out exploring, driving, learning all about Portugal than I'm behind in my blogging. I have 5 days half done, sitting on my iPad but they are in notes so not 'blog worthy' but know I am making an effort! My clothes are starting to smell like I've been away for 2 weeks, despite me trying to wash everything to avoid 'that travel smell' and I'm running out of perfume to cover it! Good thing I have a room to myself:-) Portugal is hot, hot and then hot again! Wine, amazing Be My Guest experience, UNESCO sites, 9th century Roman walled cities, great coffee, great chocolate, 100% hand painted tiled churches, churches filled with bones to name a few things I've enjoyed. Portugal is a ... read more

Tuesday, Sept 4 We woke to a calm sea and a sunny day. The Spanish coast was a distant cloud on the horizon. Around us there was nothing but sea but we knew that later today we would be passing through the Straits of Gibraltar and the shipping lanes would be crowded. The morning was spent catching up on chores – washing clothes, tidying our rooms, cleaning the windows (yes, they do open), downloading photos. Sylvia sewed and sewed and sewed - she has two baby quilts to finish before we get back to Oz! Lunch: Beef soup / Fish, Potato salad / Fruit. We kept a watch on the bridge during the afternoon as Gibraltar got closer. There was a constant radio dialogue between all of the ships in the area and the Gibraltar coast ... read more

Wether you’re on vacation in Grandola, passing by or simply going out for a meal, Cruzamento it’s the ideal stop to enjoy Alentejo’s delights. Located near the highway exit, it used to be the stop for truck drivers on the way to Algarve – nowadays lots of families from Lisbon and other parts of the country go there just to enjoy a rich and affordable meal. It’s a spacious and natural lighted room with traditional furnishings and décor – the place setting is also typical. Friendly and helpful staff will serve you in the good and warm Alentejo’s way . I strongly recommend you to try a traditional dish – they’re well cooked and served and one portion is more than enough for two. You can choose from “Carne de Porco à Alentejana” - fried pork ... read more
