Hi there! Here I am writting for the first time...with not much to say, but with many interesting experiences to invite you to... Alentejo is the biggest part in the south of Portugal. Is all the area above Algarve and south of Lisbon (the capital), And it's one of the most riches regions in the whole country. It offers you the best dishes in portuguese food, beautiful country landscapes and an endless sea coast with the quietest sand beaches you can find. In Grandola's region, you get o stay at Grandola's Village and enjoy cheap and traditional food - full meal at a restaurant, including a special dish, with beverages, desert and coffee (and the possibility to take away the leftovers, because it's so many food that you won't be able to finish it all!) will ... read more

Monday 21st February 2010 Back on the road, this time north east to Evora. A superb drive across country through cork oak groves, vineyards and orange orchards. Tuesday 22nd February 2010 Walk into Evora where we discover a film crew making a commercial for a supermarket. The boys are fascinated by the use of a story board to script the shoot. Walk around the old town of Evora visiting the Cathedral’s chapel of bones and the famous Roman Temple of Diana. Lunch in the main square followed by a visit to the archaeological museum and the office of the local wine producers where a tasting inevitably ensues. ... read more

Conil and the Algarve We are now enjoying the sun and rest of Monte Naturista do Barao where we have stopped a couple of years ago. This is the first real sunny and windless days we have had for a long time and it is lovely. We have arrived in time to join the weekly joint meal with everyone else on the site. It is very busy this time with three other Brit couples and lots of Dutch. Since Morocco, we have spent time in Conil de la Frontera from where we managed another cycle ride. We hope to cycle from here as well. After a few nights there where we had wifi in the van we moved along the Algarve to mixed weather and some changes to the possiblilities of wild camping in one or ... read more

We got out of Porto much faster than we got in. It's amazing, you can get around really quickly when you're on the right road. We headed South on the Autovia, Portugal's version of the Autobahn. The official speed limit is 120 kilometers per hour (about 72 mph), but after observing the BMWs travelling at 160-180, I decided that 140 (approx. 84 mph) was not likely to attract the attention of the Policia. That meant we made pretty rapid progress, arriving at Sines in 4 hours. Sines is a rapidly-changing town. Probably 10 years ago it was a decaying fishing town, but now it is undergoing rapid redevelopment into a container-shipping port and beach town. Most of the historical houses have been renovated into holiday rentals. The lifelong Portuguese population is adapting to seeing visitors from ... read more

Hi there, How are you all enjoying the summer (or the winter for you guys the other side of the hemisphere)? Soon I will be back at work so I decided to update my blog before being immersed in my job tasks. What have I been up to the last 2 months? Well, I was in Portugal in July where I could enjoy the Atlantic coast of Alentejo, the region above the touristiest region of Portugal, the Algarve. The coast of Alentejo is lovely: there is no mass foreign tourism, and even for the Portuguese, the adherence is mild (except in August: where thousands of young people come to the Sudoest Pop Festival!). This is no surprise because the Alentejo region itself has low density qua inhabitants, so no highways give direct access to the coast. ... read more

Lagos We had a lovely time with Anne, Graham and Ben. We managed to show Ben the sea and waves for the first time. He seemed to enjoy himself which meant that his parents relaxed as well. It was a real highlight. The campsite was very well run and impressed us both. But we had to say goodbye on Sunday so that they could return to work. And we took off to explore the west coast of Portugal. Alentejo We always knew this coast from our stays in Feragudo as it was where we went to find some cooler air, about 10C. However, as we are going much further north we have found some gems where the Portugese go more than other northern Europeans. We liked Odeceixe with its beach on the river, Odemira, Porto Covo ... read more

Our adventures began early on our way into Portugal on June 4th. We were up early, and had a nice long, brisk walk to the bus station. Our plan was to leave Seville by a direct bus, which would cross the border at Badajoz, then continue on to Évora, our first destination in Portugal. But surprise, this wasn't to be as simple as it sounded! Apparently, there was no longer a direct bus, and we would have to take one from Seville to Badajoz, which wasn't leaving for a couple hours. This bus wound its way through the countryside for a few hours, then stopped so that half the passengers (including us) could change to another bus which then took us on to the border town. Eventually we arrived, and discovered that the next connection on ... read more

I woke up this morning to what I think was a magpie or a crow making some unearthly squawking noise outside the van, but when I looked, all I saw was the tiniest, sweetest little brown Wren bobbing about on the olive tree we have parked under. Last night we both stopped what we were doing to listen to the most unusual, haunting bird song I have heard in a long while. I unfortunately however, have a very poor knowledge of birds, especially continental ones, so could not possibly identify what it was. Goldfinches flit around the van and birdsong fills the air, the soft tinkling of goats bells add a magical feel to the site and the odd crow from the cockerel in the neighbouring small holding keeps us on our toes. So, here we ... read more

One hundred-twenty kilometres north of Sagres, after a long strip of amiable small towns and charming beaches, Porto Covo stands out for its cool streets with tidily displayed houses, all of which neatly painted white and blue. Only a short trip from Lisbon, this is a place for weekenders, for newly-married couples. Where middle-class Portuguese families take their children. We are half way through the Portuguese winter. The sun shines bright up in the clear, blue sky, however there is a subtle cool breeze, enough for the men to show off their best sweaters; ladies, their designer's wool coats. Even furcoats can be seen. Shiny shoes strolling around. Coffee being appreciated at fancy tea shops. Amongst all that, a semi-tramp is comfortable wearing his tee-shirt, shorts and trekking boots. He carries his lunch and a book ... read more
