Today we spent the whole day exploring Zamość. We began the day with the most important meal of the day, breakfast. No one spoke any english, so it was very interesting trying to order food. When we looked up on the menu, there was "omlet," so that's what we all had. When the omelet came out, there was corn in it. It was very different, but I love corn! After breakfast, we walked around the town and used an audio guide to tell us the history and important locations. The town is small, and it almost reminded me of a smaller Kraków. The buildings are painted different colors and there are many restaurants along the square. There is a volleyball tournament going on in the middle of the square, so it takes up about 1/3 of ... read more

The snow was still falling as we went through the morning routine of up, davening and breakfast. Don davened in the minyan whilst I made breakfast and prepared the packed lunches for the bus. Today we had another long and difficult day ahead. Our first stop was Majdanek. From the bus we saw this huge area surrounded by housing. The first question you ask yourself is “how did the local populous not know what was going on?” They could see thousands upon thousands of people walking five abreast with one suitcase from the railway into the camp. After all the railway did not run directly into the camp. We walked through the biting wind in the snow to the reception area. The next question you want to ask is “how on earth did people survive the ... read more

Krakow to Warsaw was just beyond the range we like to travel in one day and anyway we expected the main road north would have a lot of trucks on it which doesn’t make for leisurely driving. So when we were looking for accommodation we decided to keep our easterly course as much as possible and booked a hotel in Kazimierz Dolne (hereafter called KD) although we had no idea what was there as it is just a dot on the atlas. The weather looked like it has taken a bit of a cooler turn and we were unlikely to make it through the day without any rain. Poland doesn’t have a great reputation for bright sunny days so we will just have to make the best of what we get. The ‘whirlwind woman ‘of yesterday’s ... read more

Today was day three of death camps. On the two hour bus ride there, we watched a movie on the uprising that took place there. It was a good movie but we were not able to finish it before we got there so we learned the fate of the characters while we were in the small museum (the movie was still good when we finished it even though we already knew the ending). Sobibor was another camp that was completely destroyed. The uprising took place on October 14, 1943. The prisoners had gotten sick of the way they were being treated and killed off so they started planning their escape. They had tried doing escapes in small numbers but they found that when this happened, people left at the camp were severely punished and large numbers ... read more

This morning we left for Lublin and I couldn’t have been more excited to leave Warsaw; it was a very ugly town. It was a fun three hour bus ride where we watched a movie on the history of Poland and then went straight to Majdanek. Majdanek was the first death camp that we have been to that still has a majority of the camp still intact. One of the most disturbing things to me was that the town is literally up next to the edge of the camp and that on the other side of the camp there is a large cemetery. To me, that is really disrespectful to the memory of the victims of the holocaust, and is just something that I cannot even imagine doing as a person who knows about everything that ... read more

July 27 - I slept pretty well and the itchy has stopped! Yay Benadryl! I woke up at 7:45 and had breakfast and left around 8:30. I found the minibuses and the one to Zamosc was leaving just then, so the timing was great. It took 90 minutes so I was there by 10:15am or so. The town is cute, centered around a perfectly symmetrical square. I wandered around, went into the cathedral, climbed the belfry for some views, went to the museum, had pierogis for lunch at a milk bar, and then ran out of things to do. I am definately a big city girl, at least on vacation. The little towns are cute, but not exciting. I'm not the type who can sit around and drink coffees and watch the world go by, which ... read more

July 26 - I woke up early after a crappy night of sleep. My roommate talked to me for about an hour last night until after midnight and then I woke up itching several times in the night. Even the soles of my feet are itching. But there are no good mirrors to see what it happening. I made my way to breakfast and to think about how to spend the day. At some point I freaked out and decided I needed to leave Warsaw TODAY so I checked on the train times and there was a train leaving at 9:09am. It was already 8am, so I made a mad dash to book a hostel for the next two nights and then packed up quickly and ran away with the written directions to the hostel that ... read more

Dzień Dobry :) Hope everyone is doing well! So, as I mentioned in the last travel blog, yesterday we went to Ola's Mom's house for dinner. As we were in the car on the way over (it wasn't a long ride at all....5 minutes tops) Ola turns around and says to me "Gotowy jesteś na przesłuchanie, Mikołaju?" (Are you ready for the interrogation?) So I look all confused and I ask "Interrogation of what?" She tells me "Well, my mom is interested to get to meet you - I'm almost certain she's going to ask you a whole bunch of questions." So we arrive at her mom's house and sit down to the table. She brings out the best chicken soup I've ever had in my life (sorry Mom!) but before she gives us the soup ... read more

Hey everyone! I'm sorry for the delay in travel blog posts - I'm currently visiting with friends in Lublin (a city which is about 3 hours south-east of Warsaw by car) so my laptop doesn't have access to the internet here. So my flight over went really well aside from the fact that it was supposed to leave at 5:30pm and didn't end up taking off until around 7:45pm or something crazy like that. I finally arrived in Warsaw at about 11:45am local time. So, after getting off the plane of course I had to walk in what seemed like one of those horrible mazes that you'd find at the pumpkin patch made entirely of hay (though this one had concrete walls) to get to the passport control. At this point I figured all of the ... read more

When I was writing my couchrequest to Tomasz I was in Krakow and not entirely sober. Just before I had two shots of "good night sleep" vodka with my host. But the request was successful and in few days I was in a minibus Krakow-Lublin. Going there alone gave me time to think and conclude my journey. I had been on road already around 18 days and Lublin was my last stop before coming back to Warsaw. Even though I would not say I had the "happy happy" feeling at the time of traveling, but in conclusion this road gave me different experiences and new perspectives, so once again I can say that it was success. I went to my host. First impression of Lublin - it is quite empty - the buildings are scarce and ... read more
