We are now well settled into campervan life and being on the road. Unfortunately as we were almost up to date with our blog we have not had internet access for over 3 weeks so here goes catch-up again. So to the land of Vikings, Trolls, moose and majestic fjords. Oh and of course the summer midnight sun. We caught a ferry from Denmark into Sweden and then headed straight into southern Norway. Once again this was the cheapest option and of course it was at a silly time again, 3h30 in the morning. Norway is one of the countries that is high on our list of have-to-do’s and is our main draw to Scandinavia so if we have too many pics again, well...what can you do. Well its probably better looking at the pics that ... read more

Hey all - Our flight connection brought us to a transit in Frankfurt, Germany, and since it is not a smoking-free airport, it has a non pleasant smell to it. Plus we almost missed our connection flight to Oslo due to double security systems. Anyway. Michael and Kalle are in Norway for Kalle's good friend's wedding. Ingvild's wedding was beautiful, albeit the unpleasant weather. Tons of food and drink and story telling and dancing! Norway is far beyond what I have imagined before. Although it is in the middle of summer, the temperature is rather chilly - perhaps because it is raining for the most part during our visit. We took a hike up around the lake where Ingvild's mother lives and quite enjoyed it. Subsequent bus ride to Bergen marked the beginning of our travel ... read more

When I left off of my last travel blog, I was entering the weekend of the famous Waterford Festival known as Spraoi. Everyone has hyped me up for this awesome festival that enthralls the town for the entire weekend. Let’s just say that my expectations were a little too high. The festival didn’t kick off until Saturday mid-afternoon. There were supposed to be street performs, circus acts, and bands all over the town. Everything was free so you just walk around, enjoy a beer and watch the crowds and performers. As expected, it started raining and continued to rain all day long. Waterford didn’t really have a contingency plan so most of the acts stopped for the day. I would think after the entire summer of non stop rain they would have thought of a back ... read more

On the thrid day we bought the Oslo Pass and took a bus to Bydoy where most of the Oslo museums are. (We wanted to take a ferry there but there was a speed boat race on which blocked all activity on the harbour) Hèrve took some photos for anyone else interested. ... read more

Hi folks Now sitting in an internet cafe at Oslo Station before Heather and I wing it north to Spitsbergen tomorrow. We met safely at Bangkok Airport and had a reasonable flight overnight via Copenhagen to Oslo. The next leg was not so good -- apparently like on Virgin you need to buy food or pack a picnic on SAS domestic. As we had no Danish kroner the answer was easy, but it would have been useful to know. Tomorrow we will be ordering picnic packs from our lovely SAS Radisson Hotel, just across the road from the terminal! Haven't been to Oslo since 1971 and it comes across as a very pleasant little city -- less than half the size of Perth but probably a bit more charm. Interesting mix of old buildings and brand ... read more

Thanks to a Norwegian friend of mum's in Australia we had some advice on where to visit in Oslo; This blog entry and the next one will show some pictures of these places. This blog: mostly Vigeland Sculpture garden, in Froger Park (bus 30 from Akker Brigge) There are 192 sculptures with more than 600 figures, all modeled in full size by Gustav Vigeland (1869-1943) without the assistance of pupils or other artists. Vigeland also designed the architectural setting and the layout of the grounds. Ella tells us that the park caused quite a stir when it first opened. ...not much more to add really, photos do the job PS Thank you to everyone who wished me a happy birthday, it was a very nice surprise to see all the messages. Being in Oslo was probably Not like travelling in Norway. The West coast is absolutely beautiful and the smaller towns look gorgeous. Unfortunately we only saw a video of these places when we visited the Maritime museum. Oslo is, however a great city to explore. It is compact, pretty, it has a well laid out city plan, a lovely harbour and many inteseting places to see. Instead of detailing everything we did which would be rather dull, instead I will list all the things we noticed about Oslo so you can get a feel of it. * It's really expensive and we couldn't afford to eat out ( and keep in mind we live in London which is already a very expensive city) You can eat Norwegian food like pastries with vegetables, cheese and pesto or ... read more

Two days visiting Trondheim Norway is a very nice country with wonderful people and astonishing nature. I like Norway a lot but for various reasons I don't visit our western neighbours very often. But now in August I had both the time and the opportunity to visit Trondheim for a few days so I decided to give it a "go". Trondheim is a city with old traditions. For more than 1000 years there's been a sizeable settlement at the estuary of the Nidelva River in the Trondheimsfjord on the west coast of Norway. A long time ago Trondheim was the capital of Norway and the city has also been a popular pilgrimage site. In Trondheim I first visited Kristansten Fortress, sitting on a hill east of the city centre. The fortress was built in the end ... read more

A hot day in Hell If you have ever been in doubt I can now assure you that Hell exists. I know, I have been there! I can also inform you that it's hot in Hell. So now you know that too. Let's stop pretending why I wanted to go to Trondheim in the first place. OK, Trondheim is a nice town and well worth visiting. But the place I wanted to see most of all was a small village 30 kilometres away. A village named Hell. Because the name sounds so odd in English the village draws quite a few visitors. I've been wanting to visit Hell Village for several years and now was a good time It really was hot in Hell when I was there. That's not a joke. I was told by ... read more

Oslo had quite a large main station which seemed to be housed in a number of separate wings, one of which included a shopping mall whilst others included cafes and various eateries. There was also a direct connection to the metro which we took to the Bed and Breakfast we were staying at out in the suburbs near a forest. We bought a 24 hour public transport ticket in Oslo which entitled us to free travel on the metro, trams, ferrys and buses for a full 24 hours. It was better than Melbourne's day tickets which expire at 3am the next day. Needless to say we made use of all four public transport modes. After walking around the CBD area on the evening of our arrival we eventually chose a place to eat at which turned ... read more
