Hello, hello From backpacker to cruiser - sheer luck! The best way for us (and cheapest, interestingly enough) was to get on a cruise ship to make our way to Lofoten islands - the best place in the north to see some of the spectacular fjords that are Norway. So, we jumped on the boat, paying student deck space price and found a cosy corner to curl up and sleep. What we had never anticipated was that we had free access to everything the other cruisers had, from laundry (of which we were in desperate need!) to sauna and outdoor jacuzzi!!! Who would have thought that budget travellers could sit outside in a jacuzzi on a cruise ship taking in the passing Fjords as a local magazine interviewed us! In fact, the magazine interview is a ... read more

We began the day with a sunrise arrival in Oslo. We enjoyed room service breakfast on our balcony, and set off for a hike up the trail to Aker Fortress Gardens, for a terrific view of the harbour. The ship docked a short walk from the fortress, making this a great place to start. From here, we went in search of a 7-11 store to purchase a Dagskort Tourist Card for 60 kr for the public transport system (good for 24 hrs). The people of Oslo were very helpful in directing us in how to find one. While at 7-11, we were ahast at the price of a bottle of water. A 1 liter bottle cost $6.00 USD. We hopped on the local tram for the 10 minute ride to Frogmer Park. It is a beautiful ... read more

I normally dislike rainy and cold places. In a couple of brusiness related trips to Southern Norway that was basically all I could see of the country: constant rain and a temperature low enough to make me want to stay indoors all the time (although surprisingly mild for the latitude). However, we still wanted to go all the way to Nordkapp, the mythical Northernmost point of the continent (OK, I knew it is a tourist trap, it is not in the continent and it is not even the Northernmost point... but still we wanted to make it there and enjoy the midnight sun). Surprisingly, the weather was fine almost all the time. We spent a few days in the amazingly beautiful Lofoten and Vesteralen Islands under glorious sunshine and then drove all the way to Tromsø, ... read more

I did resort to playing cards after my last entry, as I predicted... Anyway, the title says it all really...! Yesterday in Bergen, I went to the fish market again with 2 people from the hostel (or apartment!!)- a girl from Chile and an Italian guy. And I was a little more adventurous this time, in my quest for free food...I tasted WHALE and crab!! And REINDEER sausage!!! Very nice! We bought a reindeer sausage and then went back to the "apartment" haha even though we had checked out to make lunch...(shocked face)...so we had reindeer sausage sandwiches and pasta and I had spaghetti cooked by an Italian for the 2nd time this trip...so it was a good food day... However, it was raining all day, as it does 275 days a year in Bergen, apparently! ... read more

I finally put some photos up on here...so I wasn´t lying when I said I would do it! I´ve had a few days of trains- I stayed in Narvik for 3 nights and did lots of fun stuff like watching boat races (the "Ofotfjorden Grand Prix 2007"!!!) and climbing mountains! I also went to ANOTHER museum! WHAT is going on with all these museums?! It was interesting though, Narvik was occupied by Germany in the war, because it is an important iron ore port, and the museum was about the battle and the German prisoner of war camps in the area. I got a bus and a night train down to Trondheim (the nearest train station to Narvik, apart from on the line to Sweden, is a 6 hour bus journey south!!) and spent the day ... read more

Er veldig ... read more

OK, so my plan was to get the train here, to Narvik yesterday, then get a bus down to Fauske and a night train to Trondheim. So how have I ended up further north than I was yesterday, with plans to stay for a few days?! Hmmm...well the train ride here was pretty spectacular, and I saw my first fjord right outside Narvik. There was an announcement on the train when we crossed the border, and we were in a tunnel, and when we came out the other side in Norway, the scenery had completely changed! So I got off the train here and I had absolutely no idea what to do! I bumped into a group of Irish guys and found a hostel. And the breakfast this morning made my mind up- I´m definitely staying! ... read more

Profesjonsstudiet i psykologi. Tenk deg det. På søndag letta flyet og no er eg her. Kjenslene er uhyre blanda. Glad-sur. Bli-bitter. Manisk-depresiv. ... read more
