Nukuin pitkään, johonkin klo 9 asti. Söin rauhassa aamupalaa ja pääsin liikkeelle vasta klo 11.50. Menin bussilla keskustaan. Kävelin vanhaa siltaa pitkin joen itäpuolelle ja kävin pullakahvilla. Tuli lumihiutaleita harvakseltaan.

Sain 7-11-kaupassa halvalla pullakahvit. Ostin vuorokauden lipun joukkoliikenteeseen. Ajelin ensin ratikalla mäelle ja takaisin. Monella matkustajalla oli sukset mukana. Ajoin sitten bussilla joen itäpuolelle. Rannalta löytyi vanhaan tiilitalon tehty ostoskeskus. Monella terassilla istuttiin takit päällä. Kävin bussilla vielä etelässä päin. Söin opiskelija-alueella pitsan ulkkaripaikassa. Raskin juoda lisäksi kaksi olutta, vaikka kallista on: yhden keskustassa (90 kruunua) ja toisen lähibaarissa (80 kruunua).... read more

The ship was delayed overnight by head winds and at one stage Captain said we were almost 2 hours late. However we docked at 2.30 ish and were ashore by 3.0 and walking over the bridge into town when at 3.07 I turned on Mapmywalk. We'd been given a town map so used that to go through the main part to Nidaros. Got down to river and lookout to take couple photos on way there. Stretch of old warehouses probably less than quarter mile. After seeing church went over bridge and I tried to find unusual angles. We turned left into Bakklandet. Saw only a couple of quaint views to photograph. Went down by river and as we'd only been about 90 minutes, sat in sun for a while before continuing to canal and pedestrian bridge ... read more

Trondheim Thursday 7 December 2017 The program for the day was to stop at Trondheim from 6.00am to 12 MD. We first had breakfast – you name any food and it was available, including all different sorts of fish, fresh and dried, as well as traditional Aussie food. Next was a walk into town to see the Nidaros Cathedral. We learned from Inger of the history of Trondheim. It’s another pretty town with canals and river as a vital part of life of the city. These waterways made for more spectacular views and reflections, with all the buildings covered with snow and Christmas decorations adding to the sparkle. We walked around the town, remembering the Royal Reception building which is “probably” the largest wooden building in Europe. Unfortunately, it was closed during the winter, but Tom ... read more

For my Planning My St. Olavsleden Pilgrimage blog which provides details on the history and the logistics involved, please go to . 4 - 5 July 2017 Tuesday and Wednesday. My daughter Tamara and Linda dropped me off at the Colorado Springs airport. Upon boarding the flight attendant advised due to high temperatures and altitude, the aircraft was too heavy to take off. She asked for five volunteers to take the next flight in return for a voucher. I couldn't due to tight connections, but five others immediately volunteered saving me from being dragged off the United flight. My flight left Colorado Springs at 11:25 AM and the rest of the schedule to Houston, Amsterdam, Oslo, and Trondheim went smoothly. The flight from Houston to Amsterdam was great as I had the whole row to myself. ... read more

The train to Trondheim left Oslo at 23:05. We were in seats as hadn't been able to get a sleeper when we booked. The train was busy as it was the start of the school holidays. We were thinking oh no we will have to sleep in the seats when an announcement came through there was a sleeper carriage available. Andy raced down to the cafeteria car and secured us a cabin. On the way down to them ran into one of the cousins from the reunion. He was travelling with his wife and children. Andy did not see them and went back to say hello but the carriage lights had been turned out. The sleeping carriage was very small and crowded once we put our bags in. It was lovely to lie down though. Andy ... read more

I always start a new year by planning my trips for the year, if not before. Last year, Linda granted me five weeks away to walk the Camino de Santiago across northern Spain. I knew she wouldn't agree to that long a separation again so that set one limit for any trip this year. This year we have a new more constraining limit to our ability to travel together. Our dog Bonnie was recently diagnosed with diabetes, requiring two shots daily, in the morning and evening. We didn't want to burden anyone with having to take care of her, especially as she doesn't like to be away from the comfort zone of us or our home. This requires that we take her wherever we go, which pretty much limits us to road trips around the United ... read more

The MS Spitsbergen was waiting patiently for us as we boarded among 200 plus passengers (19 Feb). We could check in at 3pm but had to wait until 6pm to get into our cabins. Fortunately we located our travelling buddies, Kim and Stuart Grierson, fairly quickly, so we had a lovely few hours chatting and meeting other passengers. This ship is beautifully finished with good quality furnishings. The cabins and common areas both are very pleasant to the eye as well as being comfortable. The absolute best part of the service on the ship is the food. The breakfast and lunch offerings on this ship are buffet style. Some who know me well will attest to the fact that I have never been a fan of the "buffet" but the food selection and quality here is ... read more

Eigentlich ... read more

It’s another good looking day with a little cloud cover which should make it OK for a walk around the sights of Trondheim. The city has a population of around 200,000 and has origins that go back to 1000AD.The Viking King Olav is buried in Nidaros Cathedral and the city has had numerous major fires in its history with almost all of the wooden buildings downtown being burnt and having to be replaced. The city was the capital of Norway until 1217 and has been fought over on many occasions. In WW2 the Germans occupied the city from the day they declared war on Norway and it was occupied right up to the day the Germans surrendered in May 1945.It was a major base for the German Navy. The German occupiers did have plans and they ... read more
