It is a pity that out house we have stayed in overnight in Kristiansund did not have its terrace with comfortable seating facing east rather than west. If it had we could have enjoyed our breakfast in warm sunshine. Instead we sat in the kitchen/dining room with the sun shining brightly through the windows making it so warm that we had to open the windows to let some air in. This has been the first occasion since we have been in Norway that the morning has started off with so much bright sunshine. For the last few nights we have had singles beds or bunks but at least they have been in the same bedroom. However last night was a bit different. We still had single beds but horrors they were in separate bedrooms! We got ... read more

What can possibly be crazier than a bunch of Serbs deciding to get to Norway by train with little money and plenty of homemade alcohol? Perhaps the fact that those same people were responsible for disrupting the order in Trondheim, a perfectly maintained and organized city. The second day after our arrival there was an announcement stating that several unknown people brought alcohol to the famous student center. According to it they could have lost the license if the ‘problem’ persisted. Considering Norwegian prices and the age of participants it was the only logical thing to do, or at least that’s what I thought back then. It was my second time there, and I decided to prepare much better than the last time. Unlike the previous time when I stayed in a student flat, this time ... read more

Geo: 63.4267, 10.3945Today I made my way back to Nidaros cathedral, having learned that the Archbishops palace was only closed on Mondays. The intel turned out to be correct because amazingly, it was open! The archbishops palace consists of three buildings. Originally it was built for the archbishop of Nidarros (surprise) but later became a military barracks and now it is a museum. In the 80's two of the buildings burned down. While excavating the grounds, medieval artifacts were found and as a result a lot more is now known about life in the palace. It was a little town within itself with all sorts of trade going on. There were blacksmiths and wood craftsman, all sorts of things. The archaeological dig found evidence that women and children lived in the palace as well....I'm sure they ... read more

Hello from the high seas! The North Sea to be exact. We are sailing from Iceland to Norway now and arriving in Trondheim tomorrow afternoon. It’s a sea day and we need a bit of a rest from the exciting things we did in Iceland. After we left the pub the other day we trudged back to the ship in the pouring rain. It was wet and miserable but not really cold. Strange place Reykjavik, they have a penis museum. Fortunately we missed this delight! So off we went about 6:30pm to find the Northern Lights. The Northern Lights, Aurora Borealis, are the same as our Southern Lights Aurora Australis, both of which are a response by the earth’s magnetic field to sunspot activity on the sun. In there is a museum for everything so it ... read more

Trondheim 17 & 18 June 2014 We arrived in Trondheim in the afternoon of the 17 June. We could see that it was a good sized city with 160,000 people. We drove into "Sentrum" to get a 'feel' for the city. We ended up at the Fort by accident so went for a walk around. As it was getting onto 7.00pm we decided to look for somewhere to park for the night. We drove out into the suburbs and found a small car park which was next to a child care centre and near the city cemetery. We thought our neighbours would not be too noisy!!! We went for a nice walk after dinner. The next morning we watched working parents drop their children off at the centre and then at 8.30am drove 10 minutes into ... read more

The Troll Ladder or Trollstein 16 June 2014 We left Alesund and traveled along the Storfjord to Sjoholt, Stordal and onto Andalsnes. The road from Stordal to Andalsnes is the Troll Road. Everyone that we had spoken to has told us that we must drive along the Troll Road. The meaning of the name Trollstigen is probably The Trolls Ladder, but in the local way of saying the name as Trollstien, it gets the meaning of The Trolls Path. It has connection with the Trolls, and as the only place in Norway you can here find the official road sign with a troll on it. At the parking area before you start going upwards you can also see the One and Only official road sign in Norway with a troll. The meaning of the sign is: ... read more

Geo: 63.4346, 10.3985On Monday our day at sea was marred by the weather. Whereas we had sailed Trollfjord in glorious sunshine, Monday dawned stormy with rain and mist to dampen our spirits. Our only foray off the ship was in Sandnessjoen, a very pretty little town which we would have loved to explore further but with my umbrella turning inside out we retreated into the shelter of the ship's lounge. The rest of the day was spent there peering through the windows at the misty rain unable to see the 7 sisters, evidently a spectacular mountain range or Torghatten, a mountain that has a hole through its middle. At least I finished my novel, updated my blog and rested.Tuesday morning started early. We docked at Trondheim at 6-30am and we had booked a city tour here. After ... read more

Geo: 63.4346, 10.3985Today we finally landed in Norway, our first stop being Trondheim. Our first impressions were slightly underwhelming. Inland, in still waters, Trondheim is Norways third largest city. It consists of beautiful colourful houses on a forested and hilly backdrop with a canal running through the centre. With no tour planned for the day, we elected to explore on foot. An ATM gave us our first dose of the Norweigan Krone. A 1,000 Krone note basically = $190AUD. We continued on, dodging swarms of straggling, stumbling elderly cruise critters, before reaching the Nidaros Cathedral. Starting as a church in 1070 and named after the original name of the city, the cathedral was finally completed to stand as it does today around 1650. We bought a multi admission pass to the cathedral, neighboring Archbishop museum and ... read more

From the E6 road, south of Oppdal, where we left the defender, we climbed steadily through thin forest with lots of fresh snow. getting used to new snowshoes in such a steep gradient is never easy.It took about an hour before the slope levelled slightly and we could see the valley ahead. The target today: the Reinheim Hut, some 16 km ahead of us, in a remote and very cold valley on the border between Dovrefjell national park and Sondalfjell. The Hut is very popular in summer, in winter you better have the key, issued to all members of the mountaineering association of norway, because you can reach the hut and find it closed...not fun! Luckily, Christian has the key. Walking on compact snow on the valley floor is soon become fun and we enjoy the sun ... read more

New Year! Slept well and woke with one hangover between us (Yvonne). Slept a bit too well as we had missed a good two hours of the ship’s stay in Trondheim. However after a quick breakfast egg or two we set off in the wintery wastes of Trondheim docks to walk into town to see what we could see. Insofar as we had any specific objectives they were to find the place Cillian worked and lived 35 years ago and to see Nidaros cathedral. We achieved both of these which was just as well as Trondheim on New Year’s Day is as closed as a closed town can be. Kjopmannsgate was Cilian’s old address and it was obligingly close to the docks so we found it easily enough. The houses that formed the site of ... read more
