I've made it to the Arctic Circle! Had an amazing journey to get here, after spending the day in Trondheim... . When I arrived in Trondheim I noticed lots of flags up and barricades set up alongside the road - "they heard I'm coming to town, this is very kind!", I thought, thinking what a welcome that was! But of course the King and Queen had also decided to turn up at the same time. Anyway, as I wandered around town today, I stumbled on the ceremony in the cathedral, commemorating 100 years since the last coronation there. Anyway, turns out I had a front row view of the royals emerging from the cathedral along the red carpet - and guess who they waved at?! (as well as the thousand or so people stood behind me!). ... read more

These were our last days in Lapland. We first visited Karajosk, which is Sami Norway's capital. Here you can find the Sami parliament, in the shape of a Sami tent. From there we drove to the beginning and end of our journey: Rovaniemi, the capital of Lapland. We visited the Santa Claus Village, where you can meet Father Christmas all year round. Rovaniemi has the most northerly McDonalds in the world, so we decided to taste some of the burgers over there ;-) The last thing we did was visiting the Arktikum. This complex contains both the Provincial museum of Lapland as the Artic Centre. From there we went to the airport.... read more

Finally we were going to see the North Cape. In contrast to what most people think, the North Cape (Nordkapp) is not the northernmost point of Europe. In fact, when you are heading to the North Cape, you have the possibility to do an 18km round trip hike to Knivskjelodden, which is situated farther north. I've heard that you can even get a kind of certificate when you succesfully complete the hike. For us, with my wife pregnant, the hike was unfortunately not an option... To reach the North Cape, you have to pay a toll. This allows you to stay there two days. It seemed to me that a lot of camping cars took advantage of this. The road was significant more crowded than the ones we passed the days before. At the North Cape ... read more

The next day we drove from Tromso -along the fjords- to Storslett and Gildetun. The day after we stopped in Alta when we were heading to Hammerfest. The rock carvings at Alta (a Unesco World Heritage site) are definitively a must-see. There you can see stone-age carvings estimated to date from 6000 to 2000 years ago. There are multiple themes to see: hunting, beers, reindeer, boats, fertility symbols,... The carvings are highlighted with red-ochre paint. At the nearby Alta museum, we saw an exhibition on Sami culture, the northern light and the military history of Finnmark. On the road to Hammerfest (and also in the city-center), we saw quite some reindeer. Hammerfest was the first city in Northern Europe with electrical streetlights. It is also known for a its undersea pipeline, transporting natural gas from the ... read more

In Harstad we drove our car on one of the Hurtigruten ships. Correction, we had to give the keys of the car to the Hurtigruten-people. They drove the car in an elevator and parked them somewhere in the ship. Apparently the purpose is to park as many cars as close as possible, hence the reason to give the keys. We had no luck with the weather. We expected to have beautiful views from the ship. Unfortunately, the clouds had a different plan... In Tromso we visited "the Artic Cathedral". The church -designed in 1964- has 11 arching triangles suggesting glacial crevasses. Inside you can watch the beautiful stained-glass window. We also visited the Polar Museum. Very informative, especially about polar research/exploration and hunting/trapping techniques.... read more

The next three days we drove through the Lofoten Islands, the soul of Northern Norway. Henningsvaer, Nusfjord and Reine were some of the villages we visited. We stayed two nights in a typical rorbu cabin near Svolvaer. A rorbu is a kind of fishing hut, with the characteristic red color. The hut is entirely made of wood, which made them smell typically. Though you wouldn't expect it, the comfort-level was quite high. The Lofoten islands is wonderfull place to see. It impressed us a lot! A perfect mixture between mountains, fishing villages,... and stockfish. Stockfish is unsalted dried fish (mostly cod). You can see the fish on wooden racks (hjell) where dries by cold air and wind. On pictures the fish looked rather small, but in reality the fish were quite large. In the past several ... read more

Route 17 can be compared to California’s Pacific Coast Highway if in scenery alone. The road itself is barely more than one car wide in places so, it’s not a road you’d want to rail on. There’s also several ferry crossings along the way to make you stop and smell the roses.... read more

Yet another ferry! They didn’t seem to run regularly. If you didn’t arrive just at the right time, you might be sitting for up to an hour. Finally, after 4 days above the Arctic Circle, the sun began to fight its way through the clouds as we approached the fjordlands again. ... read more

We picked up our rented car after arriving at the Rovaniemi airport. There we spent the first night. I remember that when I woke up in the middle of the night, I looked outside to see if it really doesn't get dark at night in the summer in Northern Scandinavia. Indeed, the sky was as clear as during the day in Belgium, very strange feeling... Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland, just south of the Artic Circle. It is also the official hometown of Santa Claus. You can even pay him a visit! After a good night sleep, we took the "artic road" to Kiruna. After driving awhile, we saw "something" at the side of the road. Unbelievable, it was the first reindeer we saw. We stopped immediately and took some pictures. What an excitement. At ... read more
