First of all, I would just like to commemorate the northern lights for being so elusive. I’ll get you you sneaky little guys. After changing all my camera settings to Northern Lights settings (not that easy!) I waited and waited but sadly – no lights. . The ship I am on is called Hurtigruten – or, hunting the light. Apparently paying for a cruise ship won’t evennnnn guarantee northern lights. What a rip off. I did, however, get to visit the lovely town of Tromsø last night around midnight. Most of the other passengers went on a “midnight concert excursion” at a local church, but we decided that was too much to pay so we just walked to the church instead. Bij de toeristische dienst van Sortland informeer ik even voor de ferry’s van vandaag en de grote tot Bodo. Ik verlaat het centrum en wat verder steek ik een ander fietsers voorbij die ik gegroet. Wat later steekt hij me terug voorbij en mompelt iets, rare kerel. De zon schijnt fel en het wordt best warm als je doortrapt. Op deze weg kan je goed cruisen, niet te vlak maar zeker niet te steil. Om 13u30 kom ik in de haven aan. Ik heb nog tijd tot 14u om te lunchen. Iemand spreekt me aan. Deze is ook verbaast dat ik helemaal van België ben gekomen. Hij keurt men fiets en zegt dat hij toch niet zo duur is als een moto. Waarop ik antwoord dat hij genoeg gekost heeft en een goede fiets is. Net ... read more

Vannacht heeft het flink geregend, gelukkig is het met de morgen droog. De hemel blijft wel donkergrijs. Als ik vertrek, kom ik iets verder een kudde schapen tegen die op het midden van de onverharde weg staan. Met wat geroep komt de massa in beweging en kan ik verder. Ik ben blij als ik op de verharde baan terecht kom. Een bareel kondigt een pas aan, het is echter een kleine maar een moeizame. Beetje klimmen en teug omlaag, zo heel de weg. Uiteindelijk kom ik net boven de 200m. Het landschap is weer anders. Nog wel wat bergen maar bekleed met groen. Hier en daar nog een wit hoedje. Als ik een pauze pak, passeren er nog 2 fietsers. 2 Zwitsers die nog maar 3 dagen onderweg zijn. Vlak erna passeren er nog 2 meisjes ... read more

A shorter entry today, but that's how it works when I find FREE INTERNET two days in a row. =) So I was feeling lazy this morning, but that was ok. There's a large viking reconstruction area / museum on my way through the islands, so I decided to check it out. Some farmer found pottery shards in his fields a number of years ago, and the archaeologists moved in and discovered the remains of the world's largest known viking longhouse, over 80 metres in length. You can see the original location of this and other buildings, as well as the reconstructed versions of a few of them. I just want to add a comment about photos, since I will hopefully be able to upload more frequently now. If anyone wants to see any specific photos from the past month that I've mentioned but haven't posted, let me know and I'll see what I can do! Just post a comment and I'll get around to it when I can. I'll try to do a real update tomorrow or in a couple days. Fewer services here in the Lofoten Islands, just small villages for a couple days.
